Initiatives

Senate posted Burgers at DePaola's Pub vlog: 4th episode of the vlog series.

Senate is working on getting more "One Way" signs on the Popular drive to stop people from driving backward.

Senate is setting a meeting with the neighboring middle school kids to meet the SGA.

Business at OCA Mocha is fairing well.

  • Students and non-students can book space and have fundraisers.

  • The application process to get your art in their art gallery coming soon.

  • Staff will direct people to appropriate parking for big events.

Managing large numbers of students and groups is an important tool in Blackboard. In the current version of Ultra, faculty had to create assignments and discussions before they could create and attach a group to the graded activity. With the December update, the Groups Set tool is enhanced to allow faculty to create groups before attaching them to assignments.

An additional enhancement to the groups tool will also allow faculty to assign students to a group if they are not already in one or move a student to a different group. This setting addresses an important need when students join a class after a group activity has started or if they do not join a self-enrolled group by an appointed deadline.

Note: Group Sets still do not have a bulk student enrollment option. We have reported this as a priority need to the Ultra developers. Self-enroll is not available for Group Sets. 

With the December update, faculty can create ungraded assignments. The existing workaround required using a zero-point test question; the upgrade to assignments now allows faculty to set the entire assignment to zero points.

The next Blackboard Learn update will be posted to our test site around December 10th and pushed to production in early February 2020. Faculty who are interested in test driving new features before they are released to production should open an RT ticket to request early access.

I am creating an interactive installation combining a sculpture, with touch designer and Arduino elements. There are two main goals, I am looking to achieve, the first is to change the LED lights to work along side the installation. Second I would like to have a sensor embedded into a podium which will track and collect the subjects heart rate and then is visualized through imagery and sound. It is our belief that this new name will better reflect the current and evolving needs of the LGBTQA+ community and better represents our diverse and inclusive needs. Please, remember to be patient with us. The full rebranding process will take some time (we'll have lots of online and hard copy materials to update). However, you should start witnessing a slow roll out of the name throughout the semester - with an eventual ribbon cutting by the end of spring.


We will be sure to keep you posted with updates as they become available.

This Giving Tuesday, will you help support 36 UMBC students who will spend Spring Break 2020 exploring social challenges and potential solutions in Baltimore?

Alternative Spring Break (ASB) participants work with nonprofits, city governments, community organizers, residents, and activists. They develop a new sense of the human-scale impacts and dimensions of abstract, systemic issues: seeing the impacts on the people affected, and understanding a variety of perspectives on the problem. In addition, they develop skills that help them reflect on experiences; share, solicit, and make use of stories; build community; work in partnerships; and analyze approaches to problem-solving to identify what works, and what else is possible.

All UMBC ASB experiences are designed and led by students with support from the Center for Democracy and Civic Life. Please consider donating and helping us spread the word. Thank you!
