Date and Time: Thursday, November 10, 2022 at 11:00am

Join us via Teams.

Abstract:

The Arctic is experiencing the most dramatic environmental changes. Manifestations of such changes are the loss of perennial ice and the formation of thinner, seasonal ice. Such changes are causing a wide range of impacts and feedbacks on regional climate and chemical cycles, including greater amounts of water vapor transport from winter--time leads to the overlying atmospheric boundary layer. Changes in sea ice impact the chemistry and the chemical composition of the lower atmosphere as well as aerosol physical and chemical composition. Therefore, this presentation will describe the features of field campaigns to advance knowledge of emissions, transport, and chemistry of halogens such as chlorine, bromine, and iodine above the snowpack on the tundra near Utqiagvik, Alaska. Field campaigns took place during the last ten years and provided key data sets to assess the influences of atmospheric thermodynamics and turbulence on halogen chemistry and thus estimate the impacts of halogens on the composition of the Arctic boundary layer. Air turbulence and chemistry measurements were made on fixed flux towers above the frozen tundra and on aircrafts.

Biographies:

Dr. Jose D. Fuentes is a Professor of Atmospheric Science at the Pennsylvania State University where he teaches undergraduate- and graduate-level courses in Micrometeorology, Biometeorology, and Air Chemistry. His research focuses on surface-atmosphere interactions related to emissions, turbulent transport, surface deposition, and chemistry of reactive gases and aerosols. Since 2000, he and his students have investigated the role of the snowpack in the emissions and surface deposition of ozone, halogens, mercury, and aerosols. To complete his field studies, he employs flux towers and tethered balloons which have been deployed at several sites in the Arctic. He has also contributed to the development of numerical models to investigate the chemistry of halogens and the aerosol formation in the Arctic atmospheric boundary layer during the springtime. He serves on many advisory boards, including the Committee on Equal Opportunities in Science and Engineering (CEOSE), which is a congressionally mandated advisory committee to the National Science Foundation. As the current chair of CEOSE, he seeks to identify national strategies to broaden the participation of under-represented groups in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Ultra assessments gain two new features in the November update including hot spot questions and pagination. Hot spot questions allow instructors to assess a student's knowledge of visual content, such as the parts of the skeletal structure in the human body. Assessment pagination provides a new way to organize and present related questions and content to students, allowing faculty to easily create robust test pages that focus on content or adapt the test presentation to reduce cognitive load. Pagination is exclusive to Ultra courses.

Additional enhancements to Ultra include:

Course Activity Report: Instructors identify struggling students based on their performance and engagement within a course. The course activity page allows instructors to identify struggling students based on grade or time spent criteria and send a message to the student(s). Instructors can also receive alerts when a student has not accessed their course in a while or if their grade has dropped. The Course Activity Report replaces the Original course's Retention Center.

Image 2: Example of Course Activity Report

Student Grades Overview: This improvement to the Ultra gradebook view per student will now list any accommodations set by the instructor in the course and the student's username. Moreover, in addition to the grades for a particular student, instructors can view a Student Activity report, which shows how often and how long that student spends in their course.

Auto-Save Enhancements for Students: Blackboard further improved how students are informed about connectivity issues. Assessments will detect if a connection is lost. If this happens, students are warned. If the connection is not restored, another warning informs the student that their most recent progress is not saved. When the connection is restored, the system alerts the student and confirms that progress is saved. Exclusive to Ultra courses.

Additionally, the November update includes:

Improvements to the gradebook history tool expands data selection while providing increased information within the exported file.

Ultra will save the last view of the gradebook (list or grid) used by the instructor as default.

Faculty who use the Content Collection can now add that type of content directly to their Ultra Documents.

Unread message indicator specifically on courses and organizations where there are messages so it's easier to find that communication.
