Thinking innovatively means paying attention to design

<Tagline>Conversation with Tim Brown</Tagline>

"...If innovation is going to thrive, Tim believes we must rethink the role of leaders. “The notion that leaders have all the answers is toxic to innovation,” he argues. Says Tim, “We need leaders who inspire curiosity and discovery by asking insightful questions that send the organization off in new and interesting directions. I like the metaphor of an explorer who stands on the beach, looks at the horizon, and asks, ‘What’s on the other side of the horizon? What happens if we go in that direction?’ And then encourages people to get into boats and set off.” (Fast Company, 1 April 2022)

Anarchism in the Spanish Civil War

Hey everybody,

We crushed it last week. This week we will be discussing anarchist theory, philosophy and practice in the Spanish Civil War. Most of the time our political imagination is rather congested. We cannot think beyond what we are aware of in history and it stifles our political creativity. Considering the shape of the world we need to get creative and in a big way.

For this reason, Wednesday will be a combination of history lesson and philosophical discussion. By exploring how the anarchist workers movement in Spain attempted to put its ideas into practice in its fight against Francisco Franco's 1936 military coup, we will have a better understanding of what anarchism is as a political philosophy and how anarchist socialism or libertarian communism relates to other forms of socialism and communism.

Some important questions we will consider include: is an anarchist society as envisioned by the Spanish anarchist movement desirable or is it not desirable? Is an anarchist society feasible or is it not feasible? If it is desirable, how do we ethically implement it?

I'm super stoked to hear everyone's opinion on this subject. Its near and dear to my heart.

LGBTQ+ Student Union 2022 Election Nomination Form

<Tagline>Nominate yourself or another person to be on the board</Tagline>

It's about that time of year to start the process of electing the LGBTQ+ Student Union's Executive Board for 2022-2023. Our board of directors is the core of our organization as they manage our funding, events, meetings, and more! The following positions are up for election:

     - Executive Director

     - Financial Director

     - Education & Advocacy Director

     - Social & Membership Director

     - Communications Director

Descriptions for each position from both our constitution and the current board member are available throughout this form and posted on our myUMBC page.

You may nominate any UMBC student for any position listed above. Self-nominations are encouraged! Nominations close on April 15th, so don't hesitate on your submission. You may submit more than one nomination as well. All students nominated will be contacted to see if they accept their nomination and to give them information on their role in the election process.

If you are at all interested, we highly encourage you to apply! This is not only a good leadership opportunity, but also a great way to get involved on campus and in our community! New perspectives help keep our organization from leaving anyone behind and elevate new ideas!

Additionally, we thank you in advance for your patience as we try our best to make our elections as accessible as possible during remote instruction. Our current board is working on setting up ways to allow you to get to know our nominees and allow for the discussion style elections we usually participate in. We will keep you updated as soon as we know how we plan to move forward.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to any of our current board members (their emails will be listed with the position description) or to our Social and Membership Director, Angelica Mansfield, at angelim1@umbc.edu
