Breaking the Bamboo Ceiling Book Purchase

<Tagline>Career Strategies for Asians</Tagline>

Dear AAAFSC Community,

I hope you had a lovely winter break and a great start of this new semester.

One of the conversations we had during our January lunch meeting was career development. The book was recommended by Hua Lu (Biology). If you are interested in reading this book, please submit your information using the Google Form below by Wednesday 2/8/2023. We will purchase the book and deliver it to your campus mailbox. If there is sufficient interest among us, we will have a book discussion in Fall 2023.

Submit your request here: https://forms.gle/gjdSBytGgwVnvVkPA

An essential career guide for every Asian American—and all their co-workers and managers—that explains how traditional Asian cultural values are at odds with Western corporate culture.

Leading Asian American career coach and advocate Jane Hyun explains that the lack of Asian Americans in executive suite positions is brought about by a combination of Asian cultures and traditions strait-jacketing Asian Americans in the workplace, and how the group’s lack of vocal affirmation in popular media and culture, afflicts them with a “perpetual foreigner syndrome” in the eyes of Americans who don’t know enough to understand the challenges placed on Asian Americans in the corporate environment.

Filled with anecdotes and case studies from her own consulting experience covering the gamut of Asian Americans from various backgrounds, the book discusses how being Asian affects the way they interact with colleagues, managers, and clients, and will offer advice and real world solutions while exposing the challenges encountered.

For the Asian reader, the book will help them to see the cultural barriers they subconsciously place in their own career paths and how to overcome them. For the non-Asian reader, the book serves as a primer for promoting optimal working relationships with Asians, and will help start a dialogue that will benefit all.

<Tagline>Student org spotlights all week!</Tagline>

Welcome or welcome back to campus! This week our office is shining a spotlight on pre-health student organizations on campus. Joining an organization is a great way to connect with others who share your career aspirations. If you're interested in one or more of these organizations, be sure to check them out during Involvement Fest on Wednesday, February 8th from noon-2pm in the Retriever Activities Center (RAC) (details here) or visit their myUMBC Groups page.

Pre-Medical Society

The Pre-Medical Society was formed to increase student awareness of medicine and other health-related fields and to develop the skills necessary to prepare for medical school, all in a community of like-minded undergraduates at UMBC. We aim to help our members develop an understanding of and deep concern for health care by providing education and guidance throughout the admissions process, broadening member knowledge of the various fields, degrees, and subspecialties in medicine, and providing various activities that strengthen the core interpersonal and intrapersonal competencies necessary to become a successful medical professional.

Our weekly meeting takes place every Friday from 12:00 pm-1:00 pm. Our activities include hosting presentations from different medical school directors of admissions, current medical students who previously attended UMBC, and undergraduate research programs. We hope that through society membership, our members are empowered to move boldly and surely toward their career goals.

Retriever Essentials FAQs:

Q: Do you have [food/toiletry item] in stock?

A: Maybe! Currently, it's hard to predict what we will have, but we make an effort to stock toiletries, frozen meat and veggies, milk, gluten-free items, ready-to-eat meals, and even baby items as often as we can. We can't guarantee any one item will be available, but there's always a variety of items to choose from.

Q: What are the eligibility requirements to get food at The Essential Space, Free Farmer's Markets, and Food Zones?

A: None! Everyone is welcome and encouraged to come. We know financial decision-making is complex, so come fill up or just drop by to check us out. We won't ask you for any documentation.

Q: If I get food and toiletries from The Essential Space, won't I be taking it away from someone who needs it more?

A: No, we have enough to go around. Our community has generously provided items to us so we can redistribute them to you to make your semester just a little bit easier. As a student and a human being, you're entitled to a filling and nutritious diet.

Q: How often can I come to The Essential Space?

A: As often as you want to. Welcome!

Bella was the lead author for the article entitled, “Growing
Dahlias, Dahlia coccinea Cav., for Commercial Cut Flower Production in
    Aquaponics and AutoPots”.

Abstract

Commercial floriculture is years behind food agriculture in
the adoption of organic and sustainable practices and enacts a heavy toll on
the environment, resulting in excessive water usage, soil erosion, heavy
pesticide use, and a massive carbon footprint. In this study, Dahlias (D.
Coccinea) were grown in AutoPots fed by an established aquaponics system to explore
the sustainability and environmental impacts of aquaponics on commercial
floriculture. Dahlias were grown starting from both tubers and cuttings, for a
six month period, in a greenhouse setting, assessing the bloom time, bloom
quality, stem count, pesticide usage, water usage, and tuber formation. Dahlias
bloomed in a typical time frame, compared to field grown plants, the quality of
the blooms was equivalent to field grown, the stem counts were significantly
lower than field grown, pesticide usage was slightly decreased, water usage was
dramatically lower than field grown, and tuber formation was not impacted. To
date, this is the first published evidence that Dahlias can be grown in
aquaponics, that typical environmental benefits were observed when growing
Dahlias via this method, and tuber formation was not hindered by the high
moisture conditions produced by a coupled aquaculture system.
