UMBC experts guide TV viewers through the promises and pitfalls of artificial intelligence

Over the past week, UMBC faculty and students have given primetime TV news watchers in Baltimore a glimpse of the frontiers of artificial intelligence (AI) research. WJZ, Baltimore’s CBS News affiliate, aired the AI series in six segments, four of which featured UMBC researchers.

Harnessing data to predict sea level rise

The Wednesday evening spot featured Vandana Janeja, chair of information systems (IS). She described how she and other researchers aim to harness artificial intelligence and new data analysis techniques to better predict how climate-driven changes at Earth’s poles, such as melting glaciers, could impact the rest of the world. Janeja directs iHARP, an NSF-funded institute based at UMBC that brings together data scientists and polar experts from across academia, industry, and the government to tackle a defining challenge of our times.

Connecting robots and AI

The Thursday evening segment featured UMBC faculty and students showcasing their work connecting AI and robots for applications such as disaster response and battlefield readiness. IS professors Aryya Gangopadhyay and Nirmalya Roy and computer science and electrical engineering (CSEE) associate professor Tinoosh Mohsenin from the Center for Real-time Distributed Sensing and Autonomy joined computer science students Kevin Rippy ’24, Warren Funk ’24, Hong Nguyen ’25, and Ben Polyakov ’23, computer engineering Ph.D. students Arnab Mazumder and Mozhgan Navardi, and information systems Ph.D. students Indrajeet Ghosh and Neil Kpamegan to explain the technology.

They demonstrated devices such as miniature drones and a robot that could be controlled from afar with hand motions. The researchers are working to develop the brains of such systems so that they can intelligently work with other robots and with human beings.

Explaining ChatGPT

On Friday, Anupam Joshi, professor of CSEE and director of the UMBC Center for Cybersecurity helped viewers grasp an AI invention now making headlines: ChatGPT. The sophisticated chatbot can write text ranging from computer code to essays on the American Revolution, but Joshi explained how it does make errors and should be used carefully.

Identifying harmful biases in AI

Finally, echoing the theme of responsible and cautious AI use, James Foulds, an assistant professor of IS, and Shaniah Reece, a senior majoring in IS, described to TV viewers how biases from the human world can find their way into AI systems, with harmful effects. They are working to identify such biases where they appear, improving the fairness of AI systems.

New Date: May 23, 2023

Abstract:

Marine boundary layer clouds cover a substantial portion of the global oceans and play an important role in determining the Earth's radiation budget. Their morphology, controlled by various dynamical factors and modulated by aerosols, is complex. It can range from single-layer stratiform in the high latitudes, mixtures of stratiform and cumuliform in the mid-latitudes, and mainly cumuliform in the tropics. Despite the distinct three-dimensional (3D) and heterogeneous nature of clouds, their interactions with radiation are often simplified to one-dimensional (1D) not only in models at all scales but also in satellite remote sensing applications. While it is a concern that the 1D simplification unavoidably introduces errors in cloud retrievals, missing critical information on 3D cloud properties has more profound impacts because it prevents us from offering much stronger observational constraints for understanding cloud-aerosol processes and improving model physics.

To address this issue, I will show recent advances in remote sensing of 3D clouds and near-cloud aerosols. Specifically, our new retrieval framework accounts for cloud heterogeneity, incorporates 3D radiative effects directly, and uses synergistic satellite observations. It also capitalizes on a particle flow filter approach for the first time, which solves the fully non-linear retrieval problem and provides realistic error estimates. Applications and implications of these retrievals for an improved understanding of clouds and aerosols also will be discussed.

Biography:

Dr. Christine Chiu is a Professor at the Department of Atmospheric Science, Colorado State University. Prior to joining CSU, she was an Associate Professor at the Department of Meteorology, University of Reading, United Kingdom, a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and an Associate Scientist at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.

Dr. Chiu has extensive experience in remote sensing and radiative transfer. She has been working on retrievals for cloud, precipitation, and aerosols; aerosol-cloud-precipitation interactions; and machine learning applications in cloud processes and radiative transfer. Dr. Chiu is currently serving as the Chair of the Cloud and Precipitation Measurements and Science Group for the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Climate Research Facility, and as a member of the International Radiation Commission and the Hyperspectral Imaging and Sounding of the Environment Program Committee. In the past, she has served as the Chair of the AMS Atmospheric Radiation Committee.

I just wanted to remind everyone that tomorrow (Thursday) is the last day to get tickets for the Honors College/Meyerhoff Charity Gala at the original price! ($15 for Honors College students and $20 for plus-ones)

Tickets WILL be sold at the door, but each type of ticket will be $5.00 more expensive--why deprive yourself of $5 or $10? Just get your tickets in the Honors College by tomorrow 4:00pm!

This is going to be a fantastic event, with dancing, hor d'oevres, a photo booth, raffle prizes, AND a chance to help Moveable Feast, a great local charity.

Finally, tickets are CASH ONLY, so hit the ATM before coming in! Hope to see you there--but don't worry, the Staff won't be there to cramp your style Lol
