Approximately 41% of the state of Maryland’s Asian American population resides in Montgomery County. In Montgomery County, Asian Americans comprise of about 15% of the County’s overall population. A little over 27% of Asian Americans in Montgomery County are 55 years of age and above. Given the large percentage of Asian American older adults, it is important to understand the needs of Asian American older adults and their caregivers. Due to cultural norms, caregivers’ stress in Asian American communities is more complicated. Lack of resources and support for Asian American caregivers adds to the stress and burnout. Please join us for a discussion about this topic and learn how to support Asian American caregivers.

Learning objectives:

1. Brief information about the Asian American Health Initiative (AAHI), MCDHHS

2. Local Asian American population demographics

3. Cultural expectations around caregiving in Asian American communities

New article published by Ph.D. grad Brian Uthe & Matt Pelton

UMBC physics Ph.D. graduate Brian Uthe, his Ph.D. advisor Matthew Pelton, and their collaborator John Sader (currently at CalTech) recently published a review of work by their group and others about the use of vibrating nanoparticle to measure the unusual fluid dynamics that occurs even in simple liquids at picosecond time scales and nanometer length scales.

An overview of the research for a broad audience is available at https://funsizephysics.com/when-youre-small-liquids-behave-like-slippery-solids/

B. Uthe, J. E. Sader, and M. Pelton, “Optical measurement of the picosecond fluid mechanics generated by vibrating nanoparticles: A review,” Rep. Prog. Phys. 85, 103001 (2022).
Abstract: Standard continuum assumptions commonly used to describe the fluid mechanics of simple liquids have the potential to break down when considering flows at the nanometer scale. Two common assumptions for simple molecular liquids are that (1) they exhibit a Newtonian response, where the viscosity uniquely specifies the linear relationship between the stress and strain rate, and (2) the liquid moves in tandem with the solid at any solid–liquid interface, known as the no-slip condition. However, even simple molecular liquids can exhibit a non-Newtonian, viscoelastic response at the picosecond time scales that are characteristic of the motion of many nanoscale objects; this viscoelasticity arises because these time scales can be comparable to those of molecular relaxation in the liquid. In addition, even liquids that wet solid surfaces can exhibit nanometer-scale slip at those surfaces. It has recently become possible to interrogate the viscoelastic response of simple liquids and associated nanoscale slip using optical measurements of the mechanical vibrations of metal nanoparticles. Plasmon resonances in metal nanoparticles provide strong optical signals that can be accessed by several spectroscopies, most notably ultrafast transient-absorption spectroscopy. These spectroscopies have been used to measure the frequency and damping rate of acoustic oscillations in the nanoparticles, providing quantitative information about mechanical coupling and exchange of mechanical energy between the solid particle and its surrounding liquid. This information, in turn, has been used to elucidate the rheology of viscoelastic simple liquids at the nanoscale in terms of their constitutive relations, taking into account separate viscoelastic responses for both shear and compressible flows. The nanoparticle vibrations have also been used to provide quantitative measurements of slip lengths on the single-nanometer scale. Viscoelasticity has been shown to amplify nanoscale slip, illustrating the interplay between different aspects of the unconventional fluid dynamics of simple liquids at nanometer length scales and picosecond time scales.

Networking: Building relationships to advance your career

We often hear that "networking" is an essential part of
starting and growing a career, but it can be hard to know where to start. With
both in-person and virtual options it can all feel overwhelming!

For insights into how to develop and grow your professional network, join Assistant Director for Career Development,
    Stephanie Taylor, today, Tuesday,
October 25th from 12:00-1:00pm for the virtual Keys to
Success: "The Circle: Building Relationships that Advance Your Career" session. For more information, click here.

In preparation for this session, we wanted to share the top 5 questions that we receive related
    to networking below:

    "What
exactly IS networking?" This is a good question! Network is the process of
making personal and professional connections that evolve into mutually
beneficial relationships over time. Contacts made through networking can often
provide referrals to others who can provide job information or leads.

    "Why
should I invest time in networking?" Yes, time is a precious commodity and
we want to be sure to use it wisely. Establishing a network of professional
contacts can give you the inside scoop about a position or company, provide a
space to exchange ideas, help you grow your self-confidence, and develop a
support network built on long-lasting relationships. All of these can help you
save time in the long run when you are looking for that next perfect
    opportunity.

    "Ok, I'm
convinced. But how exactly do I network?" Starting with your existing
circle of contacts - family, friends, neighbors, classmates, professors, etc... - is a great way ease into networking. Engaging them in career-focused
conversation can lead to interesting information and new discoveries. You may
also want to reach out to UMBC alumni in careers of interest through the UMBC
alumni group on LinkedIn. Events on campus such as Career Fairs, Career Corners and Employer Information Sessions provide awesome opportunities to grow your network in areas of interest.

    "So, once
I've contacted them, what do I say?" You can start by asking your contact
about their career journey or perhaps what they like best about their current
role. Engaging someone in an informational interview is a low pressure way to
gain information on an industry, company, or job. These short conversations
typically last around 20 minutes and can give you insights into a possible
career path before you invest your precious time, energy, and money. Retrievers
Connect is a great way to set up these
informal conversations that can also help you to build communication skills and
practice interviewing. Everyone on this platform has an existing connection to UMBC
and are happy to connect with fellow Retrievers. Joining campus organizations
and professional organizations connected to your major provide a space
to start conversations with people with shared interests.

    "I just
had the greatest conversation! So, now what do I do?" Follow-up is an
important part to strengthen the relationship with a contact you have just met.
Keeping in touch - even just to say Hi! - keeps the relationship warm and can make
it easier if you need to ask for something, like a recommendation, in the
future. Continue to cultivate your network through reaching out to new contacts - either in-person or online through LinkedIn or Retrievers Connect!
