The Congressional District Health Dashboard is a new online tool that provides first-of-its-kind critical health and social data for all 435 congressional districts across the country.

The Dashboard incorporates 36 key measures of health, such as deaths from cardiovascular disease and breast cancer, along with conditions that affect health, like housing affordability and access to nutritious foods. Until now, most of these data were not available at the congressional district level, nor were they compiled in a single location or easily available to the public.

Join us to explore the Dashboard and its innovative features, and dig into key findings related to child poverty, maternal health, and racial and economic disparities in health:

Developed by the Department of Population Health at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, in partnership with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Congressional District Health Dashboard is a one-stop resource of trusted, nonpartisan data at the congressional district level to support policies that allow everyone the opportunity for good health and wellbeing.

*Important Reminder* Time Entry Reports for PR2023016

Good Afternoon and Happy Friday,
Those of you who have been designated as payroll preparers and payroll approvers have started receiving notifications from PeopleSoft when HR reaches certain milestones in their process of making time entry available for processing, such as the burst reports becoming available.

The Burst Report notification alerts the payroll preparer that the Time Entry reports are now available for download in PeopleSoft, which is one of the first steps in the Time Entry process.

As a reminder AAOU SSC departments will disregard these notifications for PR-016 and PR-017 as AAOU SSC is still processing Time Entry through PR-017 to align with the final period in which we processed paperwork.

Departments will need to begin reviewing these notifications and downloading the required reports beginning with PR-018 Time Entry which will be on Monday, February 20, 2023.

While Time Entry may open early some pay periods, HR will send a notification to indicate by when Time Entry approval is due in PeopleSoft, and Payroll Preparers and Approvers should take heed of that deadline to ensure they are able to process and approve Time Entry ahead of it.

Again, this will not be the departments responsibility until PR-018 Time Entry on 2/20/23.

If you have any questions, please feel free to submit a General Inquiry ticket, and we will be happy to provide clarification.

Have a great weekend,

Dr. Robert Deluty Publishes his 65th Book

Dr. Robert Deluty, associate dean emeritus of the Graduate School, has published a new book of poetry, "Watching, Listening." In his review, Dr. George Northrup writes, "In the inexhaustible senryu factory of Robert Deluty’s mind, supply chains are never the problem. There is always abundant material on hand for yet another wry and expertly crafted survey of the human condition. He sprinkles creativity on every page with rollicking abandon, wide-ranging intelligence, keen empathy for the endless variations of human confusion, and the hilarious yet compassionate perspective we have grown to admire. It is no accident that his poems arise in the context of our connections to others—to quirky relatives of every stripe and to the adorable world of children’s innocent questions and observations. At the outset, an epigraph from Carl Rogers is followed by a Deluty senryu noting that the letters in the word poetry can be extracted from the word poverty, reminding us that joy and its devoted companion, humor, don’t depend on finding a more suitable planet than the troubled one we inhabit. Embracing our brokenness, tears, and even suicide notes, Deluty once again points the way to a jubilant transcendence."

And in his appraisal of the book, Dr. Robert Epstein notes, "If the Japanese poet Senryu hadn’t created the form named after him a few hundred years ago, we would be calling these light-hearted, satirical poems Delutyu today. Why? Because, with sixty-five books to his name, Robert Deluty has mastered the short form poetry that exposes our human foibles to the world with exceptional perceptivity. In Watching, Listening, Deluty brings to bear his powers of observation in poems that hold a mirror up to our self-preoccupation, prejudices, blind spots and much more. Sit back and enjoy a hilarious and poignant comedy routine."

"Watching, Listening" may be purchased at selected bookstores in the Baltimore/DC area or may be ordered by emailing Dr. Deluty at <deluty@umbc.edu>.

Safety and Remediation Updates

Dear UMBC Community,

As you know, teams are actively repairing damage to buildings across campus from water line breaks, caused by a power outage coupled with record low temperatures, over the winter break. We are writing to update the community on the measures we are taking to ensure that buildings are safe for community members as they reopen.

Water extraction and drying efforts began immediately after the water line breaks were contained.

Environmental Safety and Health, in partnership with an industrial hygienist, evaluated these areas to ensure that there was not remaining moisture that might spur mold growth.

Professional water remediation contractors are in the process of removing and replacing any affected walls that retained moisture.

As this work is completed and before spaces and buildings reopen, each space will receive a final cleaning.

All HVAC filters in air handling units in affected spaces will also be changed after construction is complete and regularly thereafter.

Our team is following all industry best practices to make sure that spaces are free of mold, dust, and other health challenges before they can be occupied. Every effort is being made to restore all campus spaces back to their previous conditions before the events occurred.

At this time, the Administration Building, Biological Sciences, and Schwartz Hall remain closed. Once remediation efforts have been completed and fire alarm and other safety systems are operational, we anticipate these buildings will partially reopen. However, we expect continued repairs will make it impossible to fully reopen these buildings for some time. We are working closely with building occupants to understand the immediate effect on research, staff work, and upcoming classes and to make alternative arrangements as necessary. When we have a clear reopening timeline, we will share that with the campus community.

We appreciate your support and patience as we make these repairs.

Spring Event Update

<Tagline>25live event processing</Tagline>

We look forward to a new semester and we continue to improve and enhance our processes to fit the needs of our campus. We are making an update to our scheduling process which you may see as we move into the spring semester. Moving forward, we will be adding a new tool to our toolkit to better address 25live requests and help schedulers effectively communicate their needs when requesting space. We will begin using the “denied” event state for requests when we receive:

Requests with inadequate turnaround time or outside reasonable planning parameters

Events proposed in an unsuitable location

Lack of information in the request which makes evaluation of the needs of the request uncertain

Please keep in mind that a denial is not a judgment on your proposed request. We are using it as an opportunity to obtain clear and relevant information to better assist you moving forward with your goals.

If an event request is denied, a member of the events team will reach out with advice as to how to resubmit with the proper information. You can always reach out to the Event & Conference Services team at 5-3615 or at schedule@umbc.edu for assistance.
