Use of video conferencing platforms for interviews
What to use in place of face to face interviews - COVID-19
Our office has received several information requests about using virtual/online formats to take the place of previously planned (and IRB approved) in-person interviews conducted outside of campus. Use of such formats may be useful to PIs to conduct human subjects use research during the COVID-19 event.
We checked with Mark Cather of UMBC Department of Information Technology(DoIT). He recommended an online conferencing tool that would provide security and confidentiality which would meet the IRB's requirements for maintaining privacy and ensuring confidentiality. Remember, these are requirements stated in an approved IRB protocol.
The only solution DoIT supports for UMBC investigators is
WebEx. DoIT has certified it up to level 3 (see the IRBs
guidance on security requirements), which means it is good with all data types (including HIPAA). DoIT has several FAQs and instruction guides
posted to assist investigators if there are plans to add to a protocol.
Speaking of which, if an investigator plans to add Webex use to an existing protocol, please be sure to forward a
protocol modification and have it approved
before using.

Shout Out To Lauren Gouin 2020 Malcolm Braly Award Winner
The Braly Award for Creative Nonfiction
The Braly Award for Creative Nonfiction: "Cakes of Significance" by Lauren Gouin
Lauren Gouin wants to live in a world where mediocre, white male authors cease to be the loudest literary voice monopolizing the canon but until then, she'll continue to share her personal stories of struggle and redemption especially when helping her nine-year-old with their math homework.
The Malcolm C. Braly Creative Writing Award was established to honor the memory of Malcolm C. Braly, who was a member of the UMBC English Department until his death in 1980. Awards are made in fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction. More information about the Braly Award and other awards and scholarships can be found on the
English department website.
Lauren was also chosen as the Creative Nonfiction section winner for Bartleby's 40th edition(UMBC's Literary Magazine) which will be released in May. When not writing, she is working towards social justice and earning her teaching certification in Secondary English.
We are very proud of Lauren and look forward to seeing her continued success!

Looking for a male roommate off campus for 2020-2021
Next semester, I will be a part of an academic program where I work during one semester and then I go to school for the next semester. This makes it so that I can't live on campus anymore and have to find off campus housing. Whether you have a place to live already and am looking for a roommate or are looking to find a place to stay with someone and we would look for a place together, I am looking for males with either situation. The housing would start in the fall, but I would like to get a lease for a place this summer.

With spring in bloom, breakup season looked like it was just around the corner! That is of course, until a few days ago. There’s been a disturbance in the force of college relationships and cuffing season is upon us again!
It’s now doomsday cuffing season, like winter cuffing season with a twist. Like the movie Two Night Stand met Contagion, and if you haven’t seen either of those don’t worry there will be plenty of time to do so.
