Emergency communication over cellular networks (4G, 5G, and beyond) is a vital part of our nation’s emergency response and disaster preparedness system. Its security, however, is still far from satisfactory due to cellular-specific technical challenges and the diversified requirements from standards organizations and administrative authorities.

She will share our research insights and findings on (1) identifying design defects in cellular emergency services standards, and (2) investigating the security of operational emergency services in the U.S., as well as the technical challenges we encountered and how to address them. Her results show that operational cellular emergency services can be abused in deniable ways. She will also discuss emerging challenges and opportunities for safeguarding next-generation emergency services.

The article quotes Professor Joshi's comments on teaching programming: 'Previous generations adapted to the calculator, the printing press and to the written word. We're slowly beginning to adapt and ask ourselves the question, how do you teach computer science, in a world where people can just tell the computer to spit out code?'"

It also mentions Schumacher's approach for using AI as a tool for brainstorming, rather than extracting facts, asa key to promoting responsible use. "Students who rely too much on the technology are vulnerable to endemic errors in AI answers called hallucinations that range from relatively innocuous mistakes to completely made-up facts. Google’s AI search tool once infamously identified former President Barack Obama as a Muslim, leading the tech giant to remove AI answers for some questions."

Department of Physics Welcomes Dr. Daniel Suárez-Forero

Daniel Suárez-Forero is joining the Physics Department as an Assistant Professor in the fields of experimental quantum physics and condensed matter. He will lead the “Group of Quantum Optics of Correlated Materials”, to perform experimental research in solid state systems in which the electronic interactions are much stronger than in conventional materials. He looks forward to finding and manipulating novel states of matter using opto-electronic techniques.

Daniel received his B.S. and M.S. from the National University of Colombia, and his Ph.D. from the Italian National Research Council (CNR). His focus during this period was the polariton physics; systems in which light and matter hybridize, giving rise to new quasiparticles. After his studies, he joined the Hafezi group at the Joint Quantum Institute (JQI), where he investigated many-body correlated phenomena in different solid-state systems. After this, he joined the Srivastava group at the University of Geneva. His team worked on the design of a system capable of optically and electronically manipulating the properties of a solid with nanometric resolution.

Daniel has contributed theoretical and experimental insights into the field of light-matter interaction in condensed matter systems. His works include the interface of polariton microcavities and quantum light, the study of the entanglement properties of light-matter hybrid states, the first realization of a Bose-Einstein condensate from a bound-in-the-continuum state, the development of a mechanism to induce chiral light-matter interaction by harnessing the quantum hall effect, and the demonstration of an excitonic Mott insulator in a Bose-Fermi mixture, among others. As a postdoctoral researcher at JQI, he also led the challenging task of setting up two laboratories for cryogenic optical spectroscopy.
