How (Not) to Win the URCAD Selfie Contest

<Tagline>Pro Tips on the Art of the Selfie from UMBC Faculty & Staff</Tagline>

Ms. C. Cowden (Library Area) provided us with a fine example of how not to win the URCAD Selfie Contest on April 12, 2023.

"While there is technically nothing wrong with Ms. Cowden's selfie, she is masked and seems to have ears and antlers that she does not have in real life," said a well-known selfie critic who refused to be identified.

"I thought it was a good effort," noted Cowden, a longtime UMBC employee and music enthusiast, who submitted her selfie by telefax early this morning. "I'm not sure why I have those fake ears and antlers but people do that, right? They add animal parts? I think it's legal, right?"

Nevertheless, this is a salient example of how not to take a selfie.

Ms. Cowden still has time, however, to submit a second attempt and she could still win one of several fabulous prizes. Here's how:

Join Us in Our Selfie Contest!

To compete, tag your photos, #umbcURCAD

URCAD Sneak Peek: Theo Reinert

The Language of Toys: Transmission and Circulation of Gender Ideologies

Theo Reinert
Mentor: Jason Loviglio, Media and Communication Studies

This research explores what makes a toy gendered, how it is gendered, and what it means for a material object to carry ideology. Toys are given to children to entertain and educate them on things such as gender roles. For a long time, separate toys were marketed and sold to girls and boys, until large chains such as Target and Walmart, two of the largest toy distributors in the country, removed gendered signage from their toy aisles. Despite these changes, many toys continue to reinforce the gender binary through their designs and marketing. 20 toys purchased from Walmart were analyzed through Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis (MCDA) and ideological analysis to see what gender ideologies they carry and how they are instantiated. Gender ideologies code toys to emphasize certain values, such as mobility for boys and socializing for girls. For example, toys that move, such as a fire engine, are more likely to be marketed towards boys. It is Walmart’s careful marketing that contributes which toys are sold and therefore which ideologies are circulated, affecting the lived experiences of the people who play with them.

Maryland Arbor Day & UMBC's Canopy

<Tagline>A new tool for tree health on campus</Tagline>

Maryland's Arbor Day: A Closer Look at

UMBC's Urban Canopy and Remote Sensing of Trees

Maryland Arbor Day is a special day for all of us who care about the environment. It's a day to celebrate and appreciate the importance of trees in our communities, and to raise awareness of the need to protect and preserve our natural surroundings. At UMBC, one of the ways we do this is by paying close attention to our urban canopy.

What is an urban canopy, you ask? It's the layer of leaves, branches, and stems that covers the tops of trees in a city or suburban area. The urban canopy plays a vital role in our environment by absorbing carbon dioxide, providing shade, and improving air and water quality. It's also a critical habitat for birds, insects, and other wildlife.

At UMBC, we're lucky to have a thriving urban canopy that covers much of our campus. But, as with any natural resource, it's important to monitor and assess the health of our trees to ensure they continue to provide the benefits we depend on. That's where remote sensing technology comes into play.

Remote sensing involves using instruments like satellites and drones to collect data about the environment from a distance. In the case of trees, remote sensing can be used to assess their health, growth, and even the amount of carbon they absorb. This technology is particularly useful in urban areas, where it can be difficult to access every tree for manual inspections.

At UMBC, researchers are using remote sensing to better understand the health of urban canopies across the globe. They're using satellite imagery to analyze the size and density of our trees, as well as the amount of carbon they store. This information can help us make informed decisions about tree maintenance and planting, and can even inform urban planning decisions.

UMBC's Office of Sustainability and Facilities Management have collaborated to create a program to better understand the health of our trees on campus. This long-term monitoring project is set to kick off a significant data update next school year thanks to the support of the Division of Administration & Finance and a UMBC undergraduate University Business Intern. Over the next year we will update the NEW UMBC urban canopy explorer to better quantify and assess the trees on our campus.

On Maryland Arbor Day, let's take a moment to appreciate the beauty and benefits of UMBC's urban canopy, and to reflect on the importance of protecting and preserving our natural surroundings. By using innovative technologies like remote sensing, we can ensure that our trees continue to thrive for generations to come
