Public Affairs (PUB) 300: Global Community Engagement & Social Change in South Africa
July 27 - August 13, 2023
3 credits

Course description: PUB 300 will engage students in academic, experiential and intercultural learning in and about South Africa. The course will focus on contemporary social challenges and the strategies that government, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and citizen activists are using to address them.

Course activities include:
  • Service-learning with local NGOs
  • Meetings with activists, NGO leaders and government officials
  • Visits to sites of historical and cultural significance, including Parliament, the District 6 Museum, Table Mountain, and the surrounding Western Cape region
  • Experiential learning activities including language, culture and cooking workshops
  • A safari and overnight stay at the Aquila Game Reserve

As part of our ongoing commitment to security, the Unix Infrastructure group will be conducting its quarterly system patching on Friday, February 24th and Saturday, February 25th.  While many of the systems will be patched without any service disruption, there are some systems which require the downtime of key services.  The schedule below outlines which key services will be offline and for how long.

Friday, 02/24/2023 between 5pm and 10pm (most systems will only be down for a short period during this time):

  • Access to Cyrus (legacy) email (accounts not migrated to UMBC Gmail)
    • All mail will be queued up and delivered after the server is patched
  • All HFS (afs) servers - gl.umbc.edu home directories will be offline
  • Between 9:00pm and 10pm only: Certain software licenses will be unavailable (autodesk, cadence, idl, schrodinger, xilinx, mathematica). 
  • Between 9:00pm and 10pm only: The web hosting environments (virthost) will be partially unavailable (pages will be available but any database calls will not work)
  • Between 5:00pm and 6:30pm only: LDAP-Master and Webadmin will be taken down for system maintenance.  During this time account creations and password changes will be unavailable.  Account authentication and logins will not be affected.
Saturday, 02/25/2023 between 7am and 8am (most systems will only be down for a short period during this time):
  • myUMBC lite page will be up resulting in reduced myUMBC functionality
  • Wiki will be unavailable

Our goal is to provide a better understanding of The Conversation's pitch process, what makes a great pitch and how to concisely convey your story idea to our editors.

Learn about the 2024-2025 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program and other exciting Fulbright opportunities at this workshop for CAHSS faculty, presented by the Institute of International Education (IIE), which develops and implements the Fulbright program.

Dr. Julie Taylor, IIE Director of Academic Relations for the Fulbright program, will provide information on the upcoming competition cycle that starts in February 2023, and on the Catalog of Awards and other Fulbright programs for faculty.

Dr. Brian Souders, Associate Director for Global Engagement Opportunities in the Center for Global Engagement, and UMBC's Fulbright Scholar Liaison, will discuss support for faculty applicants. Tips for preparing strong Fulbright applications, initiating outreach to international host institutions, and doing short- and long-term planning, will also be covered. 

Dr. Tanya Saunders, Associate Professor, LLC Program, will speak about their experience as a Fulbright Scholar in Brazil.
 
Time will be given for Q&A.

We are pleased to announce that the student application for CoLab 2023 is now open. The application deadline is Monday, March 13th. Students work on interdisciplinary project teams to develop narrative-based research products that support the mission of community partners. Students receive a $3000 stipend for successful completion of the program, as well as a tuition scholarship that covers the costs of the internship course. 

We are very excited about the 5 projects for Summer 2023:
