ASPIRE is created to provide aspiring leaders – individuals who are not currently supervising staff – with the essential professional competencies and interpersonal skills needed to effectively lead in the future. This cohort-based experience will be delivered through a mix of engaging in-person instruction and team coaching. 

ASPIRE is a unique opportunity open to all non-supervisory employees past their probationary period who are eager to take the first step on their leadership journey.

UMBC professor Aharona Rosenthal has a new paper, Can AI make Hitler cry?, exploring the use of AI in Holocaust education across four generations in Spinger’s AI and Ethics journal. The paper presents an empirical comparison of four generations of Holocaust descendants’ perceptions of AI-generated Holocaust content. 

It reveal a generational trust gap, showing that the first and second generations prioritize emotional authenticity and remain skeptical of AI, third- and fourth-generation participants show greater trust in digital platforms and AI-driven tools for Holocaust education. The fourth generation’s use of AI-powered tools, including short-form content on TikTok and Instagram Reels, represents a new mode of Holocaust engagement, but also raises ethical concerns for gamification and the trivialization of trauma. It advocates for a hybrid model that integrates AI with human storytelling and scholarly oversight to ensure responsible Holocaust education.

Faculty seeking external funding for research and creative achievement projects in the Humanities and Humanistic Social Sciences should contact Rachel Brubaker, CARAT Associate Director for Research Development. External grant and fellowship applications must be routed for university approval in either UMBC's Kuali system or through the CAHSS internal routing form before submission. CARAT (Creative Achievement and Research Administration Team) assists CAHSS faculty with research development and pre- and post-award services. CARAT offers a range of support activities for faculty seeking extramural funding, including drop-in sessions, individual consultations, workshops, and co-sponsored sessions. To request a consultation or to begin a proposal, visit our pre-award assistance webpage (you must be logged-in to myUMBC to complete CARAT request forms). The lead time for fellowship proposal development is 2-3 business weeks, and at minimum 4 business weeks for grant proposal development. CARAT reserves the right to decline proposal requests that do not include adequate lead time.

PI Eligibility: UMBC uses Kuali, a cloud-based research administration tool, for proposals and awards. UMBC faculty identified as a Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-Investigator on any proposal or award must first obtain PI eligibility in order to develop proposals and receive awards at UMBC. This includes faculty with appointments after August 1, 2012, as well as faculty who have not previously applied for external funding. The process involves completing the Principal Investigator Research Administration Training and Education (PIRATE) in Blackboard and a PI Eligibility request form via DocuSign. PI applicants must also obtain PeopleSoft Finance and PAW Access.

Faculty seeking external funding for research and creative achievement projects in the Humanities and Humanistic Social Sciences should contact Rachel Brubaker, CARAT Associate Director for Research Development. Consult with your department chair or program director before beginning any funding application. External grant and fellowship applications must be routed for university approval in either UMBC's Kuali system or through the CAHSS internal routing form before submission.
