UMBC graduates ready to embark on a bright future

Temperatures may have been cold, but the Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena was warmed by the cheers of congratulations for this year’s graduates. More than 800 undergraduate and graduate students turned their tassels this week during UMBC’s 79th Commencement Ceremonies.

Border around photo says "UMBC Commencement. Winter 22"' style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;">

This was a week of firsts, with President Sheares Ashby presiding over her first commencement and alumni speakers returning for the first time to offer words of wisdom during winter exercises.

President Valerie Sheares Ashby pauses to take in her first UMBC Commencement. (Marlayna Demond ’11/UMBC)

While some elements are new, this year’s ceremonies still had all the trappings that make UMBC’s commencement so special – hugs between classmates, whispered words of gratitude to mentors and colleagues, and misty eyes turned upwards as confetti made the Arena into a verifiable snow globe.

A UMBC graduate stops for a quick hug. (Marlayna Demond ’11/UMBC)

Sheares Ashby acknowledged the milestone and underscored the importance of those who got our Retrievers across the finish line, such as parents, families, and others.

We’re also big fans of Alex’s cheering section! (Marlayna Demond ’11/UMBC)

“This is an extraordinary moment and we owe a lot of gratitude to those of you who are sitting here in the audience,” says Sheares Ashby.

Tales from the heart

Stories, more than anything, were at the heart of this year’s commencement. Graduate commencement speaker Mustafa Al-Adhami, M.S. ’15, Ph.D. ’20, mechanical engineering, accomplished remarkable things during his master’s and doctoral journey at UMBC. But he took care in his speech to share how his background foundation helped forge his future.

“Growing up in Baghdad, my life was a series of changes that I could do little to control,” he said. “Following the 2003 war, we no longer had reliable access to meat, electricity, or entertainment. I had to find new ways to pass my time and earn some pocket money, and I found the answer in fixing radios.”

Al-Adhami addresses the sea of master’s and Ph.D. students. (Marlayna Demond ’11/UMBC)

Al-Adhami’s early penchant for problem solving led him to his position of Chief Executive Officer of Astek Diagnostics, a company he founded, dedicated to developing low-cost solutions for global public health problems.

Undergraduate speaker Stefanie Mavronis ’12, political science and media and communication studies, shared that growing up in a working class neighborhood, she didn’t have much exposure to the world of higher education. But through support from mentors, she was given opportunities that allowed her to envision a career and a future.

Beyond honored to deliver the commencement address at my alma mater @UMBC tomorrow.

My reaction when I received President Sheares Ashby’s call to invite me to speak: “Are you serious???”

Congratulations Winter 2022 graduates! You should all be very proud.

Reaching out for help just got a little simpler

<Tagline>Learn more about the new 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline</Tagline>

Let's be honest, talking about suicide isn't always an easy conversation for some people to have. Often times, people can become visibly uncomfortable just at the mention of the word "suicide." There are lots of people who don't feel comfortable telling others that they feel distressed or are experiencing a crisis.

Breaking the stigma

When we don't discuss topics like suicide and emotional crisis, people might not reach out for help when they need it the most. For persons who have had suicidal thoughts, they might feel shame or stigma. For people who are experiencing emotional crises, they might feel like they are alone.

It's time we start shifting our conversations and saying, "It's okay to talk about suicide" and to say, "I need help." It's not just okay to talk to about suicide and say you need help, it's also okay to reach out and get help.
Action Item: Submit & Approve Time Sheets for PR14 by 1/5/23

<Tagline>Don't Miss Year-End Timesheet Approvals</Tagline>

Happy Holidays to All!

Please read and share the important information below.

The time sheet for pay period 2022-14 (ending 12/31/2022) is the last time
sheet that will be processed for calendar year 2022. PR14 timesheet
submissions and approvals are due by 11:59 pm on January 5, 2023.

Below are helpful
factors that should be shared with supervisors and leave eligible employees. Based on audit compliance, the earliest that a time sheet approver may approve a time sheet for this period is January 1, 2023 (approvers cannot approve a time sheet before the pay period has ended).

    To ensure that all leave
is recorded and processed correctly for the 2022 calendar year, it is
imperative that time sheets (pay period 14 and prior) are submitted
and approved by Thursday, January 5, 2023. These time sheets
must be processed in time entry for PR15. Timesheet approvers may need to check their timesheet approval portal more than once to per day to ensure they have reviewed submitted timesheets pending approval.

    IMPACT: Processing late time
sheets after PR15 time entry, for leave eligible employees,
will result in leave reductions from the 2022 leave and post inaccurate
    balances.

Starting with the time
sheet for pay period 16 (1/15/2023 thru 1/28/2023) and until
the year-end leave process occurs, employees will notice the personal leave
balance will reflect the unused personal hours from 2022 in addition to the
hours for 2023. Any personal leave hours used or processed in the
system after December 31, 2022 (ie. late time sheets or excess usage)
will be deducted from the 2023 personal leave balance.

Maximum annual leave
carryover into 2023, for full-time employees, is 400 hours. Carryover hours are
    pro-rated for part-time employees.

Supervisors should
submit a Holiday Leave Carryover Exception Request Form (https://umbc.box.com/HolLeaveCarryoverExceptionPDF)
for any employee approved to carry over unused holiday leave into calendar year
2023. The form must be signed by the Department Head and emailed to my
attention for review and processing. Recommendation: Submit the waiver forms
after January 6 to get an accurate account of the holiday(s) to carry into
    2023.

Employees will notice
updated leave balances, inclusive of processed year-end figures, on the time
sheet for pay period 17 (ending 2/11/2023).

Payroll Preparers will
be able to run the detailed leave report (use pay run id 2023016) to review
leave data inclusive of year-end processing.

    Helpful notes: The
steps for year-end leave processing are as follows:

(1) Roll back excess annual and unused personal leave from 2022;

(2) Deduct
    leave used reported on time sheet 15 and prior late ETS;

(3) Add the leave accrual earned for
    PR15;

(4) Process manual adjustments entered by HR; and

    (5) Calculate new
ending leave balances for the period ending PR15 (ending 1/14/2023).

questions, please contact me at mcnamara@umbc.edu. I wish everyone a safe and relaxing holiday and break.
