Meet Ann Tropea, the assistant director for engaged media with the Center for Democracy and Civic Life, and the full-time staff advisor for the Student Media Collective, which includes The Retriever, Bartleby, and WMBC. Ann’s academic background is in mass media communications studies and law. In her spare time, she (separately) hosts a podcast and acts as a doula, helping support families during birth.

Q: Briefly introduce yourself. What’s one essential thing you’d want another Retriever to know about you?

A: I am the assistant director for engaged media with the Center for Democracy and Civic Life and the full time staff advisor for the Student Media Collective (SMC)—the newly chartered student organization for student-run media on campus. I bring many years of professional editorial, communications, and legal expertise to my position. I am a career editor, published author, and podcast producer/co-host.

I am also a licensed attorney in Louisiana and the District of Columbia, and I have represented a variety of individual and multinational clients in both federal and state court litigation. I hold a law degree from Loyola University Chicago School of Law and graduated magna cum laude in mass media communication studies from New York University. I am also a certified doula and enjoy supporting families in their birth and reproductive journeys.

Q: Tell us about someone in the UMBC community who has inspired you or supported you, and how they did it.

A: I joined the UMBC community as a staff member in October 2023 with zero experience working in higher education. There are so many folks who have supported and inspired me from day one, but special thanks are due to Isabel Taylor (former Retriever editor-in-chief), David Hoffman (director, Center for Democracy and Civic Life), and Renique Kersh (VP for Division of Student Affairs) who all saw my potential during the interview process and allowed me to join this incredible campus community.

Q: What’s the one thing you’d want someone who hasn’t joined the UMBC community to know about the support you find here?

A: No matter who you are, or where you’re coming from, you belong at UMBC.

Q: What part of your job do you enjoy the most and why?

A: I absolutely love working with the students in all three media groups that form the SMC (The Retriever, WMBC, and Bartleby) that I advise as the primary focus of my work. They are smart, fearless, and creative—I am incredibly lucky to have such amazing student colleagues to work side-by-side with every day.

Q: What brought you to UMBC in the first place?

A: I care deeply about making the world a more just and equitable place, where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. I came to UMBC because this is a place where it was clear from day one that I share those values with each and every person on this campus.

Q: Since you’ve been a part of the UMBC community, how have you found support of your WHY?

A: I grew up in Southern California and feel like that gives me some leeway to lean a bit into the woo-woo…. UMBC is a magical place where community and collaboration are radical acts of love. It’s not just “a” why. It’s the only why.

Q: Are you involved in any campus organizations? Tell us about what you love about them!

A: I’m a new member of the Exempt Staff Senate and am thrilled to serve on the executive board as the incoming communications manager with such a dedicated (and fun!) group of folks from across the university who are dedicated to doing good work.

UMBC’s greatest strength is its people. When people meet Retrievers and hear about the passion they bring, the relationships they create, the ways they support each other, and the commitment they have to inclusive excellence, they truly get a sense of our community. We invite you to submit a proposal to be nominated for the 2026 Andrew Carnegie Fellows Program competition, sponsored by Carnegie Corporation of New York. Details are below.

• The purpose of the Andrew Carnegie Fellows Program is to support high-caliber scholarship in the social sciences and humanities. The 2026 program expects to provide fellowships of $200,000 to 30 exceptional scholars, journalists, and public intellectuals. The funding is for a period of either one or two years, with the anticipated result being a book or major study.

• The 2026 call for applications is on the theme of political polarization in the United States. The Corporation anticipates that the work of the Andrew Carnegie Fellows Program will explore the many ways political polarization in the United States manifests itself in society and suggest ways that it may be mitigated. Studies of polarization in other countries will be welcomed providing they offer lessons that can be applied to the United States. Projects based in disciplines across the humanities and social sciences are welcomed.

• UMBC may nominate two scholars for the competition: one tenured and one senior untenured (i.e. teaching professors and professors of the practice). Candidates must have a Ph.D. or hold a terminal degree in their field. Untenured candidates will need to become PI Eligible through the exception process, which requires a letter from the Dean or ADR explaining that the faculty has undertaken significant research during their appointment at UMBC.

• Andrew Carnegie Fellowships are open only to citizens or permanent residents of the United States.

• Previous UMBC nominees who applied for the theme of political polarization are not eligible to apply again.

Please keep in mind that Carnegie seeks projects that will be written to communicate with a broad audience. You may find it useful to browse the projects that were awarded last year and read through a study of their focus and potential impact since the theme (political polarization in the U.S.) is unchanged.

The Carnegie jury will evaluate nominations by the following criteria:

• Originality and promise of the idea
• Quality of the proposal
• Promise to offer means to reduce harmful polarization or to enhance social cohesion
• Record of the nominee
• Plans to communicate findings to a broad audience

Your application materials must include:

1)  A 3-5 page, double-spaced prospectus describing the project, including a projected work plan and approximate time frame. Fellowships will be for either 12 or 24 months and must begin on the first of the month between July and September of 2026, and no later than September 1, 2026.

Note: The Carnegie program allows flexibility in how you manage your time commitment. You may opt for a regular fellowship leave or decide to teach part-time during the semester while working full-time on your project during the summer.

3) Estimate of budgetary requirement for a one- or two-year project. Funds may support:

• Salary and fringe benefits
• Project-related travel (research, conferences)
• Research assistants (hourly or stipend)
• Other project needs (i.e., data collection, surveys, transcription, project supplies and a consultant or contractual service)

The Dean's Office will convene a panel to review the applications and select one or two scholars to recommend to the President as UMBC's nominee(s) by October 22nd. The nominee(s) will work with CARAT to complete the application process and to forward all materials to the President's Office by October 30th. A letter of nomination from President Sheares Ashby is required for the application. Applications must be submitted to the Carnegie Corporation of New York by November 07, 2025 (5:00 P.M. EST).
