Looking for Roommate

<Tagline>Beautiful house in walking distance of campus!</Tagline>

Starting Feb 15th, we have an unfurnished room with closet in a single family home. It is within walking to UMBC, driving to downtown Baltimore (there are also buses), UMB, and JHU. Access to the rest of the house (kitchen, laundry, sunroom), wifi, and a shared bathroom (or another, mostly private one if you want to go downstairs). There is a good sized yard and patio and we're super close to the forest. The room is $600/mo plus shared utilities, the security deposit is 1 mo rent. We do have a full sized mattress if you need.

We are young professionals, with 3 cats and a dog and 2 snakes. We are nerds and outdoors people. We are laid back, have a weekly dungeons & dragons game, and love reading/video games/movies, etc. We love hiking, camping, and other outdoor activities. I am also artistic so there's frequently art projects around. We are the chaotic type of people and extremely busy so we'll be in and out. If you are looking for a pristine environment, we are not the house for you.

We like a "Friends" type situation, although we've had a ton of roommates that are very much "stay in their room types". Absolutely no smoking inside or where smoke can get in the house (allergy). We are LGBTQIA+ friendly. We're sorry, at this time we cannot accept more pets (unless they're like fish or something). Please feel free to contact at shale1@umbc.edu with questions!

**Please know that the photos are from when we moved in.

UMBC’s Participation in the ACE Internationalization

    Dear UMBC Community,

Since the time of UMBC’s founding, our university community has recognized the benefits of international and global engagement, and the ways in which these activities support and enhance our mission as a research university. Many of our current students, faculty, and staff both facilitate and benefit from strong academic, personal, and professional connections around the world.

In 2018, UMBC was one of only eleven institutions in the nation selected to participate in the American Council on Education's (ACE) Internationalization Laboratory. This cohort-based program provides a guided process for higher education institutions to assess their current state of internationalization and also develop a plan for advancing the intercultural, international, and global dimensions of their mission, focusing in particular on the areas of education, research, and community engagement.

Since fall 2018, UMBC’s Internationalization Steering Committee and six subcommittees have led a campus-wide effort involving a rigorous self-study and wide-ranging conversations with the campus community focused on internationalization at UMBC. Today we are pleased to share with you UMBC’s Interim Report on Internationalization, a document that provides a snapshot of internationalization as it exists at UMBC today and proposes a number of recommendations as we consider the nature and scale of our international activities in the future.

We wish to thank the more than 400 students, faculty, and staff who helped guide the development of this report through active participation in subcommittee meetings, surveys, and/or focus groups. We also would like to thank the nearly 300 people who participated in the 2019 University Retreat and discussed and reviewed the initial findings and recommendations of the subcommittees. For your reference, background materials, including posters and session handouts that were provided to retreat participants, are available online.

As we develop a final report and recommendations in summer 2020, we hope that you will take this opportunity to read the interim report and provide feedback and further points of consideration using this short survey. We recognize that not every activity, partnership, and program of an international nature involving members of our community could be captured by the subcommittees because of the organic nature of many international initiatives. Therefore, we are also asking for your help in identifying in the survey any current missing international elements or activities.

This anonymous survey will be available until February 28, 2020.

President Freeman Hrabowski and Provost Philip Rous

The room is a great size and it is very bright with two large windows. There are two closets for lots of storage space. The room does not share walls with any other bedrooms, so it is very nice and private. Additionally, the carpet is new since the whole house has recently been refinished. It is located on the second level of the house and the bathroom is shared with one other person. There are two people total in the house and we are very quiet, respectful, and clean.

The main floor is a common space that includes a half bath, the kitchen, washer/dryer, and the living room. We try to be respectful and organized so these spaces are always kept tidy. The kitchen is equipped with dishes, stove, oven, microwave, dishwasher, laundry, etc.

For groceries and shopping, there is a Walmart, Giants, and Costco nearby. Arundel Mills Mall is just ten minutes away.

We are focused on our studies and are very easy to live with. We are looking for a person who also wants to live in a clean, quiet place. We ask that there is no smoking, pets, or parties. UMBC students preferred.

Baltimore Field School: The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation supports UMBC’s inclusive approach to community-based research

UMBC’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) is pleased to announce the launch of a fourteen-month initiative to promote diversity, inclusion, and social justice in the public humanities, supported by a $125,000 grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The project, Strengthening UMBC’s Public Humanities Infrastructure: The Baltimore Field School, will create a framework for faculty to collaborate with community organizations in building ethical and sustainable research and teaching projects focused on public humanities.

A new view of public humanities

The Baltimore Field School is coordinated by UMBC’s Orser Center for the Study of Place, Community, and Culture and led by Nicole King, associate professor of American Studies and director of the Orser Center, and CAHSS Dean Scott Casper. It aims to advance UMBC’s humanistic scholarship and teaching, rooted in deep and meaningful engagement with communities and neighborhoods.

“We want to think differently about how public humanities work can be done by reflecting on what ethical community-university partnerships look like,” says King.

King’s 2017 Learning from Lexington students hosted their Zine Launch + Open Mic at Lexington Market. Image by Kimberly Zerfas. Photo by Marlayna Demond ’11 for UMBC.

“This collaborative process takes a great deal of time, listening, and building trust,” King explains. “The people living and working in city neighborhoods and building grassroots organizations should be centered in the process of defining challenges and ways to address them in Baltimore and cities like it.”

UMBC students interview a local business owner.

The field school’s three pillars

This new initiative is rooted in three pillars. First, it seeks to enhance the understanding and visibility of communities in South and Southwest Baltimore, including their cultures and the challenges they face, from a variety of humanities-centered methods. Second, it will cultivate a national model of effective ethical humanities research, teaching, and learning about Baltimore and cities like it. Finally, it will expand UMBC’s infrastructure of engagement for public humanities research and teaching based in Baltimore.

This project builds on previous innovative humanities work at UMBC, supported by The Mellon Foundation. In 2017, The Mellon Foundation provided a five-year, $750,000 grant for UMBC’s Dresher Center for the Humanities and CAHSS to create the Inclusion Imperative. The project was designed to grow a regional community of scholars committed to diversity in the humanities. It has also sought to expand community-engaged humanities research and teaching around issues of race, equity, inclusion, and justice.

An arabber sells produce form a horse-drawn cart in Baltimore.

“Faculty, staff, and students in the humanities have for many years been at the forefront of UMBC’s engagement with communities in and around Baltimore,” says Casper. “Thanks to this support from The Mellon Foundation, we look forward to deepening our work and strengthening its foundations across disciplines and beyond individual projects.”

To meet these goals, the Orser Center’s advisory committee and graduate students will convene, listen to, and plan with community organizations on an ongoing basis. They will also work with community partners to develop ethical principles for public humanities research and teaching. This information will be used to develop and execute a planning pilot of the Field School in summer 2020 and a Community Fellows Program in public humanities in fall 2020.

“The Baltimore Field School is a powerful standard for our community-focused work across campus and part of UMBC’s vision to Extend Beyond,” shared President Freeman Hrabowski, in voicing his support for the project. “It is rooted in UMBC’s proud history of diversity, inclusion, and social justice, and it helps us put those commitments into action in our local communities.”

We hope you had a great winter break! As we get ready for the next semester, we wanted to share some updates:

GBM times this semester will be every Monday from 12-1 pm in ITE 241 starting February 10th

Project Update: The community of San Rafael has purchased a new water storage tank that is able to meet their needs, so we are switching gears to a new first project: Either a disinfection system/metering system or a spring box for their second source. We will go over this at the first GBM, but for more details see the latest project meeting notes here.

We will be trying new ways of distributing work this semester so everyone is involved - so we will welcome any feedback

Our Gritstarter page is still up and running, so share it everywhere to help us reach our goal of $5,000! (See the page here)

Finally, we share the majority of our updates through a project team GroupMe, so if you have not joined this chat and would like to please email umbc.ewb@gmail.com with your phone number and we will add you.

Enjoy the last weekend of your break, and we're excited to start a new semester!
