Hike on Saturday + Patapsco River Scouting

Hello everyone!

We have two things to share with you all. First is a reminder that we have our next hike coming up this Saturday. Secondly, there is an interesting opportunity for those interested in kayaking and the Patapsco river.

Patapsco Hike

In regards to the hike, we will be hitting the trail on Saturday (the 23rd). We will meet at the RAC at 9:45 am. Expect the hike to take 4 or 5 hours. If you have not already submitted a waiver for this semester, you can fill out the attached document and submit it to us either electronically or by bringing it with you to the hike.

Many of you may be familiar with the trail, as we are headed back to Cascade falls. For those of you who aren't familiar, the hike will be an approximately 8 mile round trip from the RAC. The terrain is friendly, with more than half the hike being on paved roads/walkways.

Officer Elections

I would like to remind everyone that the window to run for a club leadership position is still open. If you are an undergraduate, please consider running for a leadership position. Applications are due on Sunday, May 1st. Voting will begin on Monday, May 2nd and continue until our next meeting on Friday, May 6th.

As a reminder, the positions that need to be filled are:

- President

- Vice President

- Treasurer

I highly recommend that you consider running as these positions are a great way to develop and practice leadership skills as well as giving back to the club.

To emphasize, all three leaderships must be filled or the club cannot be renewed for next year.

Patapsco River Scouting

I have been approached with an interesting opportunity to share with you all. As some of you may know, the Patapsco river is not known to have a lot of boating activity downstream of the Patapsco Valley State Park. To try to restore the river, a handful of community members are gathering to asses the Patapsco river and see what needs to be done to restore the historical river.

They have requested the help of the Outdoor Recreation Club, so if you like kayaking and are willing to help them test the river and record footage for them, read on below.

    Important note:

This effort is led by community members, not a formal organization. like all water sports, kayaking can be dangerous. If you choose to participate, you acknowledge that the organizers behind this trip are not liable should anything go wrong.

More information is available below (with an interest form if you would like to participate). From one of the organizers:

Kayaking trip seeks up to 3 paddlers to scout the lower Patapsco River valley. In April, while the river runs high enough ;)

A few local paddlers are floating the river, below the park entrance, to assess the navigability of the river, as it makes its way east down toward Baltimore's harbor. This small group float will help identify the possibility of a larger group float in the future. Experienced paddlers, with gear and GoPro cameras are welcome to join and record the day.

We're not sure what we'll find, so walking in ankle deep water, portage, etc. is certainly possible. This is an individual event, not organized by any group. Put in and take out are yet to be determined. Expect a two-hour day, possibly more.

Individuals interested in the paddle can inquire here:

https://www.oursharedimpact.com/patapsco

UMBC Summer Day Camp

<Tagline>Seeking Camp Counselors</Tagline>

Counselors are the most important part of the Summer Day Camp; you are the face of this camp. Parents, other staff in the facility, and most importantly, the campers will be looking up to you; you are in direct contact with the campers all day, every day. It is the attitude and behavior of the counselors that shape the campers' experience. The counselors should always have a positive attitude. Counselors should never let a "bad day" affect their attitude at camp, and all personal problems should be kept at home. Finally, you must remember that no matter how inappropriately a child is behaving, it is our job to return the child to their parent/guardian in a better state than when they were dropped off; ensuring the child had a positive experience. In addition, counselors are responsible for the following:

Knowing the campers in his/her group by name.

Keeping all campers safe and with their group at all times.

Directing activities and acting as the primary leader of the group.

Assisting the camp director, pool staff and instructors as needed in activities.

Responsible for assisting special instructors (tennis, dance, fitness, arts and crafts).

Count the group (face-counts) both before and after transitions to ensure all campers are present.

Preparing "counselor choice" activities daily.

Reporting to Camp Directors any concerns related to campers.

Attending mandatory counselor meetings.

Keeping one walkie-talkie on AND within hearing range at all times.
