This week, ModernThink’s Great Colleges to Work For program again recognized UMBC as a top institution nationwide in every measured category, from well-being and shared governance to mission and pride. UMBC is the only R1 university in the nation to achieve this honor, which is based on employee ratings.

“I believe we continue to receive this honor because of our commitment to the development and support of our employees,” says Valerie Thomas, UMBC’s chief human resources officer. “The past two years have been difficult for everyone, but we worked tirelessly together to determine how to best serve our students and how best to make changes in the way we work, focused on continuous improvement.”

Caring community

Published in The Chronicle of Higher Education, the Great Colleges to Work For ratings include 10 categories:

Mission & Pride

Job Satisfaction & Support

Confidence in Senior Leadership

Compensation & Benefits

Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging

Shared Governance

Professional Development

Faculty Experience

Faculty & Staff Well-Being

Supervisor/Department Chair Effectiveness

“I am reminded every day of what makes UMBC a great place to work,” says Faculty Senate President Susan McDonough, associate professor of history and vice-chair of the University Steering Committee.

“I have the privilege to work alongside university leaders and colleagues who care deeply about ideas and their impact on society. I have seen us grow and deepen our commitment to research and discovery as we transformed into an R1 university. And I have watched our students, faculty, and staff face innumerable challenges these past few years and meet them with the compassion, tenacity, and imagination that makes me excited and humbled to be part of this community,” says McDonough. “I look forward to working with Dr. Sheares Ashby, our faculty, and our entire community to keep building an even better UMBC.”

Leadership and partnership

This theme of excitement for UMBC’s future with President Sheares Ashby, who began her tenure at UMBC in August, is a common thread among UMBC leadership.

“UMBC encourages staff growth and development, while ensuring equity through their focus on inclusion,” says Desiree Stonesifer, president of UMBC’s Non-exempt Staff Senate and executive administrative assistant in financial services, emphasizing a core value long-shared by UMBC and President Sheares Ashby. “As we welcome our new president, we look forward to the new opportunities for growth and experiences while maintaining our strong sense of UMBC family.”

Jess Wyatt, president of UMBC’s Professional Staff Senate (PSS), chair of the University Steering Committee, and associate director of alumni engagement, notes, “While it’s exciting to see UMBC as a perennial addition to this list, it is even more exciting to see where we will go as we move into a new era of UMBC in partnership with President Sheares Ashby.”

This is UMBC’s 13th year of recognition and 11th year on the Great Colleges Honor Roll.

First official anime meeting tonight!

Hello anime fans!

Welcome back for the fall 2022 semester of the UMBC Anime Society!

Our first official meeting and all following meetings will be Fridays (including today) 6pm-11 in Admin 101 and on the Viewings channel in the Discord Server. (They're hybrid meetings!) This is an important meeting, as it is where we will be introducing the club, our policies, etc, which will happen at the beginning of the meeting. After that, we’ll be watching anime picked by the officers, including a secret movie selection! You do not have to be there the whole time, but we do recommend attending the beginning at least, so you can get that important information.

We will post the scheduled viewing form soon, so keep an eye out for that! For those of you who do not know what our scheduled viewings are or what this form is about, we will explain it during the meeting tonight, so please come and have your questions answered!

Please see the attached map if you don't know where we are meeting!

We hope to see you tonight!

FULLY FUNDED Trip to Foreign Policy Conference Apply Now

<Tagline>73rd Annual Student Conference on US Affairs Apply by 9/23</Tagline>

UMBC has been invited to send one delegate to the 73rd Annual Student Conference on U.S. Affairs (SCUSA), hosted by the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. SCUSA 73 begins on the evening of Wednesday, November 2 and ends noon on Saturday, November 5.

IF YOU ARE SELECTED, YOUR COSTS FOR ATTENDING THIS CONFERENCE WILL BE FULLY COVERED.

TO APPLY: You must send a one- to two-paragraph message to Dr. Grodsky (bgrodsky@umbc.edu) explaining WHY you would be a good representative and your current YEAR/GPA. This must be received by 5pm on September 23.

From the organizers:

We are excited to announce a return to "normal" SCUSA! The largest and oldest conference of its type, SCUSA is an important means through which the United States Military Academy promotes civil-military engagement among future leaders. After a break in 2020 and a reduced SCUSA 72 last year due to the ongoing COVID-19 public health crisis, SCUSA 73 will continue the tradition of developing future professional partnerships while discussing contemporary U.S. foreign policy challenges. The event will maintain our rich history as one of America's premier student conferences, including 60 cadet delegates and 200 undergraduate and graduate students from over 100 U.S. institutions of higher learning as well as international partners, and spanning numerous academic disciplines. Conference highlights include an opening senior panel discussion on the evening of November 2nd, a keynote address and banquet on November 3rd, four roundtable sessions, and a closing session on November 5th at which delegates will present recommendations for U.S. foreign policy developed during their roundtable sessions. Our keynote speaker this year is Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the United States Ambassador to the United Nations.

SCUSA 73's theme is "American Foreign Policy in an Era of Polarized Politics and Revisionist Powers." America faces a mix of emerging and renewed obstacles to crafting effective and legitimate foreign policy. The evolving geopolitical environment increasingly challenges U.S. power and principles abroad. Domestically, American policymakers operate in a politically-charged and culturally-divided landscape, inhibiting compromise and effective policymaking while sometimes calling into question long-standing external commitments. In advancing its interests and values abroad, the United States encounters foreign powers seeking to revise or overturn existing international relationships, transnational institutions and norms, and even state boundaries. As familiar adversaries seek to alter regional balances in Europe and the Middle East, and as the challenge of China gathers momentum, America must act effectively and with lasting purpose to maintain its global leadership. Policymakers will continue to grapple with a challenging question: How should the United States safeguard its values and interests in an era of domestic political polarization and revisionist powers? At the 73rd Annual Class of 1971 Student Conference on U.S. Affairs (SCUSA 73) delegates will evaluate a range of contemporary obstacles and opportunities to craft proposals for an effective and authoritative U.S. foreign policy. SCUSA 73 delegates will collaborate to develop policy proposals for the U.S. government that address the constraints of the domestic political arena and the challenges of a dynamic, uncertain strategic environment.

Daniel Pesca appeared as piano soloist with the Chamber Orchestra of Pittsburgh and conductor Kevin Fitzgerald in a performance of Olivier Messiaen's Des Canyons aux Etoiles on Saturday, September 10th at Chatham University. This was the Pittsburgh premiere of the work, composed in 1974. The piano soloist takes the lead through much of the 90-minute piece, which includes a pair of movements scored for piano alone. "The piano writing is intensely virtuosic, with handfuls of chords all over the keyboard," comments Pesca. "Messiaen was inspired by birdsong, and much of the piano writing imitates its rapid flourishes and pirouettes." The performance also featured percussion soloists Hannah Weaver and Matthew Coley, and horn soloist Mark Houghton.
