Dr. Philip Mann to join UMBC Music Faculty

We are delighted to introduce Dr. Philip Mann who will join the UMBC faculty in Fall 2022 as an Assistant Professor of Music. His work will include directing the UMBC Symphony and teaching conducting. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Mann to UMBC!

Hailed by the BBC as a "talent to watch out for, who conveys a mature command of his forces," American conductor Philip Mann has a worldwide reputation as an "expressively graceful yet passionate" artist with a range spanning symphonic repertoire, opera, new music, and experimental collaborations. Elected a Rhodes Scholar, he won the Vienna Philharmonic's Karajan Fellowship at the Salzburg Festival and was named an American Conducting Fellow with the League of American Orchestras. As Music Director of the Arkansas Symphony, his tenure has been described as among the most successful of any American music director in decades, as the state orchestra experienced a complete turnaround under his leadership with unprecedented artistic growth, numerous attendance records, construction of a new home concert hall and 6 others around the state, launches of several groundbreaking and innovative performance series and collaborations, expansion of classical programming weeks and full-time musician positions, the return of fully staged opera to the metropolitan area, all 9 consecutive years in financial surplus, the founding of Arkansas's first collaborative arts festival-ACANSA, and a profile change from a regional orchestra to that of an ensemble garnering international attention and major orchestra comparisons. He currently appears as Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Texarkana Symphony Orchestra.

Mann's conducting engagements have included major orchestras, operas, and festivals in Europe, USA, and Asia, including ensembles such as l'Orchestre symphonique de Quebec, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Mexico City Philharmonic, National Radio Orchestra of Romania, Voronezh Philharmonic, Georgian State Opera, National Symphony of Cyprus, Sofia Philharmonic, Busan Philharmonic, Phoenix Symphony, Sarasota Symphony, Grand Rapids Symphony, Symphony in C, the New Mexico Philharmonic, and the Tulsa Symphony. He has worked with leading artists such as Joshua Bell, Sharon Isbin, Susan Graham, Midori, Marvin Hamlisch Dmitri Alexeev, and is highly sought after by composers for major premiers including: John Corigliano, Joan Tower, Jennifer Higdon, Samuel Adler, Michael Torke, Christopher Theofanidis, Elena Katz-Chernin, Michael Fine, DJ Sparr, Adam Schoenberg, and many others. His Brahms collaboration with the London Symphony Orchestra and pianist Norman Krieger on Decca Records has received numerous rave reviews and his recording with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in the works of Michael Fine has garnered extensive praise and been named to major award watchlists. His recent debut on SONY Classics as Founding Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of Ensemble Bravura has garnered further critical acclaim-available HERE.

His diverse collaborations with leaders and prominent civil rights advocates like George Takei have also garnered him much praise for leveraging the power of music toward poignant community conversations, enhancing the relevance of symphony orchestras to communities, and successful audience development. Sought after as a mentor and teacher of conducting, his students have earned numerous student gold medal successes at international competitions, significant prizes/awards, appointments to prominent international orchestras, debuts with major orchestras and artists, and appointments to university faculties.

Abstract:

Photography is one of the most powerful mediums of art, because of its ability to showcase the world through an artist's eyes. Despite this, however, in western media only a select group of voices are pushed to the forefront. Unfortunately these selections tend to favor white voices while discounting those of minorities. This marginalization extends beyond the art world and bleeds into other communities as well. Growing up as a queer Asian individual, I was often excluded from multiple communities I identified with and felt my voice was not worthy or deserving of being heard. Compelled by this, this series of photographs explores the expression of gender, my identity as a queer Asian individual, as well as the unique Asian American experience. I hope that this project inspires and empowers others to live unafraid and unapologetically.

Please join us for our Spring 2022 Strategic Planning Meeting on April 20 from 4pm-5pm (virtual), where we will discuss the future of AAAFSC. During our meeting earlier this semester, the Executive Board discussed data around the numbers of Asian and Asian American faculty and staff on campus as provided in this race/ethnicity excel sheet. As a result, the Board identified some key areas of focus for AAAFSC to pursue moving forward:

Promoting Asian American faculty and staff achievements

Promoting and expanding Asian American leadership

Asking for more precision, clarity, and transparency with language around race because of how it is attached to resources. This is particularly unclear in the use of terms such as “underrepresented” or “unevenly represented” which seem to have targeted contexts.

Collecting more student data:

Asian American students broken down by college

Asian American students’s attrition/GPA/success

We welcome any feedback or additional concerns you would like to raise prior to and during the meeting as we continue the important work of supporting our Asian and Asian American community members.

PAEA Program Directory

Hi everyone. I just received this message from the Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA):

PAEA is very excited to announce the launch of our new
and improved PAEA Program Directory. The
directory has a map view or a list view, allowing applicants to view the
geographical span of our PA programs across the country. We've included
advance filtering options such as GRE requirement, veteran support, minimum
GPA, etc. In an effort to help our students, especially our students who
are traditionally Underrepresented in Medicine, find support and belonging
in the program they choose, we've added fields for each program such as:

Supplemental
             Fee Waiver

Program
             Matriculants by Gender

Program
             Matriculants by Ethnicity

Required
             Onsite Interview

Virtual
             Experience Hours Accepted

The 2022-23 CASPA Application Cycle will launch on April
28, 2022, and we are confident that the Directory will prove to be a useful
tool for both advisors and students interested in learning more about our
PA programs and preparing for the upcoming cycles. In addition, we have
increased our fee waiver allotment to include both the first and second
designation an applicant applies to. Instead of just covering the initial
$179 fee, the waiver will now cover the initial $179 + $56 = $235 total.
I've included an infographic that has more information about this process
and how it is different from the previous waiver program.

We are very excited about these changes and the impact they will
potentially have on our applicants! If you have any questions, please feel
free to reach out to me directly at hstorm@PAEAonline.org.
