Going up for P&T? Want help, or to help your colleagues?

<Tagline>Please help us help each other with P&T!</Tagline>

Congratulations on finishing up another school year! Wherever you find yourself right now, just getting here is an accomplishment in its own right.

We want to continue to support our colleagues in their efforts to sustainably balance life priorities with work responsibilities and to pursue meaningful intellectual and professional goals.

In keeping with our mission to support CAHSS women faculty at key junctures in their careers, we will again offer assistance to colleagues going up for promotion or tenure this year: an online library of past self-assessments and mentorship on writing the self-assessment.

If you have successfully passed review for contract renewal, senior lecturer, tenure, principal lecturer, or full professor, you can help and we’d love to have you. So:

1) If you'd be willing to share the self-assessment you submitted for any of these reviews, please email it to Kate (drabinsk@umbc.edu) or Michelle (mscott@umbc.edu) at your earliest convenience. We’ll add it to our online library. Note: we especially need self-assessments from senior lecturers and principal lecturers.

2) If you'd be willing to read and comment on drafts of others' self-assessments over the summer, please let Kate (drabinsk@umbc.edu) or Michelle (mscott@umbc.edu) know by June 16 and we'll add you to the list.

Not goodbye but see you later—Welcoming the Class of 2023 to our alumni community

UMBC’s class of 2023 took the mantra “strength in numbers” to heart as nearly 2,000 graduates crossed the stage during this year’s spring Commencement ceremonies. We can’t confirm it but for those in attendance, it felt like the applause and cheers may have registered on the Richter scale. Each ceremony was unique, just like our graduates, but there were several common themes among the speakers, including the reminder that the journey is just beginning for these Retrievers.

When in doubt, turn to Rocky

Valedictorian for the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; School of Social Work; and Erickson School of Aging Studies morning ceremony, Zinedine Partipilo Cornielles ’23, financial economics and mathematics, shared that inspiration can come from the most unlikely sources…including Rocky Balboa, the fictional boxing legend. Cornielles recently rewatched the series with his roommates and reflected on the struggles Rocky faced.

Valedictorian for the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; School of Social Work; and Erickson School of Aging Studies morning ceremony, Zinedine Partipilo Cornielles ’23, speaks at Commencement.

“Life is not always about winning. It’s about overcoming adversity and challenges as we all have throughout our lives and throughout this journey,” said Cornielles, addressing his classmates. “It’s about standing up again after falling down, and I know that each and everyone of us has been able to get back on our feet—regardless of the number of times we’ve fallen before—because you are here.”

During the afternoon ceremony for the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences; College of Engineering and Information Technology; and Division of Undergraduate Academic Affairs, valedictorian Christopher Slaughter ’23, computer engineering, revealed his inspiration comes from UMBC itself.

Valedictorian of the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences; College of Engineering and Information Technology; and Division of Undergraduate Academic Affairs Christopher Slaughter ’23 shares a moment with a mentor.

“Although our journey began here at UMBC where we were unaware of our futures, we quickly learned the magic of this place…a place where we do not defer our dreams, but where we seed them, tend them, and watch them grow,” said the Meyerhoff Scholar.

Clark as Co-I on newly funded NASA CMS Grant

    J. Blake Clark (616/UMBC) is a Co-I on a NASA Carbon Monitoring Systems proposal that was recently selected for funding. The grant, titled "Integrating Lateral Carbon Fluxes into Carbon Monitoring System (CMS) Ocean Carbon Estimates," will be led by PI Cecile Rousseaux (GSFC/616). In addition to Dr. Clark, other Co-Investigators include Louise Chini (UMD), George Hurtt (UMD), and Stephanie Schollaert Uz (NASA GSFC). Work is expected to begin in Summer 2023.

Dr. Clark provided the following summary:

"Climate, weather, and land characteristics directly affect the concentration and composition of organic and inorganic matter, including carbon, delivered to the rivers and ultimately to the oceans. Although the uptake of carbon dioxide by phytoplankton at the surface of the ocean and its recycling into dissolved organic carbon and nutrients are routinely represented in models, the lateral transfer of carbon from land to oceans is severely underrepresented or completely missing from current models. This is sorely needed for carbon accounting and particularly critical in the global assessment and estimates of carbon stocks. In this project we improve existing CMS products by adding this transfer and transformation of organic and inorganic matter as well as quantifying the effects of land use and changes on the resulting global ocean carbon flux. An existing terrestrial biosphere model (Ecosystem Demography model, ED) combined with the Land-Use Harmonization (LUH) dataset provide fluxes of carbon and nutrients from land to rivers under varying land use and land cover change scenarios. The River-Estuary model transports and transforms aqueous forms of carbon and nutrients to represent the lateral fluxes of carbon and nutrients from rivers to the NASA Ocean Biogeochemical Model (NOBM) currently used to produce the CMS global carbon fluxes. This project will add critical components and processes to the current CMS-flux products by adding the effects of land use and change on the transfer of carbon to rivers, the transport and transformation of organic and inorganic matter in rivers and the effects these processes have on the global ocean carbon budget. The modeling tools and output developed by this project will directly feed into the global carbon budget and be adopted by stakeholders in the ocean carbon sector, among others, who will provide feedback that will be used to co-develop monitoring tools and mitigation solutions."
