We Need to Teach Students How to Implement

<Tagline>Faculty train how to develop ideas but not how to make real</Tagline>

"...To train students in implementation, instructors need to introduce students to stakeholders and teach them how to get stakeholder buy-in as they are developing their ideas. Consider again the problem of global poverty. If students want to learn to make an impact on it, a faculty member can’t accomplish that by delivering lectures. Instead, at the start of the semester, the instructor must intentionally ask students to develop and effectuate ideas to alleviate poverty. They must help students identify stakeholders with whom they can feasibly work—perhaps by partnering with local nonprofits engaged in international aid or using remote work technology to collaborate with international NGOs. Throughout the semester, the instructor should ask students to report on their developing ideas as well as the actions that stakeholders have taken to demonstrate their buy-in, such as investing money to fund microloans. By the end of the semester, the students will have come up with new concepts to address complex societal challenges as well as gotten the stakeholder support they need for those ideas to become reality."
Auto Industry Struggles With Systems Engineering

<Tagline>Reinventing The Wheel</Tagline>

"...The normal Statement of Work (SOW) from an automotive manufacturer contains thousands of detailed requirements, which must be synthesized in weeks to provide quotations for millions upon millions in revenue. Ingestion and decisions must be quickly formulated within these short periods of time without great allowance for availability of product experts, software architects and systems engineers. Even if said experts are freed-up from other, critical projects, the short duration allows little brainstorming and technical negotiations between customer and supplier to avoid accidentally-included constraints within the requirements that were over-stipulated by the customer or carryover from a previous SOW and unnecessary for the desired features...Extending the time or having a stable of idle experts are unreasonable changes, so probably the only possible solution is for the manufacturers to better understand systems engineering and how to better specify "what" the product is supposed to achieve as opposed to "how" will it accomplish it."
