CWIT Peer Mentor Application Deadline Extended
Good afternoon CWIT family,
We are currently recruiting through the summer for mentors for the 2023-2024 school year! Mentors can be students who have already participated in the program as mentors, previous mentees who are ready for a leadership role, or other members of CWIT. The responsibilities & expectations of being a mentor are here:
Responsibilities and Expectations
- Commit to being a peer mentor for one full academic year.
- Serve as a mentor to new students by demonstrating a personal interest in their adjustment to UMBC and CWIT while recognizing and accepting the new student's individuality.
- Assist mentees in setting and meeting personal and academic goals.
- Become familiar with your mentees' personal and academic interests as well as future educational and career goals.
- Maintain a friendly, but professional demeanor and relationship with mentees.
- Serve as a leader and a role model for all students by complying with UMBC's conduct and community standards
- Maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA
The compensation for being a CWIT Peer Mentor is different this year from what previous mentors may know; this school year we are offering $150 Retriever Dollars!

Private bedroom available in a two bedroom apt near campus
Looking for a female roommate
I'm looking for a respectful and responsible female roommate to renew the lease for my current apartment. It's a two-bedroom apartment located in downtown Arbutus. The apartment is next to two shuttle stops and is less than 5 minutes to campus by car. Lease is for a year and begins in September but an earlier move-in for August is possible. Rent is $800/month and includes all utilities and internet. The apartment is spacious, comes with a lot of storage space, and the bedroom is huge. The unit comes with all appliances, central air/heating, dishwasher, washer and dryer, as well as reserved parking.
The apartment is in a residential neighborhood and next to a pharmacy, multiple restaurants, grocery store, movie theater, gas stations, etc. It's a quiet community, and the surrounding area is walkable. I'm a rising third-year doctoral student and have a hectic schedule. It's important for me to have a comfortable and relaxing space and I enjoy keeping the place nice and clean. I'm looking for a considerate, clean, and respectful roommate.

ALERT! Concerning Job Scams
Holidays and long weekends attempt to catch users off guard
Over the weekend the Division of Information Technology has gotten reports of several job scams sent to users by email. These scams promise good pay for minimal effort, usually at home on your own schedule. The scams will ask for your information, including:
name and full address
cell phone number and personal email address
in some cases your resume
banking or credit card information
passport information and/or social security number (SSN)
This information can be used to impersonate you by opening credit in your name, or simply to drain the finances from your current accounts. Users have also reported fake invoices from well known companies, as well as check or money order scams; both meant to trick people to send money directly to the scammers.
If you have received any suspicious emails asking for your personal information, even from someone appearing to be affiliated with UMBC, do not respond. Send the message to security@umbc.edu. We will help to verify the legitimacy of these messages.

Join us for a UMBC Magazine “Pitch Party”
Bring all your best community story ideas!
Our editorial staff are beginning to plan out the Fall 2023 issue of UMBC Magazine, and as always, we love to hear ideas from all over campus. To that end, we will have two virtual pitch party opportunities, on June 28 from 2 – 3 p.m. and on July 6 from 11 a.m. – noon. We would love to see you there!
What’s a “pitch party,” you ask? Well, it’s an informal drop-in gathering where you can pitch any and all story ideas.
What kinds of stories are we looking for? As always, we’re looking for ways of telling the UMBC story on a broad scale, to highlight the good work and experiences of students, alumni, staff, and faculty alike. We’re looking for stories that will help anyone who picks up the magazine understand who we are as a community — and why they should join us! That could mean sharing info about cool alumni who are doing interesting work, campus initiatives that excite you, great examples of faculty-student mentorship, and other ways that Retrievers are rising to the top. Hearing from all of you is vital to creating the most well-rounded (and just overall interesting) version of the magazine.

Arena to be Site of Jehovah's Witnesses' Convention
Parking By Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena Affected
The Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena will host the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ Annual Convention on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays this summer. The conventions will begin this Friday and run through the weekend of August 4-6.
Parking in the lots by the arena will be greatly reduced. As a result, you may have to park in a different lot or, if an option, elect to work from home those Fridays. The campus is lightly attended on Fridays and parking will be available for anyone who needs it.

Student Conduct and Community Standards is offering Restorative Practices Training
! This two-day training will take place on Wednesday, July 12 and Thursday, July 13 from 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM in the Apartment Community Center. Breakfast, lunch and snacks will be provided. The training is free for UMBC affiliates, but purchasing guidelines require us to charge $75 to cover the per-person costs for meals and training materials for non-UMBC folks. We understand that two full days is a lot to ask; however, we are confident that this training will be a catalyst that will enable relationships of all types to flourish and assist us in operationalizing the Community Living Principles and other aspirational goals in and beyond the Division of Student Affairs.

- Spend two days digging into role plays, simulations, activities, and theory focused on supporting our community members not only academically, but also psychologically and emotionally. During the sessions you will gain facilitation, community building, and conflict management techniques you can implement immediately.
Topics:
- Community Circles: Participants will actively engage in a community circle and delve into social-emotional community building approaches.
- Restorative facilitation techniques: Experience a session integrating restorative techniques into your facilitation skills and practices. Expand your own practice and share with others.
- Standards-Setting Role Play: Observe and participate in role plays to create community standards. These have been used in many contexts including organization vision, mission and goal-setting, classroom management, and conflict resolution.
- Connecting with your community members: Learn a few lessons you can implement in your classroom or organization to create a positive environment where all members are included and accountable.
Workshop Overview:
Day One: Developing a Restorative Worldview
This workshop will challenge you to think differently about how you build relationships, build community with groups, and respond to conflict or incidents of harm. We will wrestle with the notions of discipline, conflict and justice through lecture, discussion, activities and role plays-looking closely at what our current systems are accomplishing and if the real needs of victims, offenders and communities are being met. Ultimately, we will emerge from day one of the workshop with ideas of how we can use restorative practices as a way of thinking about how we exist in community with others.
Day Two: Using Restorative Tools
This workshop focuses on practical skills to set up and host a circle, how to use different types of circles and concrete tools and techniques to support engagement from participants in the circle process. The workshop uses adult education and experiential learning techniques, as well as activities and discussion. Circles can be used for:
- Establishing agreements on how community members will interact and engage with each other;
- Creating a sense of shared responsibility for maintaining agreements inside and outside of the classroom;
- Offering a way to address issues and have an open and honest discussion of these issues;
- Providing a way to address and deal with conflict.
