MdPHA Student Members

The Student Section of the Maryland Public Health Association (SMdPHA) is an organization open to ALL students from ALL universities and colleges! SMdPHA serves communities throughout the state, educates others about public health topics and promotes the field to students, and advocates for public health equity. By being a SMdPHA member, you will have opportunities to learn more about public health in practice and participate in networking opportunities with professionals at events throughout the year.

SMdPHA currently has three student chapters at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy ( facebook.com/SMDPHA ), University of Maryland School of Medicine Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, and Towson University. These chapters work independently and with the guidance of the MdPHA Board of Directors to create events and activities to engage and enhance the student experience.

About the Presenter:

Joshua Le (He/Him/His) is a Junior Public Health major on the Health Administration track at UMBC. Outside of UMBC, he enjoys playing video games with friends, listening to music, and sometimes writing poetry. Joshua believes that no leaders are born, but made; leadership plays an important role in Joshua’s identity. His goals as a Leadership Peer Facilitator is to guide others to find self-authorship and understand their values. Aside from being a Leadership Peer Facilitator, Joshua takes part in the Student Government Association  as a Senator, and is a Grit Guide within the Undergraduate Admissions Office.

Ice-Breaker: Favorite animal?

My favorite animal has to be the elephant or the snake… or the dragon… but most definitely the elephant. I love elephants because they represent wisdom, and it was also my great-grandmother’s favorite animal as well :D! 


The Leadershops series consists of 1 hour workshops that focus on various student centered leadership-related topics facilitated by Campus Life staff and Leadership Peer Facilitators. This program aims to contribute to the leadership development and ongoing learning of UMBC undergraduate students.

Applications to join Congressman Jamie Raskin's Democracy Summer program are now open! You can click here to apply by April 14th. 

The Democracy Summer project seeks to bring about political change in America by training and deploying the next generation of Democratic organizers and leaders to win elections at every level. This one-of-a-kind Democratic Fellowship-founded by Congressman Jamie Raskin but now undertaken across the country-teaches high school and college students state-of-the-art tactics in voter registration and political organizing, the dynamic history of political and social change in our country, and essential lessons for political leadership. 

This six-week program will take place from Monday, June 26, 2023 - Monday, August 7, 2023. Fellows will commit to participating in approximately 4 hours a week of virtual seminars, discussions and workshops, and an additional 10-12 hours a week of in-person organizing with Jamie Raskin for Congress.

April 3-7th is National Public Health Week (NPHW). UMBC students and faculty have put together a great program of daily events. To learn more, please join the UMBC GROUP “NPHW.” You can also follow us on Instagram @umbcpublichealth We need volunteers. The Women’s Center is looking for volunteers to help with the Clothesline project (contact the Women’s Center), Retriever Essentials might appreciate volunteers on Friday for their event (contact Retriever Essentials), and students in Health Justice and Advocacy could use additional volunteers to staff the mental health expression board on Thursday between 11:15-2:00 pm. Contact Prof. K (akalfogl@umbc.edu). Finally, help us spread the word. Students are going to chalk about the events on the sidewalks (not walls!) throughout the campus. If you want to help chalk, you can pick up a piece outside Prof. K’s office: Public Policy 222. Let’s celebrate National Public Health Week! #UMBCNPHW

We are recruiting a qualified Research Analyst to support research and technical assistance activities at Metrics for Management. Metrics for Management’s mission is to create evidence-based and standardized performance measures to improve health services in low- and middle-income countries. We work to assure accurate and relevant data is collected, that common metrics are agreed on to measure performance, and that those metrics are widely disseminated and used.

The Research Analyst will advance critical metric development, testing, and support initiatives that seek to improve the measurement, understanding, and delivery of health services. The successful candidate will have opportunities to publish articles and reports, attend and present at domestic and international conferences, and use and learn a variety of quantitative and qualitative research and analysis techniques.

The qualified candidate will have a Bachelor's Degree with +4 years of relevant experience or a Master's Degree with + 2 years of relevant experience in public health, epidemiology, demography, statistics, data science or a related field. Proficiency in coding and a  strong capacity in data analysis and statistical analysis is desired.

Location preference: Baltimore, MD with flexibility for a remote work option for qualified candidates.
