Founder’s Day Quiz – Take a Spin Through Retriever History

Founded in 1966, UMBC has changed immensely over the years, evolving from a small regional campus to a nationally distinguished research university in a relatively short time. One thing that hasn’t changed, however, is the many kinds of Retrievers who have made us what we are today – an innovative and inclusive community like no other.

As we celebrate Founder’s Day 2022 and our 56th fall semester, what could be more appropriate than a fun Retriever history quiz? (Don’t worry, we’re not grading you.)

And if you’re ready to take a really deep dive into UMBC history, take a look at our new timeline, rebuilt with lots of new photos and factoids to please any Retriever Believer.

Let’s see how you do!

How’d you do? We hope you enjoyed this spin through time at UMBC. Happy Founder’s Day!

Representatives Needed for Student Conduct Hearings

<Tagline>Help Student Conduct and Serve on a Judicial Board!</Tagline>

As you may know, we conduct full and formal judicial review hearings for students who request them. A student might request a board hearing if they are charged with something serious, for which the termination of their housing contract or disciplinary suspension/dismissal is a likely outcome. They might also request a hearing if they are refuting the charges and believe they are not responsible for the alleged misconduct.

Our Code of Student Conduct specifies that judicial boards are composed of between 2-4 students and one faculty or staff member. If you have been in a hearing before, you know that our board members are well-trained, thoughtful, and rigorous in their questioning. Although we have many "friends of Student Conduct" that have volunteered to help out in the faculty/staff capacity, I want to avoid repeatedly shoulder-tapping these same folks, if possible.

I'd like to open up this opportunity for others to assist us in this crucial aspect of our operation. This is a chance for you to foster the accountability-taking and ethical decision-making capacity of our students and also to get a "good student affairs experience." Unfortunately, most of the staff in Residential Life have baked-in conflicts that prevent them from serving in this capacity (although the dates listed in italics are dates when Residential Life staff could serve).

Here are the hearing dates and times (ALL VIRTUAL, AT THIS TIME!) that I have lined up thus far for the Fall Semester of 2022 (please consider signing up for the early dates, which are typically the hardest for me to fill):

Friday, September 30, 1:00-6:00 PM

Friday, October 7, 9:00-1:00 PM

Friday, October 14, 1:00-6:00 PM

Friday, October 28, 1:00-6:00 PM

Thursday, November 3, 3:00-5:00 PM (Appellate Board)

Friday, November 4, 9:00-1:00 PM

Friday, November 18, 1:00-6:00 PM

Thursday, December 1, 3:00-5:00 PM (Appellate Board)

Friday, December 2, 1:00-6:00 PM

Friday, December 9, 1:00-6:00 PM

Wednesday, December 14 (Study Day), 10:30 AM-4:00 PM

Here are a few caveats: 1) Before you volunteer, make sure you are in conversation with your supervisor, and 2) Our hearings occasionally run past 5:00 PM, so if you are on a tight timeline because of family or social commitments, just be aware that once you commit it is really important to have you be available "for the duration" whatever that ends up looking like.

With all that said, please consult your calendar and contact Jeff Cullen at jcullen@umbc.edu with the date(s) you are available and willing to help out. I will reply and ask you to put a tentative hold on your calendar and then confirm the specific time and nature of the hearing when we get closer to the actual date. Thanks again for your support of this important task!

Talk: Critical Infrastructure Risk Assessment and Reduction

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) leads the national effort to understand, manage, and reduce risk to our cyber and physical infrastructure. CISA must assess risks that cover a broad range of scenarios over a complex set of interdependent critical infrastructure (CI) systems. While many threat and hazard impact models and data sets exist, there is no overarching analytic structure that organizes and integrates these disparate sources into a unified risk assessment. CISA is building capabilities that will address these challenges to support stakeholders across all levels of government and the private sector.

First, CISA has developed a National Critical Functions (NCFs) data structure to organize and describe critical infrastructure. This data set provides a set of decompositions structured as directed graphs that break down each identified function into enabling sub-functions that detail the operation and interdependencies across disparate CI systems. The functional description of NCFs serves as a complementary lens to the sector-based organization of CI and better facilitates systemic and cross-sector risk analysis.

Additionally, CISA has begun developing the Risk Architecture, a technology-enabled analytic tool that contains a set of standards, scenarios, visualizations, and workflows that leverage the NCF and other integrated CI data sets. This talk describes the need for an integrated approach to CI risk assessment, the NCF decomposition structure, the principles and concepts behind the Risk Architecture, and the approaches to functional interdependency analysis while also providing initial use examples.
