Celebrating Disability Pride in July
Breaking down stigma and being authentically known
Disability Pride Month is celebrated in July each year - and in 2013, Chicago's Disability Pride Parade explained their mission as:
"To change the way people think about and define 'disability,' to break down and end the internalized shame among people with disabilities, and to promote the belief in society that disability is a natural and beautiful part of human diversity in which people living with disability can take pride."
The Disability Pride movement is long-standing, and became more evident as a day of celebration in 1990 - the same year that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) became law. Boston celebrated its first Disability Pride Day that year, however many are also familiar with the earlier 504 disability civil rights movements of the 1970s which is chronicled in
the movie Crip Camp, (
Crip Camp Netflix link,
Crip Camp YouTube link, which highlights the advocacy efforts of
Judy Heumann and
James LeBrecht, among others). This July marks the 32nd anniversary of the ADA, and many cities across the country celebrate disability pride with parades and festivals. Let's work together to support access and inclusion so more people can say it loud, "I'm disabled and I'm proud!"

Recently, the UMBC Division of Information Technology(DoIT) received multiple reports of job phishing emails from a compromised UMBC account. The phishers are pretending to offer an Administrative Assistant job. Below is an example of the email. For privacy purposes, we removed the To field.

We are excited to announce the UMBC Career Center's transition to Handshake, which has become the #1 place employers recruit college students and recent graduates.
This platform is now live and will replace the university's current system, UMBCworks.
There are a number of reasons we are making this change. Below are just a few:
- We expect an increase of 3x the number of internships and full-time postings. More than 550,000 employers, including 100% of the Fortune 500 companies, utilize Handshake to post their open positions.
- You will receive personalized job and internship recommendations, be able to connect with employers and peers working at organizations that interest you, and get an inside look at organizations with thousands of student reviews.
- Handshake's mobile app lets you explore events and positions, review interview schedules, and access resources while on the go!
Be sure to complete your profile on Handshake and upload your resume. Existing users of UMBCworks are encouraged to move any current documents--including resumes and cover letters--to Handshake.
Appointments with a career specialist can also now be made via Handshake.

Career Center Transitions to Handshake
Faculty, staff can now add job listings to our new platform
Dear UMBC Community,
We are excited to announce the Career Center's transition to Handshake, which has become the number one place employers recruit college students and recent graduates. More than 1,400 colleges and universities now partner with Handshake, making it the top platform among career centers across the nation.
This platform is now live and will replace the university's current system, UMBCworks.
There are a number of reasons we are making this change. Below are just a few:
- We will be able to seamlessly connect with new employers that may have otherwise been unreachable. More than 550,000 employers, including 100 percent of the Fortune 500 companies, use Handshake to post their open positions. We expect to triple the number of internships and full-time position postings.
- Students and alumni will receive personalized job and internship recommendations, connect with employers and peers working at organizations that interest them, and get an inside look at organizations with thousands of student reviews.
- Handshake's mobile app lets users explore events and position postings, review interview schedules, and access resources while on the go!
Colleges, divisions, departments, and units across campus are highly encouraged to start posting open student positions for both undergraduate and graduate students as soon as possible. New student enrollment is in full swing and our Retrievers are now logging into Handshake seeking jobs for the upcoming academic year. Please also be sure to update your webpages to reflect this change.
Students have started completing their profiles on Handshake and making appointments with our career specialists. Existing users of UMBCworks are encouraged to move any current documents--including resumes and cover letters--to Handshake.
The Shriver Center and Career Center are also working together to transition enrollment and evaluation processes for applied learning experiences, including internships, co-ops, research, and service-learning, for the start of the fall semester.
Although we still have more to do to make this transition a success, we know it will be the best career management tool for our UMBC community.

Volunteers Needed:Community Mural Project at Arbutus Library
Paint Storm Drains to Bring Awareness of Stormwater Runoff
Hi!
I'm a certified secondary art teacher, Arbutus resident, and UMBC MAE STEM Grad Student.
I am partnering with Baltimore County Public Libraries' Arbutus Branch to facilitate a community art project. Students in local schools (K to 12) are currently designing and planning their designs to paint several storm drains murals at the Arbutus Library Campus (about a 15-20 minute walk from campus or a 5 minute drive). This project goal is to empower local students and their parents through a community art project that brings awareness of environmental threats to the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, such as stormwater runoff. The project also ties in with the library's Summer Reading Program Theme, Oceans of Possibilities.
We need volunteers to support students on painting day, Saturday, August 6th from 8:30AM to 12:30PM. The Rain Date (or date for extra painting time) is Saturday, August 13th from 8:30AM to 12:30PM. Your job duties include making sure students are using the materials safely, helping them transfer their designs to the pavement, helping them with painting, looking for cars, redirecting students to the project at hand/keeping them focused, and clean-up. Water will be provided. Please dress for the weather and dress in lightly colored clothing for high visibility while working in a parking lot. Also be sure to bring a hat/sunglasses, sunscreen, and snacks.
I need 4 volunteers. I thought it would be great to reach out to my fellow UMBC colleagues to see if you would want to help with this project. UMBC Education, visual arts, and STEM students may find this project particularly in their wheelhouse. I have linked my project presentation for more info on the topic/project. If you need transportation, I can come pick you up/drop you off from/at campus (or Arbutus area).
Due to the nature of this project and working with minors, I will be conducting a background check. To apply email Lauren at

This is a SHARED TOWNHOUSE w/3 other renters.
Seeking ONE individual renter for one bedroom in upstairs of townhouse.
(biggest bedroom: 12x13 sized room)
$800/month
1.5 baths, so you will share shower with 3 others, and bathroom with 2
other persons.
(FYI: add'l shower in basement being installed by end of the year 2022)
Seeking working professional or student. No couples or kids, sorry.
Semi-furnished first floor, but open to your furniture if you wish to
bring. Shared kitchen, dining, living room & deck.
BGE (gas, electric) would be split between renters. Typically
$20-65/month (split up)
Verizon would also be split: $40/month for internet and cable.
Water utility and mowing included (no charge to tenants)
1 year lease with auto-renew option available. Husband and wife that
also rent a small property locally in Relay. Not a big "landlord" type
of deal or company - very personable yet experienced.

Writing Accountability Group
Mini summer session
This group discussed creating a writing accountability group during our last spring 22 meeting, and I am gathering interest in a mini session for the remainder of the summer.
Writing accountability groups are typically composed of 4-8 members who commit to attending weekly hour-long sessions. Each session begin with a 15 minute recap of each individuals past-week's work towards their goals (in productivity, not substance), followed by 30 minutes of communal writing, and capped by a recount of the writing period and goals for the next week's productivity. Feedback is not typically shared on the texts being developed, but we could consider that as well. We can meet in person or virtually, depending on the interests of the group.
We have about 6 weeks left of summer if we start next week. I am assuming a morning session later in the week (maybe Fridays) would be good, but we will see what works for those who are interested. Feel free to share with your colleagues!
