This December, we celebrated the achievements and accomplishments of the class of 2019. President Freeman Hrabowski addressed the magnitude of the occasion saying, “Today, graduates, this is a time for dreams fulfilled.”

Some of our graduates called UMBC “home” from day one, and some found us in their second act. Some pursued their passions, and some found new ones entirely. Some relied on a tight-knit family structure, and some leaned on community support. But all of our graduates are bringing the knowledge they gained at UMBC to their futures. We can’t wait to see what’s next for these members of #RetrieverNation!

Winter break outages

All,

This notice is to inform you of upcoming system outages that Facilities Management is planning in order to perform repairs to critical systems. This notice is being sent to Chairs and Building Managers. VPs and Deans will also receive this notice via the VP and Deans group.

Please forward this notice to anyone that may not be included in the previously mentioned groups.

As always, if staff or faculty feel that an outage can not be supported, please email me with the concern so that we can attempt to mitigate the concerns and keep the outages on track.

    Campus Wide Power Outage:

December 29th 6am - 4pm

Baltimore Gas and Electric and UMBC have identified Sunday December 29th to conduct a campus wide power outage in order to complete three repairs, which were identified through a comprehensive inspection of their electrical distribution system. This is the only campus wide power outage needed to complete these repairs.

The TRC will not lose power during this outage.

Brief High Temperature Hot Water (HTHW) outages:

December 30th 9am - 11am and 5pm - 6pm

January 4th 7am - 10am

These brief HTHW outages will allow FM to replace an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) at the central plant. On 22 July 19 FM suffered a HTHW outage for two days due to damage to our ATS at the central plant. FM has been using a rental ATS while a new ATS was being built. These outages will allow FM to install the new ATS and restore the central plant to normal operation.

Building occupants may see temperatures within their spaces drop a couple of degrees during these outages, but temperatures will return to normal quickly.

Chilled Water System Outage:

January 6th through January 10th

Maintenance to replace six valves in the Chilled Water System will be completed during this outage. FM is also installing a new valve during this outage, which will allow future maintenance of this nature to be performed without the need for a system wide outage.

The Chilled Water System will be turned off at 7am on 6 Jan and will be turned back on by 5pm 10 Jan.

During this 5 day outage, no processed chilled water will be available.

There will be little noticeable difference to building temperatures during this outage.

Friendly Reminder: Final Fall 2019 grades will be updated on Academic Official Transcripts for all UMBC students on January 9, 2020.

In early January, the Merit Scholarship Unit will conduct their mid year academic review for all current UMBC merit scholars to ensure they are maintaining their scholarship requirements. Scholar recipients are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average (which may vary depending upon their awarded scholarship) as well as maintain full-time enrollment (part-time for transfer scholars) each fall and spring semester.

Recipients failing to meet these requirements will lose their scholarship and be notified via e-mail, myUMBC Alert & by USPS mail of their award discontinuation.

First Semester Freshman
Freshmen scholars beginning Fall 2019 who fail to meet the 3.25 cumulative GPA and/or full-time enrollment requirement, will automatically be placed on Scholarship Warning. No Scholarship Discontinuation Appeal is required. Scholarship Warning automatically places a student on a warning period, while granting them continuous receipt of their scholarship for the spring semester (for first-semester (fall) freshmen only.) This allows them one additional semester to improve their academics by utilizing resources on campus and strengthening study and time management skills.

Incomplete or Incorrect Grades:
If you had incomplete or incorrect grades that have since been updated on your Academic Transcript, please report this concern using our online Scholarship Contact Form so our committee may re-review. Please do not submit a Discontinuation Appeal Request.

Fall 2019 "Scholarship Probation" scholars:
Scholars currently on Fall 2019 Scholarship Probation will be evaluated to determine if the student has met the terms of their award and can be placed back in "Good Standing." Scholars failing to continue meeting their terms will be discontinued and will need to re-appeal for a probation extension.

Upper Classmen
Once a scholar has been discontinued from their merit scholarship, their award will not be reinstated regardless if the student is able to meet the terms of their scholarship in a future semester. Students, however, will have approximately 2 weeks following official notification to appeal the status of their discontinuation. If approved, scholars will be placed on Scholarship Probation and remain under review for one (1) academic semester.

The application for Fall 2019 discontinuation appeals goes live January 6, 2020

The deadline for all Scholarship Discontinuation Appeals is 4:00PM on Friday, January 24, 2020 (for Fall 2019 discontinuations only). There will be no extensions to appeal after the deadline.

Previous semester discontinuation appeals will not be accepted.

Note: You are receiving this notification because you are enrolled in the UMBC Student Group: UMBC Merit Scholars.
