Shenita Denson successfully defends her dissertation!
On August 16, 2022 Shenita Denson of LLC Cohort 22 successfully defended her dissertation and earned the title of Doctor of Philosophy. Her degree will be conferred this fall.

Shenita's virtual defense went very smoothly and she gave an excellent presentation of her dissertation research, "Retrospective Storytelling, Meaning-making, and Generativity (the passing down of wisdom): Black Intergenerational Stories About Love."

So, do you like jazz? There are currently six jazz groups at UMBC, the Jazz Ensemble, four small groups, and the Jazz Guitar Ensemble. The audition is the same for all groups. Non-traditional instruments are welcome. Make music! Make friends! Receive course credit!

Also, we host our own jazz festival every spring. Recent guests include saxophonist Charlie Young, latin jazz drummer Vince Cherico, drummer Allison Miller, bassist Ben Allison, trumpeter Steven Bernstein, bassist Ben Street, pianist Larry Willis, tubist/saxophonist Howard Johnson, and saxophonist George Garzone. In addition to hosting our own festival, our students perform regularly off campus and at other area festivals.

In May 2022, the survey website QuestionPro was the target of an extortion attempt relating to an alleged data breach. Over 100GB of data containing 22 million unique email addresses (some of which appear to be generated by the platform) are alleged to have been extracted from the service, along with IP addresses, browser user agents, and results relating to surveys. QuestionPro would not confirm whether a breach had occurred (although they did confirm they were the target of an extortion attempt), so the data has been flagged as "unverified" and may have been sourced from another location.

Of the accounts listed, approximately 150 UMBC accounts were indicated in this potential breach. The victims are being notified via their UMBC emails. If you have an account with QuestionPro, please contact them to see if you have been affected by this breach.

Here is what he has to say about the internship he completed this summer:

I did my internship at Aronson LLC and I was an audit intern in the employee benefit plans group. So basically auditing 401k plans. I did a lot during the internship.
Aronson does a great job of letting interns get immediate hands-on experience in the audit.  For example in a benefit plan audit, you have to look at employees from the company you are auditing to make sure they are getting the money they put into their 401k and making sure the match that the employer gives is correct. If these numbers are off then these companies get hit with big fines by the Department of Labor. So I would have to look at payroll documents and other things to make sure all the numbers were correct. This is just one of the many things I did during the internship. 
The best skill I learned was how to perform the audits themselves. I had never worked in public accounting or did anything to do with audits so everything was new to me. But I got the hang of it pretty quickly. 
My favorite part was getting to meet all the people working there. Aronson also had a lot of cool events they took us to like a Nats game which was very fun.
