Max Bobbin

Degree: B.S., Chemical Engineering; B.A., Philosophy
Hometown: Joppa, MD
Post-grad plans: Ph.D. in chemical engineering, University of Delaware

Max Bobbin may still be an undergraduate, but he’s already made significant research contributions in the Artificial Intelligence and Theory-Oriented Molecular Science (ATOMS) lab, led byTyler Josephson, assistant professor of chemical, biochemical, and environmental engineering. Bobbin was the first in the research group to develop expertise in the programming language Lean. He took on a leadership role, teaching other lab members, including Josephson, about new ways to use Lean. He also selected appropriate projects for new team members, helped the group prepare for Josephson’s parental leave, and initiated new directions for the lab’s work.

Bobbin believes his additional philosophy major supported his engineering work in important ways. “For an engineer, the most important skills are problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication,” he says, “and philosophy is a major built around those three ideas.”

Bobbin also served as vice president of the UMBC American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) student chapter and led UMBC to the AIChE Jeopardy national championship in 2022.

A student leader gives UMBC’s new president her first campus tour

Sianna Serio

Degrees: B.S., Computer Science
Hometown: Bel Air, MD
Post-grad plans: Fulbright Scholarship to teach English in Slovakia

One of Sianna Serio’s most memorable UMBC experiences was giving a campus tour to UMBC President Valerie Sheares Ashby during her first day as the university’s new leader. Serio was ideally suited for the job, having worked for Residential Life as a resident assistant and for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and Orientation as team lead for UMBC’s orientation peer ambassadors and as team lead for the Grit Guides, training and managing the rest of the campus tour guide team.

Prior to Serio’s first full semester at UMBC, she traveled to the University of Bristol to participate in the first Dawg Days: Abroad program, studying comparative politics. So, it was there in Bristol, England, that she first connected with the UMBC community. Since then, she has been involved in many UMBC student organizations, including the Society of Women Engineers, Sign of Life, First Generation Network and the UMBC Crafters club.

The Center for Women in Technology (CWIT) has been the academic focal point for Serio during her time at UMBC. She has been a CWIT Affiliate from the start, applied to live on the CWIT Living Learning Community floor for her first academic year, and volunteered for several events for prospective students. Last academic year, she served as a CWIT Peer Mentor for three incoming first-year students majoring in computer science. With her experience and enjoyment as a mentor, she became the CWIT Peer Mentoring Program student lead for 2022–2023 and has hosted several successful events for the 94 members of the program.

Has there been a mentor or fellow student who influenced your time at UMBC?

“Naomi Corns was a student a year above me who strongly influenced my first two years at UMBC. We originally met through a sociology class. While we weren’t the same major, we had a lot in common in personality and drive. After getting to know each other both inside and outside the classroom, she was one of the people to recommend me to be a resident assistant and she inspired me to become an active member of the UMBC community. She had also been an orientation peer ambassador while at UMBC, which I pursued as well. If it wasn’t for her leading by example and showing her support, I don’t think I would have been where I am today as a part of UMBC or as a student.”

What has been the best part of your UMBC experience?

“Everyone gets to choose how they want to show up everyday and the mark they want to make, and UMBC students are given so many opportunities to do so. When I came to UMBC, I had no intention of getting involved and putting myself out there. But after seeing so many opportunities laid out in front of me after just a few weeks on UMBC’s campus, it was almost impossible for me to avoid. I was constantly encouraged by the people around and me and I have grown in every aspect of my life.”

GESTAR II Seminar Series, May 11 at 11:00am

Join us for a virtual seminar by Dr. Efi Foufoula-Georgiou, professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth System Science, University of California Irvine (UCI). Her talk is titled "Preserving space-time patterns and extremes in satellite precipitation retrievals: from spectral error analysis and diagnostics to Machine Learning."

Date and Time: Thursday, May 11, 2023 at 11:00am

Join us via Teams.

Abstract:

"In this talk, I will provide a synthesis of our research in understanding and quantifying systematic and random errors in precipitation retrievals from multi-satellite platforms towards improving the accuracy and resolution of global precipitation products. I will first describe our efforts on multi-scale space-time decomposition of state-of the-art satellite precipitation estimates (QPEs) to diagnose the nature of the error and build a spectral error model that accounts for the space-time dynamics of precipitation. Diagnosing and quantifying the systematic error (intensity, wavenumber and frequency dependent) and the random error (additive or multiplicative) allows to characterize uncertainty at any time and location and across a range of scales. For hydrologic applications, getting the timing of storms right is also important and our event-based error decomposition allows to detect and diagnose systematic biases in the start, peak and end time of storms as well as event intensity. We apply the knowledge gained from our spectral decomposition analysis into constructing appropriate loss functions for training the new class of Machine Learning (ML) retrieval algorithms and show significant improvements in preserving extremes and the space-time structure of precipitation across multiple scales."

Biography:

Dr. Efi Foufoula-Georgiou is a Distinguished Professor and the Samueli Endowed Chair in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and in Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine. From 1989-2016 she was a McKnight Distinguished Professor in Civil Engineering at the University of Minnesota, Director of the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory, and Director of the National Center for Earth-surface Dynamics (NCED). Dr. Foufoula-Georgiou studies hydrology and geomorphology with an emphasis on understanding the space-time organization and multiscale structure of precipitation and landforms for improving modeling and prediction. She has served the community in several capacities, including member of the NAS Water Science and Technology Board, NSF Advisory Council for Geosciences, NASA Earth Sciences Subcommittee, and Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board. Her elected positions include Chair of the Board of Directors of CUAHSI, Trustee of UCAR, President of the Hydrology Section of AGU, and AMS Councilor.
Good morning and happy Monday everyone! Today we are going to discuss intelligence!

An outline for todays presentation:

{Firstly, we will look at what Intelligence is, and how AI sheds light on what we humans call intelligence.

We will explore whether intelligence is something static, and whether it is just one trait, or many we arbitrarily group together. (I will argue the second).

I feel looking at AI helps clarify things a lot that are often murky to talk about.

Finally we will discuss the Chinese room problem, questioning whether consciousness is something separate from intelligence, or just one type of many intelligences we have.}

The central question is: What is Intelligence, and does AI have intelligence?

All will take place today; in PAHB 229 from 4-5 pm.

Intern of the Week: Suhetu Ring

<Tagline>Check out Suhetu's internship with CloudLeap Technologies</Tagline>

Name: Suhetu Ring

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site: CloudLeap Technologies

Position Title: Data Science Intern

Major or Program: MPS Data Science

Current Class Level: Master’s Student

Work Term: Spring 2023

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

CloudLeap Technologies being a small scale Big Data company, my internship responsibilities vary and I'm expected to wear many hats. I am required to code solutions using multiple technologies such as Python, Apache Spark and leverage Machine Learning principles. One of the most interesting works I've been involved in here was the 'VETAssist' project which was developed and presented by me at the 'TOP Summit 2023' hosted by the US Census Bureau during Feb 22-24 this year. It was an amazing experience during which I learnt a lot. I was constantly involved in communicating with product advocates, user base in Puerto Rico and government advisors who guided our company to developing a 'Minimum Viable Product' for the Summit. It really put our company out there and was a head turner. Currently I'm handling the responsibility of handling multiple Government Project Opportunity Vehicles such as GSA EBuy, SAM.gov for our company to find project opportunities.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I had applied through UMBCworks last summer during June 2022 for a Summer Internship, which has been extending till date until May 2023. I'm grateful for that. After that, I was called for an in-person interview which tested my Apache Spark knowledge and my past experience in the Data Science field.

Which of the following resources did you use to find your current experience?

UMBCworks

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

Handling multiple roles and taking up work in fields I've never really explored is what I feel I've enjoyed the most. I've enjoyed utilizing my hard skills as well as developing tons of soft skills like communication, presentation, planning which according to my manager is really useful in the professional sector.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I believe I've made noticable project advancements for CloudLeap in the Big Data field. Because of the work I've been doing here, we gathered audience, made connections and are on the process of establishing ourselves in the Big Data Sector, of course with the help and guidance of our whole team at CloudLeap.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

I would recommend feeling confident in whatever role or position you're applying to. As students we need to have self confidence in our knowledge and ourselves generally.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

The Career Center really gives us the platform to develop ourselves professionally. They do this by holding workshops, recommending opportunities and inviting companies over for talks. All of this really guides us and makes us understand how we need to obtain the skills needed for professional progression.

Research with impact rekindles an international student’s love of academia

Supportive faculty and staff mentors helped Hala Algrain find her way on what she describes as a long journey to a career that fits her values.

While pursuing a master’s degree in health information technology, Algrain honed her interests and reconnected with a love of research and teaching. She currently works as a research assistant in the Health Data Lab of Ian Stockwell, associate professor of information systems. She felt an immediate connection to the work, which aligns with her goal of creating intelligent human-centered health systems that address patient needs. Her experience in the lab prompted her to change career plans. Instead of entering industry, she will pursue a Ph.D. in information systems at UMBC.

Algrain also accessed professional development services and found faculty who guided her to classes that fit her interests and opened new opportunities. “Shout out to the Office of International Students and Scholars,” she says. “They really do have your back.”

What activity, experience, or co-curricular at UMBC was particularly important to you?

“I’ve valued working as a teaching assistant and a research assistant. Connecting with students as a teaching assistant rekindled my love for academia. I enjoyed being able to facilitate another student’s learning experience.”

Is there a particular academic achievement you’re most proud of?

“I’m proud of persevering through a lot of professional dead ends and continuously seeking a higher standard for the level of impact of health systems. It’s incredibly reassuring and exciting to find mentors at UMBC who have the same values of conducting research with real-world impact.”
