Perch Parking Has Arrived at UMBC!

<Tagline>Finding a Parking Space has Never Been Easier</Tagline>

Have you ever wasted time circling around a parking lot looking for a spot on campus? UMBC Parking Services is excited to introduce Perch Parking. Perch Parking was created by UMBC alumni, who understand the challenges of finding parking on campus during peak times.

Perch Parking, currently utilized in Lot 3,is a cutting-edge parking detection system that uses AI and cameras to provide real-time information on available parking spots. The innovative system uses cameras mounted on strategic light poles to monitor the parking lot, allowing the AI to update a 3D map in real-time. All you need to do is download the Perch Parking app from the Apple App Store (Android version coming soon) and you'll have a miniature live model of the parking lot in the palm of your hand.

This service is still in its early stages. By participating in the open beta, you can help to fine-tune the app. This also could lead to the expansion of the system into more lots on campus.

Join us today in the open beta testing of the Perch Parking app. Your feedback will be invaluable in our quest to help make the parking experience at UMBC a smoother one.

Christopher Slaughter '23, M31 computer engineering, has won a Gates Cambridge Scholarship to pursue graduate work at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom next fall. Slaughter is the fifth student from UMBC to be recognized with the prestigious award, established by the University of Cambridge in 2000 with a donation from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Gates Cambridge Scholars are selected from around the world for their academic talents and commitment to improving the lives of others. Each year around 25 of the 80 total awards are offered to students from the United States.

Guided by a passion for improving people's lives, Slaughter began his first of many biomedical research projects. At UMBC's Bioelectronics Laboratory, he worked on technology to help patients who are insensitive to pain avoid burns. Most recently, he has been working at UMBC's Center for Advanced Sensor Technology (CAST) in the lab of Govind Rao, professor of chemical and biochemical engineering.

Slaughter will pursue a Ph.D. in electrical engineering at the University of Cambridge, which is the world's third oldest surviving university, founded in 1209. His career goals are to develop novel biomedical technologies that meet the healthcare needs of under-resourced communities.

Slaughter was named a Goldwater Scholar in 2022, recognizing him among the top engineering students in the nation. He is president of the UMBC chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers and, through volunteering at local schools, encourages middle and high school students to develop technical skills and aspire to careers in science and technology. In addition, he serves as the vice president of the UMBC chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the UMBC Club Taekwondo team. He also serves as the lead peer advisor in the Meyerhoff Scholars Program, responsible for organizing events and managing peer advisor relationships across the program.

Dear Graduate Assistants,

We are starting a series of weekly posts where every Wednesday we will share with you one of the helpful resources or GA-specific topic for your information. This week we will compare Collective Bargaining and the Meet & Confer Policy.

Collective Bargaining:

Collective bargaining is good faith negotiations by authorized representatives of employees and their employer with the intention of reaching an agreement about wages, hours, and other terms of conditions of employment.

The benefits of collective bargaining for graduate assistants include:

Improved wages and benefits: through collective bargaining, graduate assistants can negotiate for better wages, health insurance, and other benefits.

Job security: A collective bargaining contract provides protection against arbitrary layoffs or other forms of job insecurity.

A voice in the workplace: Collective bargaining allows graduate assistants to have a say in the decisions that affect their working conditions and employment.

Legal representation: If there are disputes or disagreements, graduate assistants are represented by their union during the collective bargaining process.

Meet & Confer:

Meet and Confer (M&C) is a policy adopted by the University System of Maryland (USM) which allows Graduate Assistants (GAs) to engage in formal discussions with the administration regarding employment issues.

Graduate Assistant (GAs) can use M&C platform to voice their concern regarding issues related to employment benefits, compensation, etc. in the absence of unionization and collective bargaining.

GAAC meets with the administration for these discussions twice a year. In addition to meeting with the administration M&C also allows GAs to vote on whether or not to bring in outside representation (including unions) confer with GAAC during the discussions. However, the negotiations do not legally bind the Graduate School to take any action.
