The information regarding the process of joining the Health Professions Evaluation Committee Fall 2024 Cohort has been updated. Students and alumni who plan to apply to Medical or Dental School in the 2023-2024 Application Cycle with a Committee Letter from UMBC Health Professions Evaluation Committee should follow the link below to that location on the PreMedical and PreDental Advising Office web site.
If you navigate to the PreMedical and PreDental Advising Office's
main page, you will find the link to the HPEC 2024 Cohort information under the "Apply" section, in the "Committee Letter" sub-section.
As in the past, additional action beyond the expression of interest will be required to officially join the Cohort. Information about next steps will be sent to students and alumni who have submitted their interest form on a rolling basis, beginning in January.

2023 McNair Scholar Nominations
Are you interested in being nominated for the UMBC McNair Scholars Program?
The program focuses on the preparation of undergraduate students (who qualify as either low-income/first-generation college students or members of groups underrepresented in graduate education) to pursue doctoral degrees.
The program offers a number of benefits, such as summer and academic year research funding, assistance connecting with faculty research mentors, hands-on guidance and navigation through the graduate school application process, first-hand exposure to individuals who have earned Ph.D.'s in their field of study, and the opportunity to attend research conferences (fully funded).

Building Hours 12/19 - 12/21
All,
We have several late evening exams going on this week and while I was changing the building hours, I thought I would lock down the building on Thursday in anticipation of the winter break.
The building will be open until 10:30 PM tonight through Wednesday to accommodate final exams. Starting Thursday December 22nd through Monday January 2nd, the building will be accessed by card reader only.
Please make a note of it and please remember to keep your Campus ID card with you.

Commencement Ceremonies Wednesday and Thursday
Plan Ahead for Increased Traffic/Parking Demands on Campus
UMBC will be hosting two commencement ceremonies this week. The Graduate School Commencement will be held on Wednesday at 10 AM. and the Undergraduate Commencement will be held on Thursday at 10 AM. Both events will be at the Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena.
Please consider alternate parking locations if you typically park near the Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena. Parking around the arena will be open to those attending commencement and will be more congested than normal. Faculty, staff and students can expect heavier than normal traffic both days.

Survey on Waste, Climate Change, and Environmental Justice

"My thesis project is on waste, climate change and environmental justice. I was wondering if you would be willing to help distribute my survey for me? I am hoping to get input from other departments. I have attached a link
here. It is only meant for UMBC students. I am hoping to get as many responses as possible, but would be ending the survey collection on the 23rd of December."
Boren Scholarship Information
The Boren Scholarship, an initiative of the Defense Language and National Security Education Office, funds U.S. citizen undergraduates to study languages and cultures deemed critical to U.S. national security. Awards of up to $25,000 are available for programs lasting six months or longer. STEM students are eligible to apply for summer language study awards of up to $8000.
Students can apply this money for studying Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Hindi and other Asian languages throughout the continent for summer, semester and academic year programs at universities. Special programs include the South Asian Flagship Languages Initiative for the study of Hindi/Urdu, as well as the Indonesian Flagship Language Initiative for study of Indonesian.
