A: The most memorable thing I have learned since coming to UMBC is that I am capable of way more than I ever thought possible. I never used to be a risk taker and I was always very shy and quiet. Now I am much more comfortable really putting myself out there and trying things I never even would have considered 3 years ago!

A: I have been selected for unique opportunity this summer where I will be embarking on a 4,000+ mile cross-country run from San Francisco, CA to Baltimore, MD. This trip is organized through the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adult’s 4K for Cancer program. As one of 180 total college students that will be a part of one of six separate trips; San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, San Diego, Baltimore, and New York, I have accepted the challenge to raise over $4500 before we are able to hit the road this summer. Our mission is to raise awareness, unite communities, and inspire hope towards the eradication of cancer. We will be visiting cancer patients at hospitals and cancer centers, as well as raising awareness about Ulman Cancer Fund’s mission in the towns we stop in during our trek across the country.

My dad has been battling Hodgkin's lymphoma for the past 10 years which is only one of the reasons why this trip is so meaningful to me. I am so passionate about this trip and everything it encompasses. I have recently begun talking to my teammates and I'm getting more excited everyday!

http://4kforcancer.org/profiles/corryn-wheatley/

In fact, I do this with many historical facts and events. I absorb important dates and somehow link them with the event so that they are mutually reinforcing: the number takes on the nature or "feel" of the event, and I also see the number whenever I think about that particular piece of history (e.g., April 18, 1906 and the San Francisco Earthquake are connected in my mind, because the date reminds me of the event, and vice versa). I'm not sure why or how.

One thing I do know is that I do not often have the opportunity to take advantage of this skill--particularly recalling the order of and information about the Presidents--unless I am participating in a trivia contest. When this skill does somehow enter conversation with others, many people are astonished. Viewing history this way is so second nature to me, however, that it often surprises me that people do not experience events or history in this manner.

It does make me curious, though, about all of the hidden abilities and talents we are carrying, which make us more fascinating to each other and add to the diversity present within our community.

So let's hear from all of your inner superheroes--what are your hidden talents?
UMBC Carpoolers Tell Their Stories

<Tagline>Casual Carpooling: Students share their experiences!</Tagline>

Last year was my first carpooling experience at UMBC. I
always wanted to be a part of it, but for some reason wasn’t finding people to
car pool with. It wasn’t until I thought I was going to have knee surgery for
my torn ACL that I looked a little deeper, put my availability down, and
thoroughly searched the site. Until then, it was easy for me to be lazy and
feel satisfied with skimpily searching the site; because, I knew I had other
options. But, the knee surgery dilemma made me get serious! And it didn’t require
much more effort. I’m glad I did.

I ended up connecting with Jasper, a photography student,
who like me, is also an older student, with a unique view point on life, which made
commuting a lot more fun. I was no longer traveling this grueling distance and
combating annoying traffic alone to attend class at the crack of dawn. I was
now commuting with a companion in the journey of completing school. And it felt
less lonely. And strangely, she lived right up the road from me, not even 400
meters away, and on the rout that I already took for school. So what the hell,
    why not?

We first corresponded via email, and eventually we phoned.
She wasn’t the first person who I connected with on the site but her location
and schedule fit best mine best. She offered to give me money but I ended up
declining, because she was on my way to school and It didn’t cost me any extra
to pick her up (and oh I ended up not having the knee surgery, so I was able to
    do the driving).

We started with a suggestive time of pickup, which usually
always ended up being a little later and I’d send her a txt message before
arriving. Sometimes she would need a ride other times she wouldn’t and she’d
either tell me in the morning or the night before. But sometimes she wouldn’t
respond at all; so in those cases I would just head off to school alone. Near
the end of the semester both of our schedules got a little more hectic so it
was harder to keep up with each other and the ridesharing because our schedules
weren’t exactly the same. I had classes earlier then she, and she ended with classes
later than I. So there was a little bit of compromising with both of us being
on campus longer than maybe we both desired but generally it worked out and it
    was a good time

I think with ride sharing it’s very important to be clear
with what both parties need and are capable of providing. Communication and
holding up your end of the agreement helps prevent conflicts and
misunderstandings. Be careful not to overextend yourself and agree only to what
you’re capable of doing. Label the rest as a possibility rather than a
confirmation; because, if you say you can do something then that other person
is counting on you. I’m sure you’d find it disappointing and frustrating if what
you were counting on fell through. So be
considerate of others by communicating clearly!

Best of wishes

Hope you find a friend
    to commute with

Super Bowl Sunday Update

Greetings everyone!

Velth (Cameron/President) here with a quick update for all those of you who missed the meeting last Friday:

1) If you would like to have more casual contact with the group, feel free to add me on Skype (velth.akabra) and I will put you into our Skype group. You do not need to actually make me a contact, but until you send me the invite I won't see your name to add you into the group.

2) Fur the More is a thing! If you're going, it would be a good idea to both get your passes and post a note to the discussion thread we have on the topic. It is more than likely that we can share resources to transport people to the con and so on, but we will need to know who is going in order to know how much help we can offer.

3) Saturday the 14th we are thinking of having a game night. This game night would begin around 6:00pm and run until around 9:00pm. Food will not be provided, so plan accordingly. We welcome anyone who has board games or card games to bring.

Please comment below if you will be able to attend, would like a different time, or would like to hold the event on Sunday. I can make some alterations, but since I want to reserve some space for us I need your feedback sooner rather than later.

4) We will be trying to get together that potluck dinner/movie night with some of the Maryland Furs at the end of next month. Exact dates, times, etc. will depend on when we can get a lecture hall. This even will occur on the weekend, and if it's successful in drawing interest will be repeated.

5) There is ANOTHER group meeting next Friday from 12:00 - 1:00. Official group meetings will be held once a month on the first Friday of the month. These meetings will be where official plans are discussed and finalized. This is the BEST time to give us your input if you'd care to do so. Feel free to send me a message letting me know you'll be a little early or late if you can't quite make the time.

This is not the only time the group will meet; soon we will have some room space reserved for the group to regularly hang out each day.

6) We had someone express a desire to talk with some of our group members about the fandom as part of a class paper demonstrating journalism. I will try to get their permission to post their contact info here so anyone interested can get involved. Just waiting for a reply email at the moment.

That should be all for now. I'll keep you posted as we work towards finalized dates and plans with regards to all the events listed here.

Velth out.
