Sleep Better, Feel Better

<Tagline>#HealthyUMBC</Tagline>

Are you feeling tired? Going to bed but waking up not feeling rested? Getting only a few hours of sleep? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, keep reading!

With all the excitement and stress that may come with the start of a new school year, having healthy sleep patterns can be easily forgotten.

Sleep is an undervalued aspect of well-being. During the collegiate years, sleep is often rated as a low priority for students, especially around midterms and finals week.

Sleep deprivation, or not getting enough sleep, is a recurring problem for college students, including students at UMBC. A few reasons for sleep deprivation are:

stress

sleep disorders

eating and drinking late at night

consuming too much caffeine, alcohol, and sleep aids

Why is sleep such a big deal? The benefits of getting enough sleep include:

reduced stress levels

improved mood

avoiding accidents or injuries that occur as a result of being sleepy, such as car accidents

improved academic performance

What happens when you don't get enough sleep? Some of the risks associated with not getting enough sleep are:

reduction in academic, athletic, and social performance

increased risk for depression, anxiety, and irritability

increased risk of developing diabetes or cardiovascular disease

increased risk for catching a cold

increased risk for obesity

One way you can improve your sleep is by improving your sleep environment.

Designate your bed for sleep only to signal to your body that when you are in bed, you should be sleeping.

Allow the space where you sleep to be as quiet and comfortable as possible when it is time to sleep.

Turn off all electronic devices at least one hour before it is time to sleep to limit exposure to bright light before bed.

Create a sleep schedule to consistently sleep and wake up at the same time.

Create a wind-down routine, which is a series of actions that signal to your body that you are preparing for sleep.

Examples include taking a shower, brushing your teeth, and stopping the consumption of liquids.

<Tagline>Important Week 2 Updates -- Last week of Schedule Adjustment</Tagline>

Now that we are entering the second week of classes and you have likely attended each of your courses at least once, there are some important updates, deadlines, and reminders to keep in mind.

1.) The CNMS Advising Office will be holding walk-in office hours for advising support Mo-Th 10AM-12PM & 1PM-3PM in UC 205. If you are a new/incoming student please feel free to drop by at any time. Returning students should follow up with their assigned advisor (see here). Advisors can assist with schedule adjustments, registration troubleshooting, and general questions. Walk-in advising support is on a first come, first served basis and may result in a lengthy wait time during busy hours. Scheduled in person and virtual appointments can be arranged via email (CNMSAdvising@umbc.edu).

2.) Tomorrow, September 8th, all course waitlists are purged and deactivated. Be sure to check your schedule to determine whether or not you have gained a seat in your desired courses and ensure that you are registered for a minimum of 12 credits (for full time status) at all times. Be sure to make any/all adjustments to your schedule ASAP.

3.) As a reminder -- The last day of schedule adjustment (i.e. last day to add/drop/swap your classes) is Wednesday, September 14th. Once this deadline passes, all dropped courses will result in a withdraw or "W" on your transcript.

In essence, this week is about checking your schedule and making sure that you are all set for the semester. Be sure to begin assembling a solid study plan for your classes and ask for help well before you need to!

We look forward to helping you make this a successful semester!

Bookstore Discounts/Refunds Turning Clicker "Bundles"

<Tagline>Decision aims to clear pre-pandemic "hardware" inventory</Tagline>

In collaboration with DoIT, UMBC's Bookstore has reduced the price of all clicker "bundles" (hardware + software) to match the direct purchase price for a one year code ($34.99) by Turning Point (now known as Point Solutions following its merger with Echo360 earlier this year). This is being done to facilitate sales of the remaining, pre-pandemic hardware clickers that the Bookstore has in stock.

In addition, students who previously purchased a clicker bundle for $45.00 this semester, can request a refund of $10.00 from the Bookstore to match the new clicker bundle pricing. Students must show a receipt for proof of purchase, and the refund offer expires after Friday, September 30, 2022.

Note: The access code available in a clicker "bundle" can be used either on the hardware device or on a student's mobile device (but the two devices cannot be used at the same time in the same session). For more information, see the following FAQ:

Background

Currently, the Bookstore has 990 clicker bundles in stock and 192 students have already purchased bundles this semester. The Bookstore does not plan to offer software (code only) sales until the current hardware clicker bundle inventory is sold off, but will continue to match the one year Turning/Point Solutions price for all clicker bundles until they are all sold.
