Thursday, April 18, 2pm: RTKL Lecture with Chinen Aimi Bouillon

The Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture presents the annual MFA Thesis Exhibition, featuring works by the five graduate students will who receive MFAs in Intermedia and Digital Arts in 2019. The work selected represents the culmination of each student’s unique experience in UMBC’s dynamic and demanding MFA program.

Chinen Aimi Bouillon works as a detective investigating matrilineal and patrilineal histories. She is an artist born in Okinawa, Japan, former Ryukyu Kingdom, to a native mother and a United States Marine father. Through framing territories of contradiction she analyzes the duality of everyday gender, power and war. Her art is the process of discovery and findings of matrilineal histories colonized by patriarchal narratives. The gallery displays images of Okinawa taken on a 35mm black and white film with photograms of signs and symbols transliterating the Ryukyu oral language and a table top with geographic outline of Okinawa island. The installation plays with the assumed hierarchy of knowledge.

Dilay Kocogullari’s installation – 300 ovary-shaped crocheted pouches, filled with living grass and hanging from the ceiling – is a memorial to the increasing number of women murdered in her home country, Turkey. On the walls appear videos of 70 Turkish participants who helped crochet the pouches in a collaborative act of resistance to femicide.

In Leah Michaels’ thesis video installation, she appears as surfer and priestess, performing last-rite rituals for the ocean, accompanying “her” – the sea – as “she” is dying. As viewers move through and around the installation, they create metaphoric currents, bear witness to the rituals, and join in mourning the ocean’s impending passing.

Bryan O’Neill is an intermedia artist utilizing sculpture, photography, and performance to create work which explores intersections of mankind and Nature. Focusing on American ideas of wilderness, survivalism, manliness, and absurdity he explores the ecological thought and the performance of masculinity in the culture of the outdoorsman. His process focuses heavily upon repetition to create installations which reveal hours of meditative effort through salvaged wood, camp rope, and resin.

Nicole Ringel's “Remnants, Remainders, Ghosts, and Continuities” is two translations of observed details, researched history, and traced paths gathered over the past year in the Hollins Market: a site-specific walking experience in Hollins Market, Baltimore, and an installation that employs undulating text, images, and movement to explore the relationship between body and landscape.

Admission is free.

Mollye Bendell '18 receives Harvestworks Residency

"The Language of the Angels is an immersive virtual reality artwork that playfully addresses the changing conception of space and place within our own consciousness. The work consists of an obsessively detailed model of Mollye’s bedroom, drawing tension between technology and consciousness to represent the realities we construct. Each week, a new “chapter” of the room is released, allowing viewers to manipulate the space and create alternative realities. The Language of the Angels will be released on a dedicated website each week.

Mollye Bendell makes digital and analog sculptures for digital and analog worlds. Her practice explores the dissolving line between the digital and the physical that defines the human/user experience of “things.” In her work, she experiments with virtual reality, 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC machining, circuit building and bending, and codeable objects. The intangible nature of electronic media is used as a metaphor for exploring vulnerability, visibility, and longing in a world that can feel isolating.
Dominique Zeltzman '14 nominated for 2019 Baker Artist Award

"As a performer and visual artist, Dominique Zeltzman's interest in mapping everyday moments through video and installation evolved from mapping everyday movements through choreography and video. She researches the container as a social construct and a harbor for memory, objectification, and power. A dancer and performance artist in San Francisco from 1991-2006, Zeltzman's work has been presented in the U.S. and the Czech Republic. Her narrative video, Girl Under the Table premiered in San Francisco's Gay and Lesbian Film Festival and traveled to Hollywood, New York, Paris, Chicago, Bologna, Houston, Spokane, and Toronto. In 2014, she received her MFA in Intermedia and Digital Art from UMBC, and was chosen as one of six MFA graduates from Baltimore to exhibit in the Young Blood show at MAP. In 2015 she was awarded a b-grant Baker Artist Award, and in 2016 she was a recipient of a Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award. During academic year 2015-2016 Zeltzman was the Visiting Scholar in Art at Phillips Academy Andover and now teaches at UMBC. She recently spent 10 months taking care of her mother full time and, in the process, created a living artwork in the presence of dementia. She collaborates with Los Angeles based artist, Paula Cronan. Her house is her studio."
RTKL 2019-2020 Awarded to Jason Charney '20

Project: “Equivocation: Noisy Drawings”

My work explores how our psyches shape and are shaped by the tools we use, both consciously and subconsciously. How do we adjust our interpersonal relationships, our modes of perception, and even our bodies in order to communicate with and through the digital medium? How can the errors and failures of technologies expose the limits of its abilities – and our trust in its rendering of our intentions?

In my process, I investigate the human interface with technology, and especially the unreliable translations between the natural and artificial, the physical and digital, and the embodied and electronic. These themes manifest in multimedia installations and performances, often employing custom software and digital/physical hybrids to create sound, animation, and light in real-time generative systems.

Parastoo Aslanbeik receives 2018 MFA Award

Chosen by juror Cara Ober, Parastoo Aslanbeik wins the MFA Award for her mixed media installation and written thesis “Wispobish: Forest of Ghosts, Tower of Voices.”

“I believe the most precious thing about winning an award is that it makes you more determined in your life and toward your goal. This has happened to me.”

Wispobish is a powerful tree in Persian mythology. The word “Wispobish” in Persian refers to “the cure of every disease.” Simurgh, a mythical phoenix-like bird representing benevolence, is believed to nest in the Wispobish tree. In this artwork I employ the symbol of the Wispobish in response to the recent Executive Order # 13769 “Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry'”that attempts to ban Iranians and other Muslims from the United States. I utilize the old photographic technique of wet-plate collodion, in combination with tree branches, to create a ghostly forest. A fragile yet monumental structure constructed from white-washed cardboard boxes is inscribed with ancient Persian poems and silhouettes of branches. Amplified from inside the tower of boxes is a soundtrack of quiet songs and mumblings in various languages. Through my artwork I hope to evoke the voices of those who have been demonized and to offer healing through collective strength.
