Catching up with Stephen Guimond

Stephen Guimond, who has joined GESTAR II from JCET, is a Research Associate Professor with the Physics Department at UMBC and directs the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (GFD) Group here. Dr. Guimond (UMBC/612) recently had a paper published and a proposal selected. He was the second author on an article led by Gennaro D'Angelo of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), "Contrasting stratospheric smoke mass and lifetime from 2017 Canadian and 2019/2020 Australian megafires: Global simulations and satellite observations," published in J. Geophys. Res. - Atmos., https://doi.org/10.1029/2021JD036249.

Dr. Guimond also is part of an NASA AIST proposal that was selected for funding: "GEOS Visualization And Lagrangian dynamics Immersive eXtended Reality Tool (VALIXR) for Scientific Discovery." According to the proposal team, "Traditionally, scientists view and analyze the results of calculated or measured observables with static 1-dimensional (1-D), 2-D or 3-D plots. In this context, it is very difficult to identify, track and understand the evolution of key features due to poor viewing angles and the nature of flat computer screens. In addition, numerical models, such as the NASA Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS) climate/weather model, are almost exclusively formulated and analyzed in an Eulerian reference frame with fixed grid points in space and time. However, Earth Science phenomena, such as convective clouds, hurricanes and wildfire smoke plumes, move with the 3-D flow field in a Lagrangian reference frame, and it is often difficult and unnatural to understand these phenomena with data in an Eulerian context." Dr. Guimond added, "This AIST project, VALIXR, will develop a scientific exploration and analysis mixed augmented and virtual reality tool with integrated Lagrangian Dynamics (LD) to provide more in-depth science with the NASA GEOS model." He will be responsible for portions of the LD tool and understanding the value for wildfire smoke plume science.

The VALIXR proposal team consists of PI: Thomas Grubb GSFC/587), Co-Is: Thomas Clune (GSFC/610.1), Steve Guimond, Matthias Zwicker (UMD), Leslie Lait (SSAI/614), and Ruth West (UNT), plus Collaborators: Roger Eastman (UMD) and Don Engel (UMBC/672).

A Season of Change for the CADVC

For more than 30 years, Symmes Gardner has worked with the Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture (CADVC) at UMBC, and in that time helped transform the gallery into an internationally-recognized hub for art, research, and technology on the UMBC campus.

Gardner retires this month having hosted historic retrospectives of artists like Adrian Piper, Kate Millett, and Fred Wilson, while simultaneously supporting annual student and faculty exhibitions. Notably, every major CADVC exhibition has been accompanied by a catalog designed in collaboration with Visual Arts faculty.
Putting the CADVC on the map

Gardner’s tenure with the CADVC began in 1989, and he took over directorial responsibilities after founding director David Yager left for a position at UC Santa Cruz.

“I feel really fortunate and lucky,” Gardner says. “We had had a good team from the beginning, and were allowed a fair degree of autonomy to investigate and grow.”

(Marlayna Demond ’11/UMBC)

Gardner’s team included the curatorial contributions of Maurice Berger, the influential art historian whose work radically advanced the dialogue about the ways museums and archives dealt with race prior to his death in March 2020. Berger’s numerous contributions to the CADVC included curating For All The World To See: Visual Culture and the Struggle for Civil Rights, which came to the CADVC in 2012-2013 after opening at the Smithsonian, and later traveled around the United States. This legendary exhibition remains available to view via the CADVC website.

“Maurice really challenged us to bring together traveling exhibitions that were incredibly timely,” says Gardner. “That really helped the CADVC and put us on the map, and the university allowed us to conduct ourselves like we’re in a laboratory.”

Under Gardner’s guidance, the CADVC also expanded its reach beyond its gallery walls, including numerous touring exhibitions as well as the Joseph Beuys Sculpture Park, created in 2001 as a tribute to Beuys’ 7000 Oaks project on the south side of the UMBC campus.

At 2017’s Gun Show, artist David Hess presented dozens of life-size sculptures of assault rifles made from what he calls “rescued” objects – ranging from an old black sneaker and vintage turquoise sewing machine, to a raggedy crutch and pink Barbie bike frame – to foster dialogue around gun violence.

Room to grow

Gardner’s departure leaves the CADVC’s legacy in good hands. Rebecca Uchill, an art historian and curator who most recently served as director of community engagement initiatives at UMass Dartmouth, arrives this summer ready to build on an already impressive career.

Last year at UMass Dartmouth, Uchill curated a celebration of the life and work of renowned multimedia artist Nancy Holt, complete with the first posthumous presentation of Holt’s 1982 immersive work Electrical System in the United States and presenting new research into Holt’s 1991 public sculpture Spinwinder.

To recreate Holt’s elaborate Electrical System, the Nancy Holt: Massachusetts team included electrical engineering students who took on the project as a capstone project, bending conduit to showcase the infrastructure of electricity via Holt’s darkened gallery environment.

Uchill worked with the National Park Service in revitalizing Holt’s Spinwindersculpture on the UMass Dartmouth campus through a new tour that connected Holt’s legacy with the Massachusetts textile industry.

“I am interested in what the public presentation of art and visual culture can mean to a university campus environment,” says Uchill. “I think it’s an important part of any academic, interdisciplinary, social, community minded public-facing discussion that work is accessible for a broader general public.”

Previously, Uchill was a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow with the Center for Art, Science & Technology (CAST) at MIT, where she co-edited two publications: Experience: Culture, Cognition, and the Common Sense (2016) and Being Material (2019).

Uchill has curated exhibitions at Harvard University, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, and MASS MoCA. Her publication CV includes serving as editor of Art Journal Open, as well as scholarly publications in Architectural Theory Review, Journal of Art Historiography, and Journal of Curatorial Studies.

“UMBC is a cool, nerdy place, and I really thrive in that kind of environment,” says Uchill. “CADVC is part of that culture, and builds on that research-centered mission, which excites me. I wouldn’t be in the business of working in the arts if I didn’t think that they were the most important tools for reflecting on and understanding what’s happening in the world.”

Dr. Jessica Hammond-Graf Announces Retirement from UMBC

<Tagline>Deputy AD/SWA Served Nearly 19 Years on Hilltop Circle</Tagline>

"Even my own growth as an executive leader is the direct result of experiences at UMBC. Nevertheless, I find myself looking beyond our ecosystem to other ways I can create positive change through sport."

She came to Baltimore in the fall of 2003, after short stints as an academic counselor/advisor at Penn, Tulane and LSU and probably did not envision the career she would carve out on Hilltop Circle. She served as assistant athletics director, academic services for student-athletes until 2014, when she replaced a retiring icon, Kathy Zerrlaut, as senior associate athletics director and senior women's administrator.

UMBC tabbed the 1995 UConn graduate as interim athletics director in the summer of 2019 and she returned to her role as deputy athletics director/SWA when Athletics Director <dfn>Brian Barrio</dfn> came on board in the winter of 2020.

"Jessica has been a steady and professional hand in our department and a wonderful colleague and friend to all of us on the staff," said Barrio. "More than anything, I will miss her consistent and tireless advocacy for our student-athletes as well as her sense of humor. While it is difficult to say good-bye, we are excited for her, and anxious to see what she can accomplish in the next chapter of her career."

During her tenure, Hammond-Graf earned a certificate in instructional systems design (UMBC, 2012) and, in 2017, began work on her doctorate at Frostburg State. She earned her Ed.D. in higher education and leadership in 2021 and her dissertation was entitled "Utilizing Sport as a Vehicle for the Process of Empowerment for Women."

"Despite her rise within the department, Jessica never strayed from our primary mission, which is striving for the best possible care of our student-athletes, while also holding them accountable," said <dfn>Steve Levy</dfn>, '85, associate athletics director, who has worked with Hammond-Graf throughout her tenure. "She also brought wonderful concepts- like The Grittys- to the external side of athletics. I will certainly miss the opportunity to run ideas past her or seek her counsel on the challenges we face in our ever-changing environment."

Hammond-Graf earned recognition for her work on campus and on the conference and national stages. She was honored by the men's lacrosse program, receiving the Dr. Martin Schwartz Award for contributions to the program in 2013, earned the Division of Student Affairs Outstanding Staff Award in 2014 and was awarded the Jakubik Family Endowment Award, UMBC Staff Award in April 2019.

In 2021-22, Hammond-Graf spearheaded UMBC Athletics' comprehensive Title IX/Women In Sports celebration, which included a virtual panel of alumnae and staff, a video series for UMBC social media accounts and a spring athletic events' schedule which highlighted UMBC-connected women's athletes.

"I personally owe Jess for taking a risk on me as a young coach," said Head Women's Lacrosse Coach <dfn>Amy Slade</dfn>. "She believed in me and my vision for what UMBC Lacrosse could become. As we continue to turn a program into a household name, we could not have done it without her support and guidance. I was lucky enough to build a strong working relationship with such a passionate woman. We wish Jess the best of luck and hope she will come back to support the Dawgs! "

Hammond-Graf served on a myriad of America East Conference panels and committees and just completed two years of service on the NCAA Division I Swimming & Diving Committee.

"As I look around my mostly empty office at this stage, I am reminded that the memorabilia, the championships and celebrations do not quantify a career," said Hammond-Graf. "It is the individual connections with student-athletes, coaches, and staff that made UMBC a home for the past 19 years. Who you work with matters, and #RetrieverNation has certainly left an imprint on me. Thank you for an amazing journey."
