UMBC’s Joe Sherburne is named Academic All-American of the Year

UMBC men’s basketball team captain Joe Sherburne ‘18, financial economics, has nabbed top national honors as the 2018-19 Google Cloud Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for Division I men’s basketball.

Sherburne earned his bachelor’s degree in three years, with a 4.0 GPA, and is now pursuing his master’s degree in data science. Throughout his UMBC career, he has continually played at a high level. He is ranked seventh in all-time scoring and fourth in minutes played per game for UMBC. This remarkable record and consistency on and off the court led the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) to choose Sherburne for this high achievement.

“A lot of credit goes to my parents and the schools I grew up in, really attentive, good schools that I went to. You would not have expected a couple of years ago that a player from UMBC could get this award. If we didn’t have the success we’ve been having, this might not have happened, so there’s a big team aspect to this individual award,” says Sherburne.

<img src="/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/DSC_0934-768x511.jpg" alt="Joe Sherburne and the Retrievers take on UMass Lowell in early February.
In addition to his All-American of the Year accolade, Sherburne was also named to the America East All-Academic Team for the third time in his career and to the America East First Team for the first time. The Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin native is only the fourth Retriever to earn a spot on on the America East all-league team in the past 16 seasons.

“With the passion he brings on the court and the dedication he brings to the classroom, Joe truly serves as a role model for our university,” says President Freeman Hrabowski. “We’re so proud of how he represents UMBC and the leadership he’s brought to the team.”

America East also recognized the substantial contributions of two new additions to the Retriever team. Junior guard K.J. Jackson, sociology, was named to the America East Second Team and All-Defensive Team, while R.J. Eytle-Rock ‘22, psychology, was selected for the America East All-Rookie team.

“It’s an amazing accomplishment. Those out there that have been through all levels of education understand how hard it is,” says Coach Ryan Odom. “You add to it that he is a Division I athlete and his time is taken up with all kinds of weight training and practices, etc., to be that consistent is really impressive. It’s great recognition for Joe, we’re really proud of him.”

Legacy of excellence

These academic and athletic honors are nothing new for the teams of Retriever Nation. Closing the fall semester, scholar-athletes produced a department record GPA of 3.14, with ten teams achieving a 3.0 GPA or higher. Women’s volleyball and men’s lacrosse closed their 2018 seasons with 3.52 and 3.38 average GPAs respectively. More than 40 UMBC scholar-athletes achieved a perfect 4.0 average.

Looking ahead

This past weekend, a record high of nearly 3,000 spectators cheered on UMBC men’s basketball as the team defeated UAlbany in the America East quarter-final match-up. The Retrievers came into the contest seeded third to UAlbany’s No. 6. Arkel Lamar ‘20, sociology, Jackson, and freshman guard José Placer, all posted up double digits to contribute 32 out of UMBC’s 62 total points.

After this weekend’s contests, the bracket has been re-seeded and new matches have been set. Binghamton upset Stony Brook on Saturday, marking only the third time in America East history a No. 7 seed defeated a No. 2 seed in quarterfinals.

UMBC Retriever Essentials CCMA AmeriCorps Position OPEN!!!!!

<Tagline>Passionate about service and Food Justice? Apply today!</Tagline>

UMBC Retriever Essentials Team is looking for a new CCMA AmeriCorps VISTA for 2019-2020!

Retriever Essentials is a faculty, staff, and student partnership
tackling food insecurity in the UMBC community. The program offers three
ways for students to receive access to healthy foods and other
essential supplies, free of charge: Food Zones, Save a Swipe, and
Community Partnerships. Food Zones are six designated locations on
campus where students can anonymously pick up a pre-packed bag of
non-perishable groceries and toiletries. The intake process is
anonymous, but a short demographic based intake survey is required--no
financial evidence of need is required. Additionally, there are 3
locations on campus with donation bins--Retriever Essentials is a fully
donation-supported food pantry-- where the campus community routinely
provides non-perishable groceries for programming. The Save a Swipe
program provides free meals to the campus dining hall. Students with
meal plans can sign up to donate either 5 or 10 meals to the Save a
Swipe “pool.” These meals then become available for use by students who
are identified as food insecure by trained Retriever Essentials team
members and campus staff, so they can eat on campus for free. Community
partnerships act as the final pillar to Retriever Essentials. Retriever
Essentials is aware that food insecurity is often the tip of the iceberg
in a student’s financial struggle and can be the first of many barriers
to academic success. To provide support for “higher needs services,”
the UMBC Clinical Social Worker will refer students who are utilizing
Retriever Essentials to other campus and/or community resources. All
three aspects of Retriever Essentials programming provide a pathway to
academic success for the most at-risk UMBC students.
Member Duties :
The second year CCMA AmeriCorps VISTA will implement the current
working operation manual to continue streamlining all Retriever
Essentials programming, while updating it to ensure needs are met in the
most efficient way possible. They will oversee volunteer recruitment
and coordination for daily operations of the food pantry, which include:
donation collection, inventory, bag packing, and bag delivery. The CCMA
AmeriCorps VISTA will also be tasked with developing a fundraising plan
in order to raise money to support Retriever Essentials’ proposal for a
permanent pantry space on campus. They will also work to develop
collaborative partnerships with departments and student groups, as well
as the Retrievers Action Committee, on and off campus to provide
programming and events around food justice, healthy eating on a budget,
and much more. Additionally, the CCMA AmeriCorps VISTA will create and
implement a student-board to help institutionalize Retriever Essentials.

A learning moment about International Women's Day

<Tagline>Thank you for calling in this past Friday</Tagline>

Dear UMBC Community,

On Friday, March 8, 2019, I created a post regarding International Women's Day, except I used the word "Womyn's." Thanks to a learning moment, initiated by you- UMBC community members who read our Mosaic posts- I now know about the problematic and exclusive history behind this word for trans women. I unknowingly excluded trans women from our International Women's Day celebratory post. Nevertheless, I apologize to all whom I harmed by ignorantly using the word, "womyn."

For all who are unaware of this word's history, this is a brief overview: On July 1975, the Lesbian Connection magazine covered the Wolf Creek Womyn's Festival, run by the Women's Liberation Front. They are typically white, cis-gender, radical feminists who only welcome "females who survived girlhood." This implies that trans women are excluded from their movement, hence the exclusionary meaning in "womyn." To learn more, I encourage you to read the following posts by everydayfeminism and the Boston Globe that explain the complicated history and more recent iterations of related terms.

In any case, it is important in diversity and inclusion work to call-in folk when we intentionally or unintentionally cause harm through insensitive language or actions. In this case, I appreciate all who reached out to us to do so. I personally want to thank you for making the brave decision to call-in and for reading. If you have any further questions regarding this post or any of our LGBTQ+ resources and programming, please email us at mosaic@umbc.edu.

Sincerely,

Global Health Research Award for affordable infant incubator

<Tagline>UMBC class project to clinical trials</Tagline>

March 8, 2019 by Megan Hanks

When Kevin Tran ‘12,
chemical engineering, was a student at UMBC, he took a course on
sensors that made him realize the best high tech solution is sometimes a
     low tech solution.

Govind Rao, professor of
chemical, biochemical, and environmental engineering, and director of
the Center for Advanced Sensor Technology (CAST) asked Tran and his
classmates to explore a problem that could be solved by sensors, but to
not lose sight of factors beyond the technology. The team began work on a
low-cost infant incubator. After years of refinement in the lab, the
invention has now earned the 2019 Global Health Research Award from the
Academic Pediatric Association. Rao and co-authors will be recognized at
the Pediatric Academic Societies Meeting in Baltimore, April 27–30.

Rao and his students sought to
develop an incubator to support premature babies in communities with
limited resources, and in remote areas that do not have access to
medical facilities. The incubators they developed are made from
cardboard, and can be easily disposed of after each use. The materials
used to construct them are fairly easy to find, making them inexpensive
and accessible to people in low- and middle-income countries.

    Govind

collaborators have developed to Maryland Secretary of Commerce Mike
Gill. Photo by Marlayna Demond ’11 for UMBC.

Seeing the challenge firsthand

Tran recalls that, from the very
beginning, the project stretched his mind and allowed him to think of
creative solutions to a significant real-world challenge. “The scope of
the project was much broader than just the sensor itself,” and Rao
emphasized the need to look at social and economic factors, recalls
Tran. “Rather than just trying to make an efficient and low-cost sensor,
our design would also be heavily influenced by which target population
    we were trying to reach.”

After completing the course, Tran
joined CAST for the summer to continue working on the project alongside
the professor. Tran and several other student researchers joined Rao on a
trip to India to see, firsthand, how local medical facilities used
    incubators for premature infants.

Govind Rao, third from left, with UMBC students and research partners, during a trip to India. Photo courtesy of Kevin Tran.

The facilities they visited had some
access to incubators, but the situation was far from ideal. “We learned
that incubators that broke were not able to be serviced at hospitals or
primary health care facilities,” explains Tran. “Since many [incubators]
were donated…no one know how to go about repairing them.”

Eventually, the collaboration
included funding from the Food and Drug Administration to support
collaborations with the Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education
and Research and Phoenix Medical Systems to conduct clinical trials,
which resulted in the award winning work.

Some incubator development team members during a trip to India. Photo courtesy of Kevin Tran.

Thinking outside the box

The research project has evolved over
time to better account for the particular needs of communities that
would use this incubator technology. Heating systems are common for
incubators in air conditioned facilities, and a heating system for the
incubator is currently in a clinical trial in India. But what about
incubators used in warm environments without air conditioning?

In these contexts, a cooling system
can be just as important to help infants maintain a steady body
temperature. Plus, both the heating and cooling systems must be highly
    reliable and cost-effective.

Elizabeth Tan ‘19, chemical
engineering, has worked in CAST for about two years, and is conducting
research to develop a cooling system. She is collaborating with Deepika
Sagar to develop the system, and she says that working a student in
another major has allowed her to learn new skills, from computer-aided
    design to soldering.

“It’s great to put what you learned into play,” Tan says. She adds, “It’s nothing like what I expected.”

Tan has enjoyed learning about the
broader process of how a product is designed, tested, and launched, and
all of the factors that go into making it successful. It’s also opened
her eyes to the opportunities she has to make an impact on how medical
care is delivered in communities with limited resources. “You realize
the need” for these kinds of solutions, says Tan. That’s affected how
she understands the project and how she envisions her career.

In the future, the team envisions the
device being modified at a local level to fit the needs of people in
different areas. After all, says Tran, providing care for premature
babies is a problem faced by all communities, “not just one country or
    certain population.”

“The dream is to be able to shift
paradigms” throughout the world, he explains, so all communities can
    access this life-saving technology.
