NASA Dragonfly Student and Early Career Investigator Program

Saturn’s moon Titan is the only moon in our solar system with a dense atmosphere, which supports an Earth-like hydrological cycle of methane clouds, rain, lakes and seas. Complex organic surface materials preserve, in a deep freeze, the types of organic chemicals that were present on Earth before life developed. Titan's icy crust floats atop an interior liquid water ocean. Dragonfly is a rotorcraft lander (an octocopter) that will explore a variety of locations on Titan. Launching in 2027 and reaching Titan in 2033, Dragonfly will journey farther than any robotic lander has ever traveled. With one hop on average every other Titan day (one Titan day equals 16 Earth days), the rotorcraft will travel from its initial landing site to areas over 100 kilometers away during the planned ~3.3-year mission.

Each student Investigator will work with one or more Dragonfly mission team members to conduct Titan research, help formulate Dragonfly mission science and operations plans, or assist in the development of instrumentation, hardware, or testing. A cohort of up to three (3) qualified graduate students from U.S. colleges and universities is selected annually for two-year terms to work with the Dragonfly team. Students dedicate 3.6 months per year (concentrated during summer and academic breaks) at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory and/or their Dragonfly mentor's home institution and will receive annual research stipends and funding for travel to Dragonfly team meetings and to publish and present results at a scientific conference.

An intent of this program is to broaden mission participation; thus, it is intended for students who are not affiliated with, and whose faculty and/or research advisors are not involved with, Dragonfly or other NASA spacecraft missions. Students who are majoring in broad STEM fields such as chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, engineering and computer science, and who do not have a background in planetary science, the geosciences, atmospheric science, or their associated subfields, are especially encouraged to apply.

More information about this program, including eligibility requirements, FAQs and how to apply, can be found at https://dragonfly.jhuapl.edu/Student-Opportunities/

Interested students may also contact Program Coordinator Dr. Lynnae Quick at: Lynnae.C.Quick@nasa.gov

Applying:

When applying, the candidate should include in an attachment (1) a cover letter, (2) a curriculum vitae, CV, (3) the name and contact information for the prospective faculty advisor at their home institution, and (4) a 2-3 sentence statement from the prospective faculty advisor in which they agree to support the student, should they be selected to work on Dragonfly.

Eligibility:

An intent of this program is to broaden mission participation; thus, it is intended for students who are not affiliated with, and whose faculty and/or research advisors are not involved with, Dragonfly or other spacecraft missions. Students who do not have a background in planetary science, the geosciences, atmospheric science, or their associated subfields are encouraged to apply.

Eligible students will have at least a 3.0 GPA

Eligible students must be U.S. citizens pursuing a master's or doctoral degree in the physical sciences, biological sciences, computer sciences, mathematics or engineering at a U.S. institution.

Applicants must have demonstrated ability to conduct independent research or development

Applicants must have excellent organizational and communication skills (written and oral)

In addition to a mentor on the Dragonfly team whose leads this project, applicants must identify a faculty member at their home institution who can serve as a faculty mentor for the 2-year duration of their participation in the program. See above instructions on submission of a statement of support from the faculty mentor

UMBC offers a variety of options for minor programs and certificate programs at the undergraduate level.

Not to be confused with graduate certificates, all undergraduate minors, and certificates must be done in conjunction with an undergraduate degree program. However, this stipulation presents many benefits to your academic journey at UMBC.

Here are the top reasons why you should consider adding minors and certificates to your undergraduate career:

Most minors and certificates contain about 6-8 courses as requirements and may partially overlap with other requirements coinciding with your GEPs or major coursework.

NOTE: Some minors (I.e., Minor in Social Welfare) are not eligible for students already majoring in the related bachelor's program (I.e., Social Work, B.A.). Likewise, some programs limit how many courses can double count or come from transfer coursework-- Always ask an academic advisor before making assumptions!

Instead of taking on a double major, a minor or certificate could help manage graduation timelines while incorporating multiple academic disciplines.

You can earn academic credits for areas of study that you may have previously only pursued as a hobby (e.g.,Theatre, Music, Dance, Photography, etc.)

Declaring minors and certificates are great ways to reach upper-level elective minimums and work towards other general graduation requirements tailored to an additional field of interest (e.g.,Intercultural Communication, Media and Communications Studies, etc.)

Going beyond your major requirements to complete a minor or certificate is a solid avenue toward expanding your undergraduate academic credentials and diversifying your professional portfolio.

Some of our minors and certificates are designed to equip you with foundational knowledge for niche industries (i.e.,Entrepreneurship, Health, Wellness and Aging, Security Studies, etc.)

Discuss adding a minor or certificate at your next academic advising appointment. Enhance your UMBC experience by broadening your network with students and professors you may have never encountered in your major alone. Doing so indicates your successful completion of an "extra credit" program that could be a game-changer for your resume/CV, job interviews, professional/graduate school applications...you name it!

Update on UMBC Bold: Campus Conversations

<Tagline>February 8, 2023</Tagline>

Dear UMBC Community,

I continue to be amazed by the inspiration and imagination I see every day on this campus. I am grateful for your commitment to this community in so many ways and am excited to share our next steps for UMBC Bold: Campus Conversations. This is your opportunity to offer your perspective on the current state of the university and your aspirations for the future.

In partnership with our Committee Chairs, we have assembled eleven subcommittees that represent areas, topics, and constituents that we believe are vital to the success of this institution. You can review a full list of these subcommittees, and the community members who will lead them, on our UMBC Bold website.

I have charged the chairs with hosting and facilitating campus conversations where all community members - students, faculty, staff, alumni, and partners - have the chance to participate. These sessions will focus on three guiding questions:

1. What achievements and core values should we celebrate and nurture?

2. What challenges might hinder our ability to advance our mission and vision?

3. What are your bold aspirations for the future of UMBC?

We will share the schedule of conversations soon. If you are not able to attend these sessions, or you would like to provide additional information, you can also respond to the three questions using this online form.

At the conclusion of this process, I will be meeting with the committee to understand their findings, which will be incorporated into the university’s strategic planning process. The results of these meetings, and the comments that you submit, will inform our decision making going forward. Since candor is important, the listening sessions will not be recorded, and comments will not be attributed to individuals when reported out.

We are a stronger UMBC community when we talk to each other, share our ideas, and challenge our assumptions. Thank you for your engagement and I look forward to our conversations to come.

Sincerely,
