UMBC names new director of GESTAR II

After a national search, UMBC has selected a new director of the Goddard Earth Sciences Technology and Research (GESTAR) Center II. In fall 2021, NASA awarded $72 million to establish the new GESTAR II center for an initial three years. UMBC leads the center, which includes over 120 researchers, in collaboration with primary partner Morgan State University and six other institutions.

Charles Ichoku, professor of Earth and environmental sciences at Howard University and the Distinguished Scientist of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Science Center, will take the helm as director on February 1, 2023. He succeeds inaugural director Belay Demoz, professor of physics, who will continue in his departmental role and who previously served as director of the Joint Center for Earth Systems Technology (JCET). JCET preceded GESTAR II, and was last funded in 2015 for $46 million over five years. Ichoku will also have an appointment at UMBC as professor of geography and environmental systems.

"Dr. Ichoku brings impressive credentials, not only as a world-class scientist, but also as a long-term NASA-based scientist and program manager, to this important leadership position at UMBC. He is a perfect fit for both GESTAR II and UMBC," shares Karl V. Steiner, Vice President for Research & Creative Achievement at UMBC. Prior to Ichoku's current position at Howard University, he spent two decades at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, including two years as an associate program manager at NASA Headquarters. His final title at NASA Goddard was assistant chief of the Climate and Radiation Laboratory.

Ichoku has also consistently prioritized supporting students, with a focus on diversity and inclusion. He served as co-PI for the NASA-funded Student Airborne Science Activation (SaSa) project, involving three NASA centers and six minority-serving Institutions (MSIs), including UMBC. This past summer, 24 students, including four from UMBC, spent four weeks at UMBC as part of the SaSa program.

"I am delighted to join UMBC as the new director of GESTAR II," Ichoku states. "It is both a great pleasure and an honor for me, as I have always admired UMBC for being a shining example in all areas of university performance, including education, scholarship, research, innovation, technology, diversity, sports, environmental sustainability, and community outreach. I am proud of UMBC for attaining the status of Carnegie R1 Doctoral Institution."

Ichoku adds: "It is also a great blessing to have this wonderful opportunity to contribute to scientific discoveries and knowledge expansion for human advancement through NASA, and, in particular, Goddard Space Flight Center. I previously spent two decades at NASA Goddard and enjoyed every day of working there. I feel highly privileged to be involved in a program that connects two of the organizations that perform at the highest levels in their respective domains of activity, namely academia (UMBC) and space (NASA)."

Intern of the Week: Rawdah Ahmed

<Tagline>Check out Rawdah's Financial Analyst Internship</Tagline>

Name: Rawdah Ahmed

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site: Textron Systems

Position Title: Financial Analyst

Major or Program: Political Science

Current Class Level: Senior

Work Term: Spring 2022, Summer 2022, Fall 2022

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

As a financial analyst co-op, I work with other analysts on the "manned & unmanned systems" financial teams at Textron Systems in Hunt Valley, MD. Some of my daily responsibilities include administering weekly financial reports based on labor and material "actuals" data, amend budget forecasts to properly represent how the company was fairing financially, analyze trends within the production and sale of products, and presenting all of this corroborated information to executives & managers to ultimately aid them in making decisions to promote growth and mitigate risk to the company's future financial health.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I applied to this position on-line, using UMBCworks after I saw it pop up on me "recommended" home page. I completed a phone interview with a recruiter and then interviewed with the directors of finance at the company before being offered the position & ultimately accepting.

Which of the following resources did you use to find your current experience?

UMBCworks, LinkedIn or Other Social Media

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

I have enjoyed all the experience I have gained working in the office with the finance team and the ability Textron gave me to continue pursuing my Bachelor's and also develop skills that would help me advance. Working side-by-side with people who are veterans at the company has allowed me to quickly develop the technical skills needed for many financial roles, as well as the personal confidence in my analysis to be able to interpret trends and make suggestions to the team and my managers regarding financial matters in the company. It has also allowed me to drastically expand my networking and interpersonal skills as the company is part of a large, cross-country organization and allows lots of opportunity for the interaction of different branches.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I believe I have opened the door for more co-ops and interns to join the team in the future, and primed the current team to working with someone who is in college/still in the stages of developing their career. While I was being trained on the various reports that need weekly/monthly administration, I created clear and easy-to-follow process guides (for myself to reference) that will hopefully help any other new analysts joining the company to easily move through their training process.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Reach out to recruiters at the company to which you've applied using social media liked LinkedIn (if their contact information/email is not readily available using a google search/ on the job database).

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

It felt really great to not only be compensated for my position through monetary means, but also be able to receive credit for the work that I have done; it is always a challenge to balance working everyday and attending classes throughout the year while putting your best foot forward in both ventures. To have the opportunity to submit my co-op for class credit has allowed me to satisfy my graduation requirements & set me up to graduate early for my class, this fall 2022.

If you're not already a Shabbat leader and would like to be, or would like to find a partner to apply with, please email Aliza at asilverman@umbc.edu

"The Hadar Campus Minyan Fellowship is designed for college students looking to build or strengthen campus egalitarian minyanim, and connect with other student leaders looking to do the same. Participants in the fellowship will build skills in minyan leadership such as minyan visioning, marketing, gabba'ut, strategic planning, and community leadership. The fellowship also provides a venue for campus minyan leaders to share their challenges and successes with colleagues from other colleges in order to learn from and provide guidance to each other.

The Hadar Campus Minyan Fellowship is open to college students with a projected graduation year of 2024 or later (current Freshman-Juniors). The ideal applicant is a current or rising leader of a college minyan, as well as students who are hoping to create this type of minyan on their campus. For our 2023 pilot year, we encourage students to apply in pairs with another student from their campus, though applications from students on a campus without another student partner will be considered. "

The fellowship will meet bi-weekly on Wednesdays via zoom, 8:30-9:30 PM ET. A $250 stipend is awarded upon completion of the fellowship. Applications are due Friday, January 20th
