Too Busy Being Black

Author’s note: This blog is a reflection of my constantly evolving thought process on how intersectionality unveils itself in my life, specifically in regards to my racial and gender identities. Hearing Daily Host Correspondent, Dulcé Sloan’s, insights helped me more clearly articulate my thoughts.

I recently came across a Huffington Post interview where Daily Host Correspondent, Dulcé Sloan, stated, “I Don’t Have Time To Be A Woman, I’m Too Busy Being Black.” Her words resonated with me because she so boldly and clearly laid out a sentiment that I had been trying to articulate for years. I first began to wrestle with this idea– that I was too busy dealing with the social implications of my Blackness to fully address the oppression I face as a woman–when I came across the term intersectionality in high school.

Coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw, intersectionality describes the overlap of our oppressed identities that result in multiple levels of social injustice. I understand that my race and gender operate together, one having an effect on the other, but for some reason, I have felt a greater need to defend my worth as a Black person before I get a chance to defend my worth as a woman. I so vividly remember the various racial microaggressions and slurs I have had to endure throughout the years, but many of my memories surrounding sexism are limited to holding my own against boys during middle school recess basketball games and correcting the occasional uniformed “period jokes.” This is partly due to the fact that I grew up in predominantly White suburbs where my gender stood out less than my Blackness.

In my classes, there were plenty of other girls, but I was normally one of the few, if not only, Black students. This left me constantly feeling the need to prove that I was just as smart and articulate as everyone else, while also asserting the fact that intelligence runs deep in the Black community to avoid tokenism. I also had to defend my Blackness to members of the Black community to avoid being labeled White. Growing up, there were various internal and external battles that I fought in terms of validating my racial identity, that I did not as intensely experience when forming my gender identity. This is not to say that I don’t value my womanhood and understand that there are numerous systems working against me because of it. I just believe that I am often unfairly held back from fully reaping the rewards of feminist victories due to my Blackness.

My experiences have led me to believe that my race is the aspect of my identity that brings me the most joy as well as the most hardship, but I seldom give as much weight to how my gender factors into this strange mixture of pride and oppression.

In a context greater than the neighborhood that I grew up in, I think that this thought process stemmed from my feelings of division and exclusion within the Feminist Movement. In her essay “Age, Race, Class and Sex: Women Redefining Difference,” Audre Lorde presents the idea that, “There is a pretense to a homogeneity of experience covered by the word sisterhood that does not in fact exist.” In conversations about the goals of the feminist movement, I have had to assert the fact that Women of Color are impacted by sexism differently than White woman.

Yes, I can relate to daily instances of sexism, but because I am Black, these instances become intensified. For example, if I am passionate about a topic or asserting myself, I am not only acting on emotional impulses associated with femininity, but I am somehow now the “angry Black girl.” Additionally, Black women are often left out of major dialogues relating to gender equality. In fact, there are many instances where our contributions to the Feminist Movement have been left unacknowledged. Our experiences simply are not the same, and until that is understood, the Feminist Movement will continue to exclude a wide array of women who would be a great asset to the furthering of the cause. Not feeling validated in a group that is supposed to be fighting for your equality is discouraging.

In comparison, I have found a sense of understanding and unity within the Black Lives Matter Movement that makes me believe that my experiences are validated in the fight for justice. Black Lives Matter was founded by three Black women, Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi, with the intent of “placing those at the margins closer to the center.” They realized that most Black liberation movements are led by Black, cis-gender, heterosexual men and wanted to make space for the experiences of Black women and Black queer and trans people. A movement with Black women at the core is something that is reaffirming to me.

With that being said, no movement is perfect, and I should look at how other movements approach the issue of diversity. Based on my experiences with the Feminist Movement, I can imagine that there are many movements where people feel stifled or unheard.

The disconnect between wanting to be more involved in the Feminist Movement and not feeling entirely welcomed is something that I struggle with but am actively trying to reconcile. I am a co-facilitator of Women of Color Coalition, a bi-weekly discussion group at the Women’s Center, where I am able to have open dialogues with other Women of Color about our diverse experiences and how we fit into the fight for gender equality. I find that this group has allowed me to connect with people who have similar sentiments as myself. It is spaces like this where I feel that my voice is not only heard but valued. I have come to realize that although my gender is not always at the forefront of my personal understanding of how I am perceived socially, it is a part of my identity that is essential to understanding the impact systemic structures of oppression have on me as a whole.

Help Wanted!! - Testers for RT in the Cloud

For several months DoIT staff have been working diligently on a project to transition RT to a hosted environment (Cloud) in Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The goal is to address volume related performance issues currently being experienced and provide a more robust business continuity option. This transition will include a minor upgrade to the application (4.4.2 to 4.4.3) and testing will begin 12/10/2018 with the actual upgrade occurring 1/5/2019.

We are asking all support staff to log in and perform testing on typical tasks to ensure a smooth and successful transition.

Please note that the test system will not actually send emails to ticket participants however it will record them as if they were sent for verification purposes. You can add new tickets via the ‘New Ticket in’ button on the top right of the screen. Note, web forms will not create tickets in the test instance. This feature will be verified via the RT technical team.

The major items to test will be adjustments to existing tickets (e.g. add a correspondence, change a custom field value, resolve a ticket, change ownership, etc.).

Please note that the test system will have the BestPractical default look and feel of blue/white instead of our UMBC colors.

Please submit a ticket for any issues identified in your testing.

For those interested we are on version 4.4.2. You can review the release notes for RT 4.4.3 here.

Thank you

Joe Kirby

Hotspots and Public Wi-Fi

Public Wi Fi is famous with its easily availability and free
access. Any person with their computer or other devices can access Public Wi
-Fi. Public Wi -Fi could be found in convenient places such as universities,
libraries, airports, coffee shops and hotels. In the case when you connect to Public
Wi -Fi there is a threat that someone might access the data you are sending to
    your colleague or boss.

To protect your data while we are using Public Wi-Fi, send
your information to only to sites that are trusted and fully encrypted, and
avoid using mobile apps that require personal and financial information.

Regardless what we are doing connecting to Public Wi -Fi
considered incredibly dangerous. There are some suggestions while you are
connected to Public Wi – Fi.

Do not touch any of your personally identifiable information (PII)

Use virtual private networks (VPN) instead

Turn of sharing

Here are some useful tips from internet security experts:

·
    Be aware
Public Wi-Fi is inherently insecure — so be cautious.

·
    Remember —
any device could be at risk
Laptops, smartphones and
tablets are all susceptible to the wireless security risks.

·
    Treat all
    Wi-Fi links with suspicion
Don’t just assume that the Wi-Fi link is legitimate. It could
be a bogus link that has been set
up by a cybercriminal that’s trying to capture valuable,
personal information from unsuspecting users. Question everything — and
don’t connect to an unknown or unrecognised wireless access
    point.

·
    Try
to verify it’s a legitimate wireless connection
Some bogus links — that have been set up by malicious
users — will have a connection name that’s deliberately similar
to the coffee shop, hotel or venue that’s offering free Wi-Fi.
If you can speak with an employee at the location that’s providing
the public Wi-Fi connection, ask for information about their legitimate Wi-Fi
access point — such as the connection’s name and IP
    address.

·
    Use a VPN
    (virtual private network)
By using a VPN when you connect to a public Wi-Fi network,
you’ll effectively be using a ‘private tunnel’ that encrypts all
of your data that passes through the network. This can help
to prevent cybercriminals — that are lurking on the
network — from intercepting your data.

·
    Avoid using
    specific types of website
It’s a good idea to avoid logging into websites where there’s
a chance that cybercriminals could capture your identity, passwords
or personal information — such as social networking sites,
online banking services or any websites that store your credit card
    information.

·
    Consider using
    your mobile phone
If you need to access any websites that store or require the
input of any sensitive information — including social
    networking, online shopping and
online banking sites — it may be worthwhile accessing them via
your mobile phone network, instead of the public Wi-Fi connection.

·
    Protect your
    device against cyberattacks
Make sure all of your devices are protected by a rigorous anti-malware and security solution — and ensure
that it’s updated as regularly as possible.

Graduate Assistantship Forms Transitioning to DocuSign!

<Tagline>Digital Workflow Offers Expanded Functionality</Tagline>

The Graduate School has been using DocuSign as their e-signature and digital workflow platform, replacing many of their paper forms with electronic forms that can be submitted, signed, processed and stored with no printing required. The ease with which both students and staff can submit and sign the forms and the efficiency they generate in the workplace has encouraged the Graduate School to partner with the Division of Information Technology (DoIT) to transition graduate assistantship forms to the DocuSign platform.

However, creating a form that all departments could use while simultaneously fulfilling the individual needs and preferences of each was not an easy task. The form had to be smart enough to adapt to many different scenarios and reliable enough to remain consistent and efficient for signers.

With the help of DoIT’s assistant vice president Joe Kirby, software developer Frank Elmore, their team of student developers, and input from graduate assistants and campus stakeholders, the Graduate School created a dynamic data gathering form for assistantships. This webform allows departmental staff to quickly enter information, automatically retrieve key information from the school database, and easily identify the name and email of each required signer in the workflow. As the DocuSign form travels to each individual via secure email, administrators can track the document through recorded timestamps and easily see each time someone opens, edits, or signs it.

According to the Assistant Dean for Administration, Policy and Compliance Isabel Garrido, the ability to track the form as it progresses in the DocuSign workflow is efficient and eliminates guesswork. As an example, when graduate assistants contact the Graduate School about the status of their tuition remission, instead of referring them to their department, searching for paper forms or wondering if they have been signed, DocuSign allows Isabel and her staff to view the most recent timestamp on a form and know exactly where it is in the process in seconds.

DocuSign’s technical accessibility is also beneficial. Within moments of the form being sent graduate assistants can access, sign and submit them on their mobile device from any location. Upon receipt of the form, graduate assistants will be glad to see that not only has much of the required information been pre-populated, but the few fields they are required to complete are intuitive and come with helpful tips to guide them smoothly and quickly through the process.

Although mistakes are less likely when entering DocuSign forms, if errors occur, the process to generate a corrected form in DocuSign is quick and easy. The helpful notifications feature in DocuSign automatically sends email reminders to signers ensuring speedy compliance and provides an electronic copy of each finalized form to the Graduate School. DoIT’s recent upgrade of the forms has gone even further to make the process more flexible to the needs of graduate assistants and departments alike.

Lina Chung, Program Management Specialist in the College of Engineering and Information Technology (CoEIT) transitioned to the DocuSign process for graduate assistant forms in 2017 and praises how efficiently her office processes GA Tuition Remission and GA Appointment Letters now. “Before, timelines could be very unpredictable. Forms could take anywhere from days to weeks to fully complete. Now, it rarely takes more than a few days,” Lina explains. With most graduate students living busy lives off campus, some in other countries, a faster process that limits the need for back-and-forth communication is essential.

Information Systems adopted the DocuSign process for graduate assistantships in 2017. Chemical, Biochemical & Environmental Engineering (CBEE) implemented the process in Dec. 2018. Computer Science and Electrical Engineering (CSEE), Mathematics and Statistics, and Physics and are expected to implement shortly. A pilot group comprised of members from various departments who have not transitioned to the DocuSign process is currently testing the forms. Departments interested in joining the pilot group should contact Isabel Garrido (garrido@umbc.edu) in the Graduate School.

Campus-wide implementation of graduate assistantship forms via DocuSign is slated for summer ‘19.
