Dear UMBC Community,
One great part of the job of the UMBC president is to invite public officials, including our elected representatives at the local, state, and national levels, to visit UMBC and see firsthand the difference this public institution makes. I had the pleasure recently of hosting Representative Kweisi Mfume, whose congressional district includes UMBC.
After a quick tour of campus, Rep. Mfume met with students from across the state, including several from Baltimore who came to UMBC in large part thanks to our Best of Baltimore Grant.
Rep. Mfume told me how wonderful it was to hear from students directly that UMBC was a welcoming community, and that it was a place that would create opportunities and support their success. While he has known UMBC for a long time, I can tell you he left an even bigger fan than he was already, energized and inspired to return to Washington and continue advocating for Marylanders and for UMBC.

The 2025ABCEI Idea & Innovation Challenge!
Alex. Brown Center For Entrepreneurship and Innovation will be hosting a COMPETITION called the Idea and Innovation Challenge! This year, the competition will feature 3 tracks: The Technology & Innovation Track, the Social Impact Track, and the Spark Track. The Spark Track will be an opportunity for students who don’t have their own idea to work on a solution to a problem that will be announced in advance. This year's challenge is Reimagining Social Media for Good. For more details go to our website!

Dr. Mariann Hawken, for a talk on
Google Gemini on Wednesday, October 1, from 12-1pm EDT, to discover how it can enhance your work and support your role in UMBC's evolving digital learning ecosystem.
Gemini is the generative AI chatbot that runs Google's family of multimodal AI models. It offers powerful capabilities for academic research, teaching, and learning. This session introduces Gemini's core features, including the
Deep Research tool for generating source-based summaries and citations, and the
Canvas tool for organizing ideas and collaborating visually. Google is currently offering students access to the Gemini 2.5 Pro plan free for one year, but you must
register for the program by October 6, 2025.
The session will highlight how Gemini can support research discovery, instructional planning, and AI-enhanced learning activities. Participants will explore prompt strategies for academic use, learn about practical applications in the classroom or library, and consider ethical considerations when using AI in educational settings. Whether you're developing a research guide, planning a course, or helping students explore topics more deeply, Google Gemini offers a flexible and accessible entry point into generative AI.
