Meeting Schedule and Patapsco Hike

Hello everyone,

This week we voted on when to have the monthly Outdoor Recreation Meeting. The winning time block is Fridays from 4:30 to 5pm. As such, our meetings will be on the first Friday of every month from 4:30 to 5pm. Our first meeting will be on March 3rd.

Thank you to everyone who voted on the meeting schedule poll.

Patapsco Hike

Our first outing of the Spring 2023 semester is going to be our traditional Patapsco Valley State Park hike on February 26th. We will meet at the parking lot at Swinging Bridge (on River Rd) at 1pm to be on the trail by 1:15.

Typically we hike to Patapsco from campus, but this time around we wanted to try something different. This time around, we will be doing a short 5-mile hike around the Cascade falls loop and around the Orange Grove area.

A map of the planned route can be found here. We encourage you to print it out as the park has relatively poor cell coverage.

If you have any questions, please head over to our Discord to stay up to date on everything that is happening.

Six month roadmap previewed for Ultra courses

<Tagline>Focus on assessment, grading, content, learner analytics</Tagline>

Over the last year, Ultra received more than 150 enhancements and new features to strengthen and improve the new course for faculty and students.
In March, Ultra courses will receive improvements to multiple submissions, allowing faculty to quickly shift between student attempts for grading and comparison, as well as a downloadable PDF version of the SafeAssign report. More information about the March release is available on the What's New in Ultra FAQ with a forthcoming update expected to myUMBC before the Blackboard site is updated early March.

In April, we expect to see two improvements requested by UMBC faculty and one new feature:

Multiple grading schema: Create more than one grading schema in your Ultra course including pass/fail or complete/incomplete.

Import questions into Question Banks: Abandon those messy gradebook columns from unused tests and create question banks instead!

Search course content: Quickly find course content by searching title and description. This feature will be available to students and faculty. Exclusive to Ultra courses.

These are not the only enhancements expected in April, but the most exciting to share.

Although Anthology also offered a roadmap for Original, the majority of development continues to center in usability, accessibility, security, and storage management. A few enhancements focus on usability such as streamlining the assignment submission process for students with a few improvements slated for long term development (e.g., more than six months).

The Instructional Technology team tracks and shares monthly updates to its myUMBC group and presents a What's New in Ultra for Teaching & Learning webinar every semester.
How to Write an Eye-Catching Cover Letter

<Tagline>Top 10 tips to make your cover letter stand out</Tagline>

Here is a scenario: You are in the midst of applying for a job, submitted your resume and then the "Add a Cover letter" option comes up. Oh no! And now you have to write a cover letter....ugh!

Cover letter writing can seem like such a daunting task; however, it doesn't have to be. Here are some tips for writing a great cover letter from one of your Career Peers, Natalia Alfaro, who proofreads a lot of cover letters while working at the Career Center.

While you are writing, here are 10 tips to keep in mind when writing a cover letter:

Cover Letters Should Expand On Experience, Not Repeat The Resume

All experiences you write about in your cover letter should be listed on your resume. But be mindful not to summarize your resume in your cover letter.

Keep It Short And To The Point

Ideal cover letters are 3/4-page to a full page in length. A cover letter that uses purposeful and precise wording conveys strong communication skills. Click here for a formatting guide

Open With Position and Source

Whoever reads your letter will first want to know how you found out about this position and what position you're applying for. So it is recommended to include this information in your opening sentence. Click here for sample cover letters.

Research

Make it clear that you spent time researching the organization and that you understand their work and mission. Gather information from sources such as the organization's website, LinkedIn, etc.

Explain Why You Want The Position

Each cover letter you write should always answer the question, "Why this position?" Explain how this position fits with your career goals and why you’re interested or excited about this position, preferably in the opening paragraph.

Describe Your Specific Contributions

List one or two examples of how your skills, experiences, and qualities directly fit the company's needs and position description. Answer questions such as: "How can the company benefit from your experiences?" and "What are you bringing to the table?"

Be Convincing

This is a letter to persuade the recruiter that you are qualified and right for the position. Focus on your strengths and use positive, powerful nouns and adjectives (Page 16 of the Career Guide).

Avoid Overusing "I"

Minimize the use of "I", "me", and "my". Instead, use "you" and "your". For example, instead of "I believe your company would benefit...." try "Your company could benefit from...."

End With a Strong Action Statement

The final paragraph should clearly state the exact manner in which you will follow up and request an interview, as well as how the recruiter can contact you.

Proofread !!!

Re-read your letter, Schedule an appointment at the Career Center in Handshake, or attend drop-in hours to have your letter reviewed by a Career Peer.

Cover letter writing is a learned skill; the more you write the better you will get! So don't stress, and use all the resources the Career Center offers. Good luck on your cover letter writing!

Best Regards,
