Update on the Campus Entrance Project - January 2015

Work on the campus entrance project has transitioned to Administration Drive and the surrounding areas, creating several changes to vehicle, parking, and pedestrian patterns that will remain in effect throughout the remainder of the winter session, extending into spring 2015.

Administration Drive no longer acts as a thoroughfare. The drive only offers access to Admin Garage and the RAC drop-off circle.

Several bays on both levels of the Admin Garage, as well as the original upper level entrance have been closed during demolition.

ADA accessible Admin Garage parking has been relocated to the lower level, and an accessible route to campus has been provided. Additional ADA accessible parking can be found in Lots 8 and 9 and the Commons Garage. Please see our accessibility map for more information on accessible routes to locations across campus.

All parking spaces in the lower level of Admin Garage, including the parking lot expansion, are restricted to admin zone E gated card holders and handicap parking only.

In the event no spaces are available in the lower garage, overflow parking on the upper level is permitted to all admin zone E gated card holders, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Metered spaces on the upper level of Admin Garage are for visitor parking only.

The west end of Administration Drive is open to service vehicles and deliveries only.

Please view our construction map for more details about these changes.

Work on UMBC Blvd. and Hilltop Circle will continue throughout the spring. Construction on UMBC Blvd. has transitioned to the east (inbound) side, and a new traffic pattern has been developed to handle incoming and outgoing traffic. Use caution when entering or exiting campus from UMBC Blvd. and be mindful of construction personnel and pedestrians in the area.

Please expect delays and give yourself plenty of extra travel time to arrive on campus. We encourage the campus community to use alternate routes, such as Hilltop Rd., Walker Ave., or Shelbourne Rd. You can view these routes on our campus map.

As always, we encourage you to visit the Campus Entrance website and join our myUMBC group to receive news and updates and stay apprised of how construction on this project may impact you.

Thank you so much for your patience and understanding as we continue work on this important project. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us.

Announcing Critical Social Justice 2015 (2/16-2/20)

Departments, student groups, and individuals from across the UMBC campus and community have organized a week full of exciting programming for the 2nd annual Critical Social Justice campaign. This year’s theme is “Creating Brave Spaces,” inspired by the essay “From Safe Spaces to Brave Spaces” by Brian Arao and Kristi Clemens. Our keynote speaker will be comedian and social justice blogger Franchesca Ramsey (a.k.a. Chescaleigh), who’s perhaps best known for her viral parody video on racial microaggressions “Sh*t White Girls Say…To Black Girls.” Franchesca Ramsey’s keynote lecture “Your Powerful Online Voice: Social Media for Social Change” will be Tuesday, February …

“No one will lower your grade if you don’t submit to a conference.” UMBC Graduate Dean Janet Rutledge discusses the need for self efficacy and independence

On Tuesday, January 20, 2015, Dr. Janet Rutledge, Dean of the Graduate School at UMBC, addressed the participants of the Winter 2015 Dissertation House. Dr. Rutledge, a national leader in graduate education, discussed the “process” of obtaining the PhD. She stated that the papers that were being written in high school or during undergraduate studies were generally “discovery papers,” or introductions to research. Graduate students are expected to learn the process of doing research in the discipline: gather background information, find out what others have done, learn what has worked well in the past and what didn’t work, and make strides toward possible solutions.

Dean Rutledge also discussed the need to develop skills for becoming an independent scholar, and the need to engage in scholarly activities outside of the classroom and the laboratory. She acknowledged that it can be difficult to develop a sense of scholarly independence, and said, “No one will lower your grade if you don’t submit to a conference.” Following this statement, the dean encouraged the graduate students to participate in their professional societies and begin to develop expert knowledge by connecting with others in the field. She noted that these activities may not necessarily be driven by others, and that students need plans of action to be sure that they are actively engaged in external academic activities that will be of benefit to their knowledge base, scholarly network, and future careers.

Dr. Rutledge’s research covered a mathematical model for speech using low bit-rate coding. In addition to being Vice Provost for Graduate Education and Dean of the Graduate School, she is on the faculty in the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering.

Michele Wolff, Shriver Center, and Stephen Freeland, INDS, in The Catonsville Times

Michele Wolff, Shriver Center, and Stephen Freeland, interdisciplinary studies, were featured in an article about UMBC’s new Summer Enrichment Experience in The Catonsville Times. The Summer Enrichment Experience (SEE) is a commuter day program through the Shriver Center which offers academic courses for middle and high school students.

Wolff shared her goals for the program, saying, “The idea is to give the middle and high school students the opportunity to be on a college campus, but also the opportunity to have an interesting and exciting way to learn about the sciences or arts and humanities based content.”

Freeland, who will teach “Cosmos on Campus” at SEE, described the importance of exposing middle and high school students to a different way of learning science. “We teach them that science is about the steady accumulation of facts and that has no resemblance to what an actual scientist does,” he said. “That completely underestimates the creativity, the role of hypothesis testing- the whole point is investigating what we don’t know, not what we do know.” Instead, Freeland has designed his course to enable students to “ask important questions in a way that gives reliable answers.”

SEE will run from July 13- August 7. Registration is open and there is a discount available for UMBC faculty, staff and alumni. Visit see.umbc.edu to learn more.
