IS-GEO and iHARP are pleased to announce a virtual workshop on
Model-based Reasoning. Invited expert, Dr. Deana Pennington from the
University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) brings prior expertise in
evaluating social learning and model-based reasoning together with clear
guidance for successful transdisciplinary team building.

Model-based reasoning uses mental models, simulation models, and
everything in between to understand how researchers can collaboratively
integrate their subject matter expertise of problems and generate
combined knowledge from their different perspectives.

initiatives to address climate change. For example, the Biden
administration has made it a central priority for all federal agencies
resulting in initiatives for reducing greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions
(e.g., electric vehicles), absorbing GHG (e.g., forests), increasing
resilience (sea level rise, forest fires, extreme cold/hot weather),
etc. This panel will bring together thought leaders in academia,
industry and government to explore climate-smart computing opportunities
by addressing questions such as the following:

What is climate-smart computing? What may it help understand,
mitigate, and adapt to climate change? How may we reduce computing’s
    carbon footprint?

What are computing research success stories in this area?

What are major computing opportunities in this area?

How may new computing researchers get involved?

What are key research infrastructures (e.g., datasets, cyberinfrastructure, funding)?

Is there a need for computing research community action? If so, recommend

Register, Plan, and Pledge to Vote in Election 2022

<Tagline>Important Voting Info + Make UMBC #1 in Pledges</Tagline>

UMBC has a strong tradition of very active participation in state and national elections, with exceptional student turnout. This year, Marylanders will elect a new governor as well as new state and federal legislators. The general election will take place on November 8. You will be able to cast your vote on the UMBC campus by requesting a mail ballot and depositing the completed ballot in the dropoff box that will be located in The Commons from late September through early November.

Use these resources to prepare for Election 2022:

Register to vote in Maryland: Maryland's voter registration deadline for the 2022 general election is October 18. UMBC's voter registration portal will help you take the first steps to registering to vote regardless of where you live. If you are a Maryland resident, you also can go straight to the state's online portal.

Request a mail ballot, then vote in The Commons: Registered Maryland voters can complete an online request for a mail-in ballot here. Once you have received and completed your ballot, you can submit it by placing it in the official Board of Elections dropoff box in the lobby of The Commons (near the Campus Information Center desk) starting later this month. No postage is necessary. The Board of Elections will pick up ballots placed in the box daily.

Make a pledge to vote: Every election year, ALL IN to Vote hosts a Pledge to Vote leaderboard for university students across the country. UMBC placed #9 in the nation on the leaderboard in 2020. This year, let's reach #1! Take the pledge, and spread the word.

Access Maryland and out-of-state voter resources: Find the latest information, including dates for early voting and deadlines to request mailed and electronic ballots, on the UMBC Center for Democracy and Civic Life website.

Serve as election judge: The Baltimore County Board of Elections is recruiting election judges to work at polling stations during the 2022 general election. These are paid positions and an important public service.
