Candidate Campaign Speeches

<Tagline>Vote here for your future officers!</Tagline>

Here are the candidates for the coming year's officer positions! Voting is now open until May 2nd. The ballot is a google form accessed at the bottom of this post. Here are the candidates campaign speeches:

- Gabriella Lehman running for President:

My name is Gabriella Lehman and I'm running for President of the Ancient Studies Council. I will be a senior next academic year, double majoring in Ancient Studies and Anthropology. I feel that I would be a qualified candidate for this position because of my leadership skills. Growing up I was encouraged and accepted leadership roles in the United States Pony Club where I helped guide junior members and supported them while achieving their goals. In addition, in my places of employment I mentored, trained, and presented to new staff and potential employees. Ancient Studies is something I'm very passionate about and would consider it a privilege and highlight of my academic career to be president of the Ancient Studies Council.

- Mary Nolan running for Vice President and Secretary:

Hi everyone! My name is Mary Nolan, I'm a junior chemical engineering major with a minor in Ancient Studies. Learning about the ancient world has been my passion since I was a kid, and I have loved getting to incorporate my passion into my studies in school. Even more that that, I have loved getting to help plan events to help harbor this passion for the whole club as the 2021-2022 club vice president. I would love to get to lead again this upcoming semester and create even more fun events as we go into another school year!

- Julia Labuda running for Secretary:

I'm Julia Labuda, this is my third year at UMBC, and I'm an Ancient Studies major as well as a Bio major. I chose to be secretary because helping answer questions people have, further explaining certain events, or just writing posts is fun! I love to interact with people and keep things organized. I am qualified for this role due to the experience and skills that I have. I have been secretary to the ANCS club for 2 years and have made sure our members are informed of the latest events. As the secretary I am here to communicate with and help our members, and it is always a pleasant experience!

- Danielle Larios running for Treasurer:

Hi, my name is Danielle Larios and I am currently a freshman Chemical Engineering major and Ancient Studies minor applying for the position of treasurer! I believe that I am suited for the role of treasurer not only because I enjoy working with math and statistics to organize information, but also because I would love the opportunity to assist the club in planning events, especially after years of little to no in person interactions. Thank you for your consideration and I hope you have a good rest of your day!

Thank you to all that applied to this year's election! If you have any questions regarding voting or about the election in general, please contact our secretary at jlabuda1@umbc.edu

Full details are available at the link, but the nature of disability can often mean that the time, energy, motivation and creativity we have for this sort of community and work is variable. In proactive acknowledgement of that we seek to have a larger eboard than other clubs so that no one individual is singularly responsible for any project, and we all have the freedom to tap in and out as our lives permit. Our goal is to have an 11 member e-board so please nominate if you're interested!!

There are 3 specific roles that UMBC requires us to have in order to continue to be recognized, which are: President, Vice President, and Treasurer. (It's a common joke that no one wants to be treasurer, but it's by far the lowest commitment role so I'm hoping someone will consider it!)

We are using this same survey to form 3 low-commitment committees (activism, social, and creative) to further help spread the workload, and also to make it easier to be involved in the work our club wants to do. You can fill out the form just to sign up for a committee, you are not required to submit an officer nomination with it.

Nominations will be accepted: 4/25/22 through 5/1/22

Accepted nominees must submit their statement by: 5/5/22

Election will be held from: 5/6/22 through 5/12/22 (info is due to UMBC by 5/15!)

“Parenting in Privilege or Peril,” a new book by UMBC’s Pamela R. Bennett, explores barriers to the “American dream”

The notion of the “American dream”—that hard work can lead to social and economic mobility—has existed in the United States for centuries, and it has been disputed for almost as long. Pamela Bennett’s new book, Parenting in Privilege or Peril: How Social Inequality Enables or Derails the American Dream (Teachers College Press, 2021), takes on this idea. Bennett, associate professor of public policy, explores some of the social, educational, and economic factors that impact the decisions that middle- and working-class parents make in hopes that their children can attain the “American dream.”

Bennett co-authored the book with Amy Lutz, associate professor of sociology at Syracuse University, and Lakshmi Jayaram, founder of the Inquiry Research Group LLC and research associate with the University of Central Florida.

“We designed a research project to investigate the role that culture and social inequality play in the educationally relevant parenting strategies of working- and middle-class parents,” explains Bennett.

L-R: Amy Lutz, Lakshmi Jayaram, and Bennett at an American Sociological Association meeting.
After interviewing 50 parents from two public schools in a northern U.S. city, they found that middle- and working-class parents generally engaged in two types of parenting: defensive and strategic parenting.

Beyond the parent interviews, family survey data, census data, local police data, school climate data, and social network data provided further details about the economic resources parents had access to and the social conditions that impacted their wellbeing.

Defensive and strategic parenting

These two parenting approaches emerged when the researchers explored parents’ “values, orientations, and expectations” for their children’s educational journey as a pathway to achieve the “American dream.” Parents shared their lived experiences within their neighborhoods and schools, as well as work, social, and educational networks.

The data show both middle- and working-class parents share a goal of having college-educated children. However, the resources accessible to each group vary widely, as do the social conditions in which they live, which ultimately influence how the parents approach this goal.

Middle-class families with large social networks and economic resources were more likely to practice “strategic parenting” by making key decisions leading to their child’s academic improvement, new skill development, and variety of extracurricular activities. Their decisions were influenced by access to many choices and to safe neighborhoods and schools that helped parents nurture their children. This social context encourages adolescent independence and the personal growth needed to attend college.

    Pamela Bennett.

On the other hand, working-class parents in the study had more limited access to financial, social, and enrichment resources. They also had to consider how their child would engage in a world where neighborhoods and schools contain serious safety concerns. These safety concerns lead some parents to heavily monitor their teenagers’ interactions with peers and other adults and to shield them against actions that might limit their opportunities.

In this way, working-class parents generally practiced “defensive parenting,” making decisions that protected their children from harm while also working toward their social mobility.

Public impacts

The researchers hope this study can inform education policy designed to close the gap between working- and middle-class families’ access to the “American dream.” One key way to achieve this, Bennett suggests, is increasing neighborhood safety and access to academic enrichment activities.

Bennett’s work on social inequality in higher education and racial residential segregation spans two decades. This new book comes on the heels of several recent articles she has co-authored on topics related to affirmative action and collegiate outcomes, college entrance exams and academic performance, and talent loss among Blacks and Latinos following affirmative action bans. She and Amy Lutz will soon publish a new article, in Harvard Educational Review, on whether state bans differently affect the willingness of Black, White, Latinx, and Asian Americans to apply to selective colleges.

Recently, Bennett spoke about college access and affordability on Marketplace, a public radio show heard by more than 14 million listeners each week. She recommended hotlines for students and their families to ask questions about financial aid and direct support with completing FAFSA applications, particularly for first-generation college students. “The stakes are talent loss, frankly, for the country,” Bennett said.
