Intern of the Week: Niyati Rami

<Tagline>Check out Niyati's Internship with T. Rowe Price</Tagline>

Name: Niyati Rami

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site: T.Rowe Price

Position Title: Global Technology Intern

Major or Program: Information Systems

Current Class Level: Senior

Work Term: Summer 2022

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

This summer, I worked with T.Rowe Price's Disaster Recovery team, which is responsible for establishing disaster recovery plan, developing the plan's processes and procedures, and implementing the plan in the case of a crisis to ensure data recovery is attainable. My daily responsibilities included assisting with the planning and preparation of this year's Disaster Recovery Exercise. Along with that, I worked on developing a dashboard for our team to visualize buildout times of all of the application being tested as well as recovery time goals (RTO) of those applications. I also worked on the development of "how-to" manuals for my team.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

This past spring I was looking for internships for the summer and I saw an email from Christine Routzan stating that T.Rowe Price was looking to fill some intern positions and I submitted my resume. Few weeks later I received a call from the recruiter for screening purposes and then scheduled an interview with the manager.

Which of the following resources did you use to find your current experience?

Networking Events (UMBC Connects, Info Sessions, Arts with A Purpose, etc.)

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

Intern events! T.Rowe Price hosts wonderful events throughout the summer to keep all the interns feel connected and network.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I feel my work has had an impact since the projects I worked on this summer will be utilized as future training manuals for the incoming interns next year, as I was one of the team's first interns. In addition, my aid in creating a dashboard let the audience see the data, making it simpler compared to simply gazing at a spreadsheet.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Believe in yourself and your abilities or else no one else will. Keep applying and be consistent.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

I believe sky's the limit!

History Research Opportunity

<Tagline>Summer Research Opportunity Programs (SROPs)</Tagline>

Hello Fellow History Students,

I am reaching out to share a great research opportunity at UMD.

Enslaved: Peoples of the Historical Slave Trade (Enslaved.org) is an open-source, open-access online discovery platform to explore the lives of the enslaved. The project, launched to the public in December 2020, is generously funded by the Mellon Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and other private and public funders who support the intersections of public humanities, data sciences, and inclusive academic pipeline development. In partnership with the University of Maryland’s Graduate School and the College of Arts and Humanities, Enslaved.org launched its first Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) in 2021.

The third iteration of the Enslaved.org SROP will be hosted at the University of Maryland and the University of California, Riverside. The 2023 cohort will participate in a seven-week (June 5-July 21, 2023) residential research experience, working closely with project faculty and partners to learn methods for data-informed historical research, develop a dataset to be published in the Journal of Slavery and Data Preservation related to history of enslavement and the recovery of enslaved lives in State of Maryland, and share their findings with academic and public audiences.

Successful applicants will work closely with the program mentors, meet with various members of the Enslaved.org team, and participate in seminars to learn more about graduate studies and the application process. Meetings will vary between in-person and remote. Health and safety guidelines permitting, field experiences will include guided research opportunities in several libraries and archives, as well as visits to historic sites in regions surrounding College Park. The program ends with a five-day Scholars Institute, to be held at the UCR Palm Desert Center (Palm Desert, CA), culminating with a hybrid public presentation of research findings.

Participants will receive a stipend to cover basic living expenses during the program. In addition, group housing in College Park and travel to and between research sites in Maryland/DC/Virginia are covered by the program, as well as transportation and accommodations for the Scholars Institute in Southern California, the week of July 17-21, 2023.

The link to the application information is down below and the deadline is February 10th.

https://gradschool.umd.edu/summerresearch

I participated in this program last summer and so if you have any questions or concerns. Please feel free to reach out.

Founded in 1989 at the University of Maryland, MSL has provided an invaluable education in civics and leadership to Maryland's students for more than three decades.

At MSL events, campus leaders hone their speech, debate, and political skills in a simulation of the Maryland General Assembly, gaining real-world experience working within the legislative process. They network with other young activists and aspiring policy wonks, learning skills that prepare them for careers in public service.

In addition to the legislative simulation, MSL brings political and civic leaders from all parts of Maryland to our events to speak with students and answer their questions. Governors, Lieutenant Governors, Attorneys General, Comptrollers, leaders of the House and Senate, members of Congress, Mayors, Councilmembers, and countless other local, state, and federal officials have participated in MSL events over the years.

MSL alumni have gone on to serve in the Maryland General Assembly, the Governor's Office, work in Congress and the Executive Branch, across federal agencies, and lead successful careers in law, politics, journalism, civil service, academia, and much more.

Pre-Health Society Spotlight: Phi Delta Epsilon

<Tagline>Student org spotlights all week!</Tagline>

Welcome or welcome back to campus! This week our office is shining a spotlight on pre-health student organizations on campus. Joining an organization is a great way to connect with others who share your career aspirations. If you're interested in one or more of these organizations, be sure to check them out during Involvement Fest on Wednesday, February 8th from noon-2pm in the Retriever Activities Center (RAC) (details here) or visit their myUMBC Groups page.

Are you pre-med? If so, join the Phi Delta Epsilon phamily this spring!

What is Phi Delta Epsilon (PhiDE)? PhiDE is UMBC’s only all-inclusive professional medical fraternity. Our local chapter is part of the largest medical fraternity in the world with over 100 premedical and medical chapters since Phi Delta Epsilon’s founding at Cornell University of Medical College in 1914!

Why join PhiDE? Our 40 members can provide you with a great support system, unique mentoring opportunities (like how to do well in your classes and how to study for the MCAT) as well as connections to shadowing, research, and clinical opportunities. Joining our phamily also allows you to network with the thousands of PhiDE-affiliated undergraduate students, medical students, and physicians around the world.

Above all, joining our phamily allows you to make lifelong friendships and memories with a group of amazing individuals!

What do we do as a professional fraternity? We meet weekly on Thursdays where we often have guest speakers (alumni, medical students, and physicians) come in to do very informative talks! We also participate together in service projects to give back to the local Baltimore community, and outside of chapter meetings and services, we also like to get bubble tea, grab food, and just have a good time with our fellow fratters!

How can I join PhiDE? Please visit our Instagram page @umbcphide or visit linktree.com/umbcphide to learn more.

We are excited to see you in the next upcoming weeks!
