Designed to prepare its members to be leaders for the world, Lambda Chi Alpha has a mission to inspire the highest level of character, values, scholarship, and service in each of its members. Lambda Chi Alpha serves to complement higher education by providing opportunities for academic achievement, leadership development, and lifelong friendships.

Rush week is a semesterly initiative intended to recruit undergraduate students of sterling character and high scholastic aptitude. Our events serve as a platform for brothers to meet potential candidates and to address any questions they may have about the fraternity. Students who carry a respectable GPA, are already heavily involved with university organizations, and demonstrate that they possess the maturity and resolve needed to excel academically while being in a social fraternity are considered for bids.

At Lambda Chi Alpha, we believe the college experience includes balancing academic and extracurricular activities with an active social life. While the fraternity offers a multitude of academic, leadership, and philanthropic opportunities, the fraternity also presents a myriad of social events and networking opportunities. Over the course of the year, we host dozens of social events that give the brothers and students from neighboring schools a chance to mingle and unwind. For brothers, other social events include mixers with local sororities, formal date evenings, and invite only house events.

Lambda Chi Alpha holds its brothers to the highest standard, as such we have been awarded the highest cumulative GPA average among the Interfraternity Council many times. We are the oldest social fraternity at UMBC as well as one of the oldest in the country.

As per UMBC's interfraternity council bylaws, students become eligible upon completion of a full semester (minimum 12 credits) at any postsecondary institution. At minimum, candidates who meet our chapter's character and GPA standards are considered. Candidates may then be evaluated based on members' experiences as well as references from sororities, professors, and alumni.

For more information, check out our website at:
http://www.umbclca.com/

Spring 2023 Rush Schedule:

IRS Job Posting information from recent UMBC grad

<Tagline>But application due soon</Tagline>

I'm forwarding a job opportunity with my team at the IRS. We're
looking for a college graduate (or soon to be) with an
Economics/Financial Economics degree for an Economist position in
Washington DC. Those who have graduated within the last two years are
also eligible to apply. A student with at least a 3.0 GPA will start at
GS-07 ($53,105) with full federal benefits. The promotion potential for
the position is GS-12 ($94,199-$122,459). The lower end of that range
can be reached in 3 years with satisfactory performance evaluations. The
good thing about federal service is that higher promotions or lateral
movement to other agencies (Treasury HQ, SEC, BEA, CFPB, OCC etc.) with
higher promotion ladders is always possible, just not guaranteed.

I
HIGHLY recommend anyone with prior federal internships, tax experience
(ex. VITA), statistical programming experience (ex. SAS, R, STATA
etc.) to apply. The job is mostly remote but with some days in the
office. The deadline is February 14th, so they would need to apply very
soon. Putting together a federal resume in USAJOBS should only take an
hour or two and submitting the application with an unofficial transcript
     is straightforward.

Applicants have to be
filtered through a neutral reviewer at OPM before reaching the hiring
committee so if any of the students have the following experience,
please reword the following bullet points with specific details in their
federal resume (I bolded what's especially important):

Experience applying the methods and principles of economics and their application to research projects

Experience with research and study design and administration processes

Experience in determining the economic significance of information reported on tax returns and a working experience of both present and prior tax laws

Experience using computer programming languages and statistical software packages (ex. SAS, R, STATA etc.)

And,
of course, I am happy to offer interview advice and put in a good word
for UMBC grads. My manager told me to get the word out wherever there
    are more of me.

I hope you all are doing well! I miss you guys and hope the semester started smoothly.

Need Help Planning my Wedding

<Tagline>Need someone super organized who wants to make money</Tagline>

Hello, me and my fiancée are getting married May 20 2023 in Anne Arundel County. We are both alum.

I have mostly gathered all the major elements of the wedding and set up informal (and some formal) agreements with some people (photo, food, helping hands, beer and wine, etc).

There are a few loose ends and my fiancée is beginning to worry that she won’t have someone who can walk her thru what to do the day of the wedding. Personally I am a big picture guy but I know that I am not the most organized. I need someone to discuss with me what I have done thus far, where I need to go, and anything I am missing.

I need someone who has experience with weddings that can consult with me as I finalize getting the various parts together (this is a low key inexpensive wedding and reception). Day of support would be especially useful.

Is there anyone out there who has done this before and is willing to help?

Let’s talk and see what’s possible, what you offer, and what you’d charge. I don’t even know exactly what I’m looking for here, I just know the formal wedding planners are super expensive and I have already done too much legwork to give up.

The UMBC instructors included Sarah Bass and Tara Carpenter (Chemistry) and Eric Anderson, Lili Cui and Cody Goolsby-Cole (Physics).
Specifically, Bass and Carpenter focused on the use of open educational resources (OER) and students' time on task practice in CHEM 101 and 102. Anderson, Cui and Goolsby-Cole focused on providing timely feedback on low-stakes assessments. Findings from both departments’ projects included better student-instructor relationships in the face-to-face classes of spring 2022 compared to the previous year's online classes. Also, the results of student surveys showed positive changes in student perceptions of feedback. Finally, all projects adopted an approach that emphasized using open educational resources (OER), where possible, and supporting productive practice through adaptive learning and formative assessments.

Long term, the goal of ELE is to eventually use these approaches to inform redesign of large, introductory STEM courses that promote equity in achievement for all students. Toward this end, a preliminary analysis of the use of adaptive learning in CHEM 102 showed an overall 10% improvement in exam scores and a decrease in the score gap between white students and students of color.

Note: As an experiment, the first "draft" of this post was initially generated by ChatGPT, summarizing the full ELE project report to focus on UMBC participants, and then revised by John Fritz and Tom Penniston.
