comes first. Additionally, we are encouraging residents to consider

While students are not required to vacate early, if this is something you would
like to consider please make sure you are following the instructions below.

Check-Out Procedures

You may schedule a
check-out time with your RA or complete an express checkout in order to avoid a
$50 improper check-out charge. These are your two options:

Express Check-Out | This is the fastest and easiest way to check out of
    a room.

Residents should bring
their UMBC ID card to their community desk to be deactivated after all of their
personal items are removed from their room.

They will be asked to
    complete an electronic Checkout Receipt.

Residential Life will
inspect their room at a later time for potential damages and/or cleaning
    charges.

Traditional
    Check-Out | This option is
for residents who would prefer to be present while a RA completes the checkout
inspection and/or who know they have caused damage to their room. RAs
conducting checkouts will inform residents of potential cleaning or damage
    charges at the appointment.

Students should
schedule an appointment with a staff member at least 48 hours before departing.

The student should
ensure all items are removed from their room and they a present at the time of
    their scheduled inspection.

After their room is
inspected, residents should bring their UMBC ID card to their community desk to

Set the thermostat
    between 70-72 (A/C) degrees.

conducting, or composing on the regional and national level, with many having a
research focus in contemporary art-music and some with creative activities that
include music as a vehicle for civic engagement and social justice. In addition
to its undergraduate degrees, the Department offers a post-baccalaureate Certificate

UMBC recognized for increasing democratic engagement

<Tagline>Musa Jafri '24 named to Student Voting Honor Roll</Tagline>

UMBC has been recognized for its role in increasing nonpartisan democratic engagement, graduating engaged voters, and building a strong nonpartisan student voter engagement plan. The Center for Democracy and Civic Lifecoordinates and collaborates with many campus departments and organizations on voter engagement efforts.

First, UMBC was named a Voter Friendly Campus, one of 258 campuses in 38 states and the District of Columbia, by Fair Elections Center's Campus Vote Project and NASPA - Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education. The initiative recognizes institutions that have planned and implemented practices that encourage their students to register and vote in the 2022 elections and in coming years. The University earned the same designation for the previous two-year period.

The mission of the 2023 Voter Friendly Campus designation is to bolster colleges' and universities' efforts to help students overcome barriers to participating in the political process -- every year, not just during years featuring federal elections.

In addition, based on the quality of its 2022student voter engagement plan prepared by the Center for Democracy and Civic Life, UMBC was awarded the 2022 ALL IN Highly Established Action Plan Seal. UMBC is one of 121 colleges and universities recognized for their commitment and plans to increase nonpartisan democratic engagement in 2022 and graduating engaged voters.

ALL IN and the American Democracy Project, Campus Vote Project, NASPA Lead Initiative, and the Students Learn Students Vote Coalition created the Strengthening American Democracy Guide to help guide campuses on their journey to graduate democratically engaged students by building effective action plans. ALL IN, in collaboration with over 960 higher education institutions, seeks to make participation in local, state, and federal elections a social norm; substantially increase the number of college students who are democratically engaged on an ongoing basis, during and between elections, and not just at the polls; and make educating for democratic engagement on college campuses an accepted and expected part of the culture and curriculum so that students graduate with the knowledge, skills, behaviors, and values needed to be an informed and active citizen.

Alongside staff and faculty, UMBC students play an important role in helping to create resources as well as develop and facilitate nonpartisan programs that encourage students to become democratically engaged. Undergraduate Musa Jafri '24 was named to the 2023 ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge Student Voting Honor Roll for his work supporting student voter engagement. Jafri is UMBC's SGA President-elect. He has played a leading role in UMBC's voter engagement efforts as SGA's director of governmental affairs and as a political engagement intern for the Center for Democracy and Civic Life (which nominated him for this recognition).

Since the 1960s, 22 of the 54 African countries have witnessed civil wars that resulted in mass violence, displacement and refugee crises, economic and infrastructural destruction, and political and regional instability. Caused by complex historical drivers and experiences rooted in the colonial legacy of fragile constitutional and institutional structures, ill-prepared political leadership, sectarianism, ethnonationalism, religious intolerance, poverty and inequality, and stiff competition for scarce resources, among other factors, the wars have had devastating impacts on Africans especially women. Leading experts, activists, students, policymakers, and others will discuss these issues, including women, gender, conflict resolutions, and peacebuilding/peacemaking in Africa.

Join keynote speakers Aili Mari Tripp, Ph.D., Vilas Professor of Political Science at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and Cyril Obi, Ph.D., Program Director at the Social Science Research Council, NYC and leader of the African Peacebuilding Network (APN) and the Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa programs along with a special panel of UMBC students for two days of discussion, African food, and music.

RSVPs/Registration is required no later than April 30, 2023 to reserve a seat.
The presenter will overview the situation of English-language teaching in Japan -- defined here as teaching the language itself, i.e., TESOL; as well as English-medium education more broadly. The talk is mainly based on the presenter's experience from his early days at an English-language school in the late 1970s, through several university positions with increasing responsibilities and status, up until his recent retirement. While Japan was once a relatively open job market for English speakers desiring to get a foot in the teaching profession, it has tightened considerably over the years, particularly in the higher education sector. With this in mind, opportunities in other Asian countries where the ELT market has developed more recently will also be examined based on secondary sources.
