“I’m really passionate about activism and making change on campus. It’s meaningful, and it has allowed me to make some amazing connections on and off campus.”

During her freshman year, Aiman Raza ‘22, biological sciences, was walking through the tables at UMBC’s annual Involvement Fest when she came across the Greenpeace student organization, which focuses on environmental activism. The group captured her interest and, over the past four years, she has worked to help the organization grow its presence on campus.

Raza was the group’s president during her sophomore and junior years. She says that this experience helped her develop her leadership skills, including during the challenging COVID-19 pandemic virtual events.

She also is involved in UMBC’s Muslim Student Association, and the Pakistani Student Association. These student organizations host events and bring people together for social, cultural, and religious events, as well as lectures and discussions. Being involved allowed Raza to build strong connections and get to know people outside of her major and across campus.

Raza serves as a mentor within the Biology Council of Majors as well. She meets with students who are earlier in their academic journeys, offering them guidance and support.

At UMBC, Raza has conducted research with Kevin Omland, professor of biological sciences, and at the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology, located in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. She also completed a virtual summer internship with the Smithsonian, where she studied fish and crustacean communities on oyster reefs in the Chesapeake Bay.

Almeida, whose first degree is in business, came from Brazil with the goal of redefining her career path. “In the U.S., I thought, I’ll try for the first time in my life to do something that I want to do. I’ve always wanted to change the world, and it seems like the most changes in the world happen in technology.” Almeida is excited to use her software engineering position at Amazon as a jumping off point for volunteering with young women interested in STEM, exposing them to what is possible.

“I want to be a model for middle school girls,” says Almeida. “I want that age group to know what’s possible in this field and for them to see someone like themselves designing software. When I started to code and saw my products running, then it really clicked for me—I can see myself building something that is actually going to be meaningful for the world.”

MCS Fall '22 Electives

By Joy Au

Still looking for an elective next fall? From media theory to marketing, MCS has a wide selection of courses that will equip you well with media literacy and communication skill sets valuable in any professional environment. While this broad array may seem overwhelming at first, I encourage you to take advantage of it and explore through media topics you may be unfamiliar with or even just slightly interested in! With any course you take with MCS, it’s never a matter of if it will be applicable, but just a matter of when — hence the reason you’ll find many UMBC scholars adding MCS as a double major to enhance their other degree. As you learn how media is woven through every aspect of society, you’ll be surprised to find how easily applicable the coursework is throughout seemingly unrelated aspects of your career and personal life. MCS 355 (Social Media: Networking) sparked my initial interest in the field of marketing and introduced the career option of social media marketing — something I hadn’t previously known existed at all; furthermore, the social media marketing campaign in MCS 355 (Social Media: Networking) definitely came in use as I proposed a rebranding project at my current job as a social media manager. All the research I’m currently doing on the westernization of Chinese food in MCS 499 (Senior Seminar) has me reconsidering a career of food journalism — something I’d previously written off. So take a look at what the MCS department has to offer, whether you’re an MCS major or not!

FY 2023 Sensitive Equipment Inventory begins July 1, 2022

<Tagline>Sent on Behalf of Inventory Management</Tagline>

The FY 2023 Sensitive Equipment Inventory will begin on July 1, 2022.The Sensitive Equipment Inventory is a University requirement that is conducted every three years by all campus departments. This procedure is necessary to account for the University's sensitive equipment and to identify any weakness in the University's policies and procedures for safeguarding our assets.

The FY 2023 Sensitive Equipment process has many new improvements! The campus is being divided into three groups for taking the inventory. Dividing the campus into smaller groups will enable the Inventory Management department to provide quality assistance to the property custodians should any difficulties arise. Each group will have 90 days to complete their inventory. After 45 days from the cycle's start date, Inventory Management will contact departments that have not completed their inventory to remind them of the requirement and to offer assistance. This reminder will also help prevent departments from procrastinating until the end of the cycle to have the inventory completed.

Inventory Management is also working with the Division of Information Technology to develop a DocuSign process to submit the Sensitive Equipment Inventory by the due dates. This process will enable property custodians to upload the required documentation for lost assets and will provide a workflow from the property custodian to the departmental approver to asset management, making the final steps to completing the inventory more efficient.

We will provide group assignments and potential training dates in a separate email. Please give your department's property custodian your full cooperation in order to make this task a success!

Remember Team Work...Makes the Dream Work!
