Last week (January 9 & 10, 2023) iHARP, an inaugural NSF HDR Institute, held its first in-person All Hands meeting to discuss current and upcoming projects as well as to network with researchers and scientists who specialize in data or polar sciences.

Taking place in the Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Building on the UMBC campus, the two-day event kicked off with opening remarks from Dr. Sylvia Spengler of the National Science Foundation, Dr. Karl Steiner, VP of Research and Dr. Keith Bowman, Dean of the College of Engineering and Information Technology both of UMBC.

Dr. Vandana Janeja, Director of iHARP, provided an overview of the research center to the 80+ attendees. There were 11 project presentations ranging from “Mapping the Subglacial Bed Topography from Surface Observation using Machine Learning” presented by Dr. Jianwu Wang and graduate assistant, Homayra Alam of UMBC and Dr. Mathieu Morlighem of Dartmouth College to “Bayesian calibration of ice sheet models,” presented by Dr. Andy Aschwanden of the University of Alaska, Fairbanks.

Breakout sessions posed the question of “How can we reduce the
uncertainty in prediction of sea level rise?” After several lively
discussions, ideas that were consistent between the groups were to
address the discrepancy in predictions among different models and to
bring together people with interdisciplinary skills.

Poster presentations included
“Machine Learning Residual Ensemble Technique for Arctic Sea Ice Extent
Forecasting,” by Louis Lapp of the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, “On
the role of aerosol atmospheric rivers (AAR) in snow darkening and ice
melting over the polar region,” by Supid Chakraborty of the Jet
Propulsion Laboratory, Christopher Shuman, research associate professor
scientist at UMBC GESTAR II, and Atefeh Jebeli, Emam Hussain, Sara
Khanjani, Saydeh Karabatis, and Xingyan Li each students at UMBC.

The event concluded with remarks from UMBC President Dr. Valerie
Sheares Ashby on how wonderful it is to see this amazing work come from
such a diverse group of students, researchers and faculty members and is
proud UMBC has such a center doing this important work.

iHARP Mission:

iHARP conducts data intensive research, education, outreach, and
cyberinfrastructure development that will transform understanding of the
effects of climate change in polar regions. This institute brings
together stakeholders and leading scholars in data science and polar
science to reduce uncertainties in projecting Greenland and Antarctica’s
future mass balance, associated sea-level rise, and impacts on global
    communities.

HPEC Fall 2024 Cohort interest deadlines are approaching!

<Tagline>Alumni/Current Students - Fill out our interest form today!</Tagline>

For Medical and Dental School Applicants, the UMBC Health Professions Evaluation Committee's (HPEC) Cohort process - which begins with exercises to help applicants prepare the materials they need to complete their professional school application, and results in a Committee Letter from the HPEC to accompany an applicant's other Letters of Recommendation - is set in motion nearly a year and half before an applicant plans to enter Medical or Dental School.

The next HPEC Cohort, supporting applicants planning to enter Medical or Dental School in Fall 2024, is about to begin!

Information regarding the process of expressing an interest in joining the Health Professions Evaluation Committee (HPEC) Fall 2024 Cohort has been posted to the PreMedical & PreDental Advising Office web site. Follow the link below to view the Minimum Requirements for participation and to access the online forms through which you can express your interest.

The HPEC Cohort process serves current UMBC Undergraduate students, and UMBC Alumni who completed an Undergraduate (Bachelor's) degree at UMBC within the past five (5) years.

The deadlines for expression of interest from First-Time Applicants to Medical or Dental School who wish to join the HPEC Fall 2024 Cohort are:

11:59 pm on February 1, 2023 for ALUMNI (former students who completed their Bachelor's degree at UMBC between May 2018 and December 2022, inclusive)

11:59 pm on February 15, 2023 for UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS (UMBC Undergraduates who plan to complete their Bachelor's degree at UMBC between January 2023 and May 2024, inclusive)

Re-Applicants - meaning, those who participated in a previous HPEC Cohort past the point where an HPEC Committee Letter was submitted to Medical or Dental School on their behalf - have an extended period of time to join the upcoming Cohort. This later deadline is designed to give applicants who are awaiting decisions from the current (2022-2023) application cycle additional time to decide to join the next immediate Cohort once their admission status at all of the schools they have applied to has become clearer. Please remember that you can only receive an HPEC Committee letter on your first and/or second time applying to professional school (maximum of two times), so make sure that you have addressed (and improved) the weaker aspects of your applicant profile before making another attempt. Some re-applicants choose to wait a year (or more) between application cycles. Potential Re-Applicants should see the website linked below for more details.

As in the past, additional action beyond the expression of interest will be required to officially join the Cohort.

A link to information about next steps is included in the Interest Form's submission confirmation screen. This link will also be sent via email to those who have submitted their interest form, distributed in batches approximately once per week through the interest submission deadlines.

Campus Race to Zero Waste 2023

<Tagline>Competition begins on Sunday, January 29!</Tagline>

About Campus Race to Zero Waste

The Campus Race to Zero Waste is a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities. Over an 8-week period each spring, colleges across the United States and Canada report the amount of recycling and trash collected each week and are in turn ranked in various categories based on who recycles the most on a per capita basis, as well as which schools have the best recycling rate as a percentage of total waste and which schools generate the least amount of combined trash and recycling. With each week’s updated ranking, participating schools follow their performance against other colleges and use the results to rally their campus to reduce and recycle more.

National recognition is provided to the winning school in each category on the website and in a national press release. Winning schools receive an award made out of recyclable materials, and win the right to host that category’s special traveling trophy for the coming year.

RecycleMania, Inc. governs all aspects of the program including the rules and structure of the competition. National Wildlife Federation is the manager of the Campus Race to Zero Waste Program, and works in partnership with RecycleMania, Inc.

U.S. News ranks UMBC’s online master’s in information systems among best in the nation

U.S. News and World Report has recognized UMBC’s online master’s degree in information systems as #41 on their national list of 2023 Best Online Master’s in Information Technology Programs, as well as #20 for veterans.

The U.S. News rankings, released today, evaluate programs based on qualities such as strong faculty credentials, a good reputation among peer institutions, and the opportunity for students to use diverse online learning tools and engage with their instructors and classmates.

Michael Brown, graduate program director for UMBC’s online information system master’s program, says its wide range of electives, as well as free textbooks and course material, distinguish it from similar programs at other institutions.

The program offers a foundations course for people who do not have degrees or experience in technology fields, as well as four career-specific tracks that allow students to specialize in high-demand areas such as artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. The large number of available electives allows students to further customize their learning, Brown says.

Career opportunities

Graduates of UMBC’s online master’s program in information systems regularly land jobs as cybersecurity specialists, data analysts, systems administrators, and more.

Simbiat Odeshina, a master’s degree student in information systems, is currently enrolled in the program while also working as an associate software tester at Wabtec. “I really enjoy the flexibility with the program. Since I work full-time, I really like being able to attend class after work,” she says. Since beginning the program, she shares, “I am thinking about ways to improve how I approach certain things at my job.”

This ranking follows UMBC’s recognition as #9 in the nation for undergraduate teaching and #10 in the nation for innovation in the 2022–23 U.S. News and World Report Best Colleges undergraduate rankings released last September.
