Intern of the Week: Atul Sharma

<Tagline>Check out Atul's Data Analyst Internship</Tagline>

Name: Atul Sharma

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site: Aion Management LLC

Position Title: Data Analyst

Major or Program: Information Systems

Current Class Level: Master's Student

Work Term: Spring 2023

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

I assist my senior manager in building customized report dashboards on PowerBI and perform other tasks assigned by him.

Attend calls or meetings and coordinate with other senior managers in building reports.

Gather information for reporting by combining data from various databases into a single destination table, running longer-running data processing queries across several databases, and using BI tools and dashboards to translate numerous and complex streams of information into clear, concise, and simple terms.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I heard about this position on May 22 and applied. After my resume was picked, I gave the online assessment, which was followed by 2 rounds of interviews. I was hired on 06/08/2022

Which of the following resources did you use to find your current experience?

UMBC Career Center, Career Fairs, UMBCworks, Networking Events (UMBC Connects, Info Sessions, Arts with A Purpose, etc.), LinkedIn or Other Social Media

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

This position is constantly changing. I've been learning a lot of new skills that are not only job-related but also necessary to become a more desirable team member.

Since my arrival, the company has undergone a significant transformation in terms of the technology and platform it uses for operations, and I have been fortunate to be a part of it. I've learned a lot about data integration, cloud computing, and data warehouses, which are really crucial skills to learn in this day and age. Moreover, all of my senior managers and co-workers have been extremely helpful and accommodating, which is one of the best aspects of this company.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

This Co-op has, in my opinion, given me a sense of belonging to my work. I enjoy the challenges that are thrown at me, and I have always performed above expectations. This has given me a lot of confidence in my abilities and earned me the trust of my seniors. I am now an essential member of my team.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Just believe in your skills and do not get disheartened by rejections.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

I believe the career center has done an excellent job for us students. The team has always been extremely accommodating and helpful. I suppose this internship has given me a better understanding of the work culture in the United States. I have gained a variety of skills that I do not believe I would have obtained without this internship. In my office, I've formed some wonderful personal and professional relationships, and I'm proud of what I've accomplished thus far.

New technology for on site vaccine and medicine production

Research led by Dr. Govind Rao, Director of Center for Advanced Sensor Technology and professor in the department of Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering is featured in a recent article posted on leaps.org titled “With This New Technology, Hospitals and Pharmacies Could Make Vaccines and Medicines Onsite, 2023” The story was written based on a preprint of a paper with Shayan Borhani, Chemical Engineering PhD candidate as the first author. Aaron Thole, Chemical Engineering PhD student and Dr. Doug Frey, professor in the department of Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering are also co-authors. (https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2022.12.19.521044v1).

The article describes a process to develop a compelling pandemic mitigation strategy to promptly suppress viral emergence at the source of an outbreak using proteins such as GRFT which are efficacious in neutralizing a broad range of viruses. This process is shown to produce a product with consistent purity and potency in less than 24 hours using cell-free biomanufacturing.

The collaborators demonstrated GRFT production using two independent cell-free systems, one plant and one microbial. Griffithsin purity and quality were verified using standard regulatory metrics. Efficacy was demonstrated in vitro against SARS-CoV-2 and HIV-1 and was nearly identical to that of GRFT expressed in vivo. The proposed production process is efficient and can be readily scaled up and deployed anywhere in the world where a viral pathogen might emerge. The current emergence of viral variants has resulted in frequent updating of existing vaccines and loss of efficacy for front-line monoclonal antibody therapies.

Dr. Rao wants to advance technology to the point where any hospital or pharmacy could load up the media containing molecular factories, mix up the necessary amino acids, nucleotides, and enzymes, and harvest the medications in a matter of hours. This will enable on-site and on-demand medication production. Once this approach is thoroughly validated it might revolutionize medicine-making even outside of hospitals and pharmacies and extend beyond urgent situations.

Webex Recording Retention Policy Changing March 6th

<Tagline>Webex recording, message and transcript Retention changing</Tagline>

Beginning Monday March 6th UMBC’s retention policy for Webex messages, recordings and other storage will change from indefinite to 3 years for meeting recordings and transcripts and 5 years for messages, files, and whiteboards. All content older than the retention period described above will be automatically deleted.

Webex, like many companies, is recognizing that the indefinite, unlimited storage model is not sustainable long term and is adjusting its policy to reflect that. UMBC’s adoption of Webex occurred predominantly in April of 2020 when the campus shifted to remote work and so UMBC’s new retention policy of 3 and 5 years, as described above, doesn’t pose an immediate concern for many. However, Faculty, Staff, and Students are urged to save important Webex content now before data is lost. DoIT recommends that any critical recordings and transcripts be downloaded and stored on Google Drive or MS Onedrive. Furthermore, users should consider how they store Webex content and develop a practice of moving important files, messages, recordings and transcripts to other locations periodically.

For more information on accessing and downloading your recordings please use this link.

We understand that for some this change will be inconvenient and present additional challenges. We are here to support you. If you have any questions or challenges regarding this change please let us know by contacting us at DoIT Technology Support Center.
