Dear colleagues,
Due to illness, Dr. Hirokazu Yoshikawa is unfortunately unable to give the March 26th Social Sciences Forum lecture as scheduled. We regret any inconvenience this cancellation may cause for those of you who had been planning to attend, and we hope to bring Dr. Yoshikawa back to UMBC in the near future.
In the meantime, please be sure to attend our three remaining Social Sciences Forum lectures:
March 28, Dr. Joo Hyung Han, 50+ Korean, “The Future of Aging in South Korea”
April 3, Dr. Jamie Thomas, Swarthmore College, “Zombies Speak Swahili”
April 10, Dr. Martha Jones, Johns Hopkins University, “Birthright Citizens”
Newly admitted students for the fall may not register for courses until Summer Orientation. Please sign up for Orientation here. If you have been admitted for the fall semester, but wish to take summer classes at UMBC, please contact Admissions.
Open house: Taking the pulse of the UMBC community
11 a.m. – 2 p.m., The Commons Main Street
Stop by Main Street in The Commons to share a brief message about your thoughts on the intersection of science and faith and get the dialogue started with your peers. Staff will be available to help facilitate conversation.
Workshop for Researchers: Science communication and engagement with religious publics
Noon – 4 p.m., Library 7th Floor - walk-ins are welcome!
Are you involved in public science engagement, or thinking about it? Are you interested in promoting dialogue about science with a broader spectrum of individuals and communities? Are you concerned about effectively navigating potential tensions at the intersections of science, culture, and faith in your classroom, your laboratory, on social media, in policy discussions, or in public settings? Then this workshop is for you. It is geared toward STEM researchers. The limit is 50 participants and as of tonight we are not at capacity per registration, so walk-ins will be welcome, including undergraduate researchers, as space allows.
Public Panel: Science engagement and dialogue with faith communities
5:30 – 7 p.m., University Center Ballroom
Open to the public, followed by a heavy hors d'oeuvres reception. Panelists include four leaders active in work at the intersection of science and faith. They are scientists who personally practice a range of faiths and bring a rich set of stories around how their own experiences have influenced their work. The panel is moderated by Steve Freeland, director of the Individualized Study Program at UMBC and himself a leader in work at this intersection.
Please join us however you can and share with others!
We are currently renting out a room in a 2BHK apartment, located in Mount Ridge Community in Catonsville. The apartment is very close to UMBC campus (1-2 miles away) and is in a great neighborhood mostly consisting of UMBC students or families. UMBC shuttle comes right in front of the apartment providing easy transportation for students without a car. The room itself is very spacious and will cater to a person who needs lots of space. There is ample parking in the neighborhood and will never be an issue even if you try to find a parking spot late at night.
Walking distance to Giant, New Dunkin donuts, and shopping center. Located about 10 minutes drive to Ellicott City, 15 minutes drive to Inner Harbor and 20 minutes drive to Columbia, Arundel, and Owing Mills neighborhood.
We are hoping to rent out, possibly starting May 1st or earlier.
The apartment will be shared with two other roommates. One is a UMBC student while other is a working professional. Both current roommates are clean and respectful. We prefer students and working professionals.
The asking rent for the room is $400. Utilities (Internet and BGE) are not included in the rent and can vary from $40-$60 a month. Deposit ($400) and background check are required.
