Abstract:

A game where the player takes the role of a snowman’s head and rolls around various levels in search of the rest of its body. Like a rolling snowball, the snowman’s head grows in size as it rolls on snowy ground and eventually can become big enough to destroy obstacles in the environment. Players must navigate their surroundings and reach the snowman body at the end in enough time to complete each level, earning extra points along the way for the amount of destruction they cause. This game was developed using the Unity game engine and required a collaborative effort to learn the coding techniques that allow the player character to move, grow larger, and interact with the game world. Development also required the ability to design a functioning user interface, knowledge of 3D modeling tools to build game objects and environment pieces, and the creation of a system to implement smooth-transitioning background music into the game, which itself was composed specifically for the project.

Earlier in the month, on the day when news rolled out about the appointment of UMBC’s next president, the woman who will take over for retiring president Freeman Hrabowski hopped a plane and made a surprise visit to Baltimore. Valerie Sheares Ashby, current dean of Duke University’s Trinity School of Arts & Sciences, may not officially start her role until August 1, but she’s already making a splash on campus.

“I showed up today, on the day of the announcement, because there was no way I was not going to show up in Freeman Hrabowski’s office to honor him,” Sheares Ashby told a group of campus leaders the morning of April 4th.

Sheares Ashby spent the rest of her two-day visit exploring campus and meeting students, faculty, staff, and civic leaders—much of the time with Hrabowski as her guide. With each new person she met, she shared her growing excitement about joining the UMBC community.

“It is a real honor,” she said. “The biggest compliment I have received today is, ‘Oh, this is perfect for you.’”

Thermodynamics originated in the need to understand novel technologies developed by the Industrial Revolution. However, over the centuries, the description of engines, refrigerators, thermal accelerators, and heaters has become so abstract that a direct application of the universal statements to real-life devices is everything but straight forward. The recent, rapid development of quantum thermodynamics has taken a similar trajectory, and, e.g., “quantum engines” have become a widely studied concept in theoretical research. However, if the newly unveiled laws of nature are to be useful, we need to write the dictionary that allows us to translate abstract statements of theoretical quantum thermodynamics to physical platforms and working mediums of experimentally realistic scenarios. To assist in this endeavor, this review is dedicated to provide an overview over the proposed and realized quantum thermodynamic devices and to highlight the commonalities and differences of the various physical situations.

<Tagline>Reminder: Please join us this afternoon!</Tagline>

Dear AAAFSC Members,

Please join us for our Spring 2022 Strategic Planning Meeting on April 20 from 4pm-5pm (virtual), where we will discuss the future of AAAFSC. During our meeting earlier this semester, the Executive Board discussed data around the numbers of Asian and Asian American faculty and staff on campus as provided in this race/ethnicity excel sheet. As a result, the Board identified some key areas of focus for AAAFSC to pursue moving forward:

Promoting Asian American faculty and staff achievements

Promoting and expanding Asian American leadership

Asking for more precision, clarity, and transparency with language around race because of how it is attached to resources. This is particularly unclear in the use of terms such as “underrepresented” or “unevenly represented” which seem to have targeted contexts.

Collecting more student data:

Asian American students broken down by college

Asian American students’s attrition/GPA/success

We welcome any feedback or additional concerns you would like to raise prior to and during the meeting as we continue the important work of supporting our Asian and Asian American community members.
